Hey guys,
My GQ RB30 had an accident over the weekend.
Somebody has apparently backed onto it while parked
No idea who the perpetrator was.
Now I'm stuck with having to fix it myself.
I can't afford to pay a panel beater atm.

Rear right hand side passenger door is dented and scratched.

Over the weekend, I managed to get the dent reasonably fixed.
But, now I'm stuck with apparently more difficult problem of
fixing up the scratches.
It is a 1990 model GQ.
I've been told that trying to get a touch up paint by following the
paint code under the bonnet might not work.
The reason being said that the paint fades over that many years and the original
code is not an exact match anymore.
I've attached an old photo to give some idea of the colour.
I'll attach an updated photo of the damage and what I've fixed so far, shortly.

How, do I get hold of the matching paint of the current colour?
I have access to a spray gun and compressor.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried to Cut and Polish that? it does not look like the paint is broken, it may well cut out. Or at least look minor and enough not to bother you. You are correct though you would have to paint the side of the car.

Hi mate.
The damage is not showing in the above picture.
It'a an old one. I'm just uploading the photo of the damage.

You can cop a heap of damage from supermarket carparks
some grubs dont give a toss

These are the pictures of the damage.
As you can see I've done an ok job with getting the dent back into a shape,
except I couldn't get the edge line, but I'm happy with the way it is for the time being.

If I'm right(as I've cleaned and tried to rub off the scratch), the white scratch is the undercoat showing.

It was from supermarket. I guess the car being a large one doesn't help.
My main problem is now(if I'm right) is to get a matching colour paint.
About half a litre or so will do.
I have a can of clear coat somewhere, as well as some putty.
What the cheapest and best approach?
I think if I can get hold of a matching colour paint, I will be fine.
Thanx mate

I'd give it a cut and polish ,then see whats left.
I use clear coat in a pen I brought on Ebay for $1

Ok, cool. I'll give it a go.

I thought, clear coat is something you have to spray?

How does it work by applying with a pen?

Also wondering following you tip, whether I can find the matching colour on a pen,
so I can touch up with a pen, rather than spraying, for the time being?

go to a crash repair shop and ask them who makes up paint in a spray can and they will match it to the paint
have a mob in Adelaide who do it $30.00 a can and also do the interior paints as well

Thanks. I'm in Melbourne.
I'll drop into crash repair shop.
Autobarn does the paint mixing and produce the colour in a spraycan as well.
Only thing is that they can't get the colour right with older cars.

with the mob here you have to leave a part of the patrol for them to match the paint
my neighbour left hic patrol there for a day and it matched perfect

Thanks mate. Autobarn is pretty useless with that. They only mix factory paint codes and get that wrong as well.
I reckon I can do that with a smash repair shop.
I can leave a side panel or barn door with them.

Super Cheap are asking $32 for a spray can colour matched.
It doesnt look that bad to me have you cut it back yet?

most suprecheap stores do the mixed cans these days, that said the damage doesnt look bad id just give it a cut and polish then go wheeling. at the end of the day once you have done a few decent tracks theres a fair chance you wont even notice that any more

Hi threedogs,
Yes, I polished it up a little bit.
Shiny and look better than before, but it's still showing undercoat where it's scratched clearly and the slight dent is showing as well(dent doesn't bother me atm, but the scratch does).
I think I'll go slowly at it while taking my time.
I'm planning to do few experiments first with an area of the car that doesn't matter, and then take it from there.
No doubt I need a fair bit experience.
There' re quite a few scratches around the car that I need to fix up, at least for the rust prevention reasons, if not aesthetic reasons.

$32 is super fine if they can get it right, but I'm not too sure.
Autobarn did a crappy job with a friends car last time, so I know it's beyond their league.
Not sure about Super cheap. I didn't know they do pain mixing. They do have a decent collection of matching touch-up paint cans though.
One of the touch-up cans is almost the same to mine, but I wouldn't know until I try it.
From what I've heard so far, matching paint and blending is not that easy.

Yeah, that's true. For example, the bonnet has so many chips on it from highway and off road sandblasting, it looks like it was accidentally sprayed white paint on the bonnet.
From distance it's ok, but from close-up, all the imperfections are visible.
Interesting thing is that the windscreen doesn't look like it's been affected with highway sandblasting. No clearly visible chips.

Where abouts in Melbourne are you?

Type auto paints into google maps and head to any of those. They will be cheaper than a panel beater, I used milsoms last time and I think it was $40 for the first one and $30 for every can after that if you keep the paint code

I don't think standard paint codes would work in my case, mate. The vehicle is over 20 years old and the paint would've faded a bit during that time.
Paint mixing places like autobarn, etc only work with standard paint codes printed on the vehicle identification plates.

To get the paint to match close enough, I would have to leave the car or a panel of the car with the paint mixer.
It's even possible to buy a can off the shelf from autobarn or supercheap that matches the paint code of my GQ.
But, I'm not too sure that's any use without knowing whether it's going to match.

Thanx

It won't be a perfect match to your current color it would be a perfect match to your car when it rolled off the production line. Getting that color match could be hard. ..ever thought about going 2 tone easyish at home cover up, change the color of your whole car or bottom half of your car.

Not sure about Melbourne, Adelaide, but Supercheap do it here. I've used it on bumpers and it is a good match. Just give them your make model and paint code off your compliance plate and they just press the buttons.
Some panel shops can scan your faded paint and mix to match.
