Hi All im about to buy a 2012 patrol 3l ive been told the engines can blow due to the MAF sensor getting oil and soot on it which can make the engine overheat and crack pistons .Is there an aftermarket item you can buy to stop oil and soot getting to the sensor .Will an air/oil catch can stop the problem ? .Im also thinking of buying a thermal fan for the intercooler are they worth the money if anyone has already done this .

Sounds like a mixture of two issues. There is a "grenade" issue with early 3l motors but not the 2012 crd model. The MAP sensor probably has nothing to do with making the engine overheat and crack pistons and although it needs cleaning now and again is not an issue as such. An oil catch can may help in keeping the sensor clean but that is not the main reason for fitting an oil catch can. Thermal fan would depend on what sort of driving you are doing IMO. The stock setup is adequate, but some believe in thermo fans on the i/c, larger i/c's and other mods.

Thanks guys Yea im getting back into my 4x4s i sold my last one about 8 years ago and ive been itching to get another one ever since .All i have last time was a 4.2l maverick had a 3inch lift & 35s on her was an industuctible rig .But now im a bit older i want to get the 2012 patrol something i can have for 15-20 years plus the only mods i want to do is a snorkel , winch and intercooler fan because ill be doing a lot of beach driving

If your talking 15-20 years I would be replaceing the nissan i/c with a tig welded one. the Nissan crimped will fail and leak at some point along the line. As I said befor weather you go for fan type or larger is up to you but definatly repalce it with a welded one.

Hello and welcome to the forum, as suggested a tigged IC will be fine . as for bang for your buck .
I dont think you'll get that much more benifit from a larger IC. Money better spent else where

Ok awesome thanks guys definently something i week look at I've heard the stock intercoolers are rubbish everyone i talk to is saying replace with a tig welded one does anyone know where i could pick up a good one around the brissy area when the time comes.
