Recently bought a 1999 gu patrol wagon. Td42. 197000 k's
The tappets are a bit noisy on cold start up and when driving in the cab. Is that normal or do they need to be adjusted?
On start up blows a bit of smoke, seems to be more blue in colour then black.
When on the power as it comes over the 2000 rpm range I can see it blowing smoke too. Been told it's normal for the td's?
It's going to the mechanics soon just want a bit of a heads up
Cheers

Maybe due for a Dyno, do you have any gauges fitted.
IMO all TD diesel should have EGT and boost gauges fitted
It may just need a decent long run

It's just stock at the moment
Was going to put an exhaust on soon just wanted to get it running A1 first.
Plan is exhaust then gauges, dyno etc

I would do the other way around , reason being you can see what happens
with each mod you make eg. exhaust

I was just going to do exhaust first as it comes with the pyro bung in it. The factory ones don't have one do they?

no, they dont have the bung in there on the factory ones

but TD is correct, better to get the Dyno done first,
then you can see the improvements once you fit 3" exhaust, turbo, intercooler, methanol injection (just joking)
best to get a "base line" to start from
soooo
make sure all hoses, belts, filters (oil, air & fuel)are replaced first, then get it dyno'd

your rough start and blowing smoke is because the Glow Plugs are not working to top performance - maybe glow them twice before starting?????
see what difference that makes

as to when its under power, if its blowing black smoke (un-burnt fuel) your injector pump needs adjusting

Okay mate I'll look into getting that done first. Think I'll need another dyno tune after exhaust etc?
I'll try that in the morning. I'm going to give it a full service first :)
It's more of a bluey coloured smoke just hoping it's nothing major as in piston, rings etc

Two blokes who really know their 4.2TD's have told me that they all rattle especially when cold. Notice how long the oil light takes to go out- seems like for ever but usually 4, 5 or 6 seconds so there is no oil pressure up top for a couple of seconds hence the rattle. Tappet adjustment is very important.
Fuel and air filters also critical as they can be a cause of the black smoke if not up to scratch.

the oil light issue on start is usually due to the filter not having a non return in it so the oil drains, the oem ones dont do that and i think there are a couple of ohters as well that maybe someone con tell you, mine rattles on startup too but always has but in saying that it pays to check especially as its new to you.

Cheers for the advise guys!
It's going in for a service soon and will get the tappets adjusted as well!
It's more of a blue coloured smoke on startup and under load which worries me!

mine starts to smoke when its 1K over due for an oil change
once the oil change is done - no more smoke.........
