I have a shudder through the brake pedal under braking, so how hard is it to change the front brake disks on a GU?

Bit of a job mate. Maybe 2-3 hours. Locking Hubs need no be removed, then the calipers, then undo the hub nuts and the entire hub and disc will come off. Then you need to remove the disc from the hub. There is bolts on the outer side of the hub, remove them. Then the disc needs to come away from the hub. This can be tricky as the disc will be stuck pretty good. Plenty off wd40 or your choice of lubricant where the disc meets the hub. You may need something to help lever apart the disc and hub, but they will come apart.

I changed the front discs on my GU. If I could do it, anyone who can wield a spanner should be able to do it. Read up about it first (somewhere on this forum is a good pictorial post on dismantling the hubs) & then put an afternoon aside. Grooved & dimpled discs with good pads give a significant braking improvement over the standard items. You will need a special tool for the hub nuts (I made a peg spanner, but you can buy one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Axle-4x4-Hub-Lock-Nut-2-Pin-Socket-for-Patrol-Y61-Navara-D22-1-2-Spanner-Tool-/131364026257?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item1e95e7f791).) & some grease. Do one side at a time & take photos as you go. It’s not particularly hard, just takes a bit of time. I may have been lucky, but my old discs came off quite easily. The only complications I had was that I put the ‘directional discs on the wrong way round & had to take them off again. The ‘egg ring’ spacers were also missing from my hubs & so I had to strip the hubs again once I’d ordered & received them a couple of days later from Patrolapart. So over a couple of days I went from novice to experienced disc remover/replacer!

When i first got my 2010 patrol i noticed a serious shudder in the brakes as i slowed down and pulled off the road. I complained about this to the dealer when i took it back there next. 'Um i think that sounds like your ABS working' he said. He was right. Guess thats what happens when you jump from an early 90s model to late model vehicle - not used to these new bloody technologies 😧

Yup, that was the thread I was thinkng of. JME, you just need to pick out the bits of it you need. Replacing the discs is much less complex than needing to do the whole CV/Swivel hub thing.
Thanks Darren

Are you sure its not loose wheel bearings causing the shudder?
Was on mine, check by jacking offending wheel off the ground.
Then hold tyre at 12 and 6 and see if you feel any movement.
Remove a wheel and see what condition your pads are in

Pads are good, the problem is definitely with the disks. Is looking at getting them machined but cost was $160 :-o

Best price so far is $140

That's a lot when I can buy two new rotors for $120 for cheapies, $160 for two good quality rotors

You know what mate.... its a 4wd and everything is expensive.

If you can get a guy to machine at $140 put that up against doing a complete strip down with labour..

I have tried the cheap discs and will never again... they are cheap for a reason.

My guy here only charges $70 to come to my house and machine my discs on the car... brake pads have gone up and now cost over $100 for good quality set.

I cheap set of pads is only going to wear very quickly and cost you more in the not too far future.

Nope, it's really not expensive. My daily drive is a Subaru STI, now that is expensive to run!

I need to do something with the brakes, I am just trying to decide if it is worth paying $140 to do a brake machine when I can buy name brand brake rotors for $160 and spend a couple of hours fitting them.

It's a shame that the brake rotors don't slide on over the wheel studs like most other cars.

The pain in the walley of this combo will soon be forgotten & the improvement in braking will make you smile.

Yep, putting them just on the front of my Patrol leaf ute changed it from ‘hit the stop pedal & wait’ to ‘whoa I’ve got brakes that work”. Others here have reported the Bendix pads work well with them too, but having coughed up the extra for the 6000 series EBC Greenstuff pads I’ll be reluctant to try anything different when they need replacing.
