View Full Version : Tyre Comparo, What should i Buy for the GUIV

MudRunnerTD

Hi guys,

I am up for a set of tyres for the GUIV. really really soon. I am torn on what to buy to be honest. Feedback would be great.

Price is important.

Size will be 305/70 R16

Heard and read great things about the KM2s and leaning that way.

The tyres will be for Outback and High Country touring. The GUIV is no longer my daily commuter but Naomi drives it local every day. Looking for an aggressive AT or a Muddy.

I had my eye on the Micky T 4 Rib a few years ago but they have discontinued them.

I have seen a few posts on the Nitto Trail Grabbers which look like an evolution of the BFG KM1, worried about Noise?

The Maxxis Radial Treps look great but bloody expensive! I am not sure i want to go another set of directional tyres either??

This is a big investment and will be for the next 5 to 8 years on the car. I want to get it right.

Currently i have the Khumo KL71s and they have been reasonable. Directional and had to flip them on rims a couple of times which adds to the overall cost of the tyre and makes them as expensive as anything else on the market???

TORN???

Really looking for honest feedback. Yes i know the KM2s do it well.

I would never fit directional tyres again,
KM2s seem to get a good rap.
5-8 years how many Ks a year will the GU travel ?

MudRunnerTD
2nd July 2015, 09:22 AM
At the moment it will be down to 15 to 20k a year on a big year Unless i do some trips. I fitted the Khumos 5 years ago almost to the day.

I really wanted to put a set of Toyo AT2's on my Trol when I changed over to steel rims but Toyo ran a huge promo on them and I was waiting for ages so settled with Coopers ST-Maxx. Have always ran Toyos and love them! You will get 80k out of them without even breaking a sweat! My Dad is due for a new set for his Ranger and he is slapping them on, they look bloody good and are pretty good on the hip pocket too!

As for the Coopers they have been pretty good so far, done about 20k on them and they are wearing nicely, noise isnt bad, they dont seem to like long cornering though, can get a bit noisy. If you are after a true 50\50 tyre I would go with the Coopers.

I'm on my second set of km2 and won't be getting another, out of 8 Tyers 2 have had a warranty replacement due to de lamination inside tyre, and after 2 years are starting to get hard.

Im on my second set of km2s after getting 100k out of the first lot without a single issue.

Toyo, nitto, general and bfg would be the options I would be looking at for a daily . All good tyres with good reputation.

Another for KM2s.

Just a question, any reason wanting 33s for daily? would it not be better for the daily commute to have some HT or AT in a 31 for road then something more aggressive for off road and trips?

As you might of gathered im a fan of the play tyres and everyday tyres.

Lol, that's an easy one. I have a Play Car! My wife would string me up if I suggested I needed 2 sets of tyres for the GUIV. In saying that I have 2 sets for the GQ. 37" Treps for play and 35" Cooper ST for the high country. I used these on the GUIV for the Simpson trip last year, so could fit those if I wanted.

I also have a set of 35 Simex ETs that I could technally keep for playing in the GUIV but again the missus would kill me and I'd prefer to sell them and use that cash towards a turbo upgrade on the GU maybe?

The nittos look very similar to wrangler mtz's.. which is very aggressive imo.
If your looking for genuine daily tyre I b thinks it's the atz p3's, or at2's
I'm not suggesting the 980's as I'm still in the early stages of tyre life.
Wear has slowed but I still think there only a 60 thou tyre. For the price it's not to bad though and roughly on par

Noisy, continually going out of balance, be lucky too get 30,000 out of them. When wet they are very sketchy on the road. Ill admit great in the sloppy stuff but no way i would buy them again.

So as not too hijack M.R's thread, this is a tyre thats probably worth keeping off your list haha (at least from my experiance with them anyway)

Yeah hard to go past at that price. Knowing the KM2s are around at that price is the reason price is so important. If others are $400 a corner the KMs are going to win the day.

I really like the look of the 8th pics especially on those rims.
Have a look into pro comp extreme at's. I have had mine on for over 5 yrs now and have gotten over 130k out of them and they are still going strong. Don't really have good side biters though. Got a price off a bloke from beaurepairs at $370 a corner which I thought was a bit high as I only paid $315 a corner but that was 5 yrs ago.

For that price of $300 per corner for the km2 305/70/16 what's left to challenge it. I went out with mates and this tyre impressed them in the mud dirt and sand. I've never been bogged in these tyres wearing brilliantly I see no competition for that price

I assume these are a parallel import and won't carry the factory warranty. Great price though. Have you had any trouble with them at all Macca? I have sent them an email today asking for a price and fitting and will enquire about the warranty.

Not to sure about the place macca got his km2s from, but i bought mine from cornell tyres. They are in sydney and do free shipping around aus. They import the km2s themselves (as well as other tyres), and then on sell them to the public as well as tyre shops.

When i got mine i paid $300 each for a 305/70r16 plus $15 fitting, so $315 fitted. Best i could get locally was $420 fitted.

I told one of the local tyre shops that i could get them from 300 and he was pissed, started saying they were a fake and not the same, i then called cornells and told them what old mate had said and cornells just said that old mate was just pissed cause he probably buys them for $300 for his tyre shop

I used the prices from huntsman and don cornells to get jax pretty much on par. Jax were $25 dearer a tyre but this included fitting and balancing. Cornells was 375 delivered only. It might be an option for you to help with other shops and their prices.

Spoke to these guys today, they have plenty of stock, they charge $15 per tyre to fit. They are a parallel import and they match the BFG Warranty on a back to base policy, I take the tyre to them and they warranty on a prorate basis. 70% tread means70% replacement value. They have been selling them for 5 years and never had a claim.....

Why do we in Australlia put up with the rip off cluture
Tyre prices is just one are,
Fuel prices is another
Most of these tyres you can directly inport from USA directly paying full import duties and still only end up paying about half of what Australia retailers demand

Just been reading a few comments about warranty claims on this thread, you need the warranty so be careful who you buy them from,
The tyre delaminates on the inside, you won't know until it blows out, I only found out when I had an unrelated flat fixed, and got them checked and replaced under warranty.

What was their logic for not fitting 305s to the nissan time? They are a 16x8 rim and the 305s go on just fine.

My GUIV has a 130k old 3" lift on it and rides great and clears the Tyres no problem. I have Rockcrawler rims in a 16x8 neg6 offset. The nissan offset is +10.
