View Full Version : What is this tee’d off the air intake?

On a Nissan Civilian 4 cylinder diesel. I think it is a standard fitting because I’m pretty sure we had the same thing on our bus (without the tape. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/06/1.gif )
It is tee’d off the air intake between the air filter & the motor.
Can anyone tell me what it is/what it’s purpose might be?

Is it turbo?

Some sort of a resonator box ??

A similar thing was on my td42 NA before I did the turbo. I asked Tony Ynot back then and he had no idea?

If it is what andy has this will normally be an indicator for the air filter. In that location it will not work as required with a turbo.

Normally aspirated/non turbo ED33 motor (3.3 litre 4 cylinder as used in Civilians & Nissan Cabstar trucks).
What would a ‘resonator box’ do?
If an ‘indicator’ for the air filter what would it actually indicate? There are no wires connected to it.
I wondered if, because the air filter is mounted fairly low (behind the passenger side headlight) whethe it might be some sort of extra protection should water get sucked in, but if that were so I would expect the t connection to point down rather than being horizontal.

Yep. Clogging indicator.

I don’t think the Civilian one is a clogging indicator - it is a plain looking canister with no mechanical indicator mechanism & no wires attached to send a signal to a dash light..... unless it has some form of operation I haven’t considered? I’ve looked through the workshop manual & can find no reference to this thing.

What is under the tape?

I’m not 100% certain, but I think on my bus the there was either a removable end cap or possibly just a cylinder with no cap. This photo was emailed to me by someone asking for my advice as to the purpose, so I can’t look, only ask him to pull off the tape to check it out. It is possible the tape is either holding on a cap, or just covering rust holes.

Does it have an engine driven compressor?

Nope, no air compressor.

Was that maybe an overseas option? And it's just one of those things that got fitted regardless?

In saying that could it be a boost line option for the over seas turbo option?

Is it part of the pollution set up to trap fumes.
I'll ask on my rounds this morning
air pressure compensator ??

1980’s model - pre pollution gear I reckon.
I’m leaning toward Hodge’s suggestion of some sort of resonator box, which after a bit more searching this morning when I found this (http://blog.autospeed.com/2003/11/30/those-funny-things-teed-into-intakes/), makes me think it is intended to reduce intake noise, which would make sense seeings how the driver & front passenger sit right on top of the motor.

Its a pressure regulator/damper from what I was told this morning

i think your on the money with resonator to reduce intake noise. quite a few cars have an empty box in the air line to do this.

must be a Bong then,
Nah, a 4 cylinder Civilian doesn’t need any help to go slow!
