View Full Version : Patrol - Norwegian style!

Hello people from the internet! This is my way of showing the world my life from the garage.
Last year me and my girlfriend was on Iceland at vacation. (Iceland is Arctic truck paradise!) just take a look at what i've got my inspiration to buy an Patrol!
58582
So after a good vacation i'd got home hurrying on the internet for a Patrol and this is what i bought:
58583
58584
58585
The biggest engine you'll get in a Y60 in Norway is the RD28T. you can't get an TD42 approved by the government so that is something i just have to accept (if i'm a street legal guy) :) One other issue here is the roads at winter; their salted! later in this thread you will see what salt will do to a Patro! Just warning you guys.
hope y'all enjoy!

I parked the Patrol a few months ago, think was in march, when the temperature went above 0 C. Started with the removal of the body.
I parked it so it would be available for the tractor witch lifted the body of after i've jacked the critical cm off the frame:
58588
jacked the body so i could enter the lifting arrangement:
58589
58590
After placing the body on supports i could enter the problems on the frame much easier.
58587
the issue was (as i mentioned earlier, the rust made by road salt). before any cool modifications i want on my car i need to get it in original condition. That is the current goal.

Wow rust is a nasty thing do you spray tar/pitch on any exposed metal
Roess
6th June 2015, 07:33 AM
yeah rust is nasty sh*t. well, i thought i should do something about this rust properly from the start. so i disambled the entire body frame down to the last screw. then i did send it to a guy nearby who sand blasted it and covered the frame with som zink coating.
After i received the frame from mister sand blasting i started the real job that i've actually just finnished - welding :)
i bought my self a steel plate (2000 x 1000 x 3) witch i brought with me in a too small camry '99! and started cutting plate to insert in the frame.
some pictures:
Welding machine is called Kemppi EVO 170. is this a known brand in australia, cus this is top notch in europe ( its form finland though)

we call them inverter welders , becoming very popular,
should have taken photo with plate on the Camry , very funny
In the end the frame is not too bad?well repairable from the looks of it.
Now for body lift
Roess
6th June 2015, 08:00 AM
really, the kemppi does it work! easy to work with. I recommend it!
The picture of me, steel plate and the sedan camry isn't ready for internet yet i think haha!
well threedogs, i was a bit concerned before sandblasting about this rust but really it was in better condition than i thought! and news like that is always good. so good that i celebrated with a "soda" and some good music while welding :)
well lift kit will be installed when the car has deserved it (by getting in good condition again) :)

I love the fact that you mentioned that the temp is now over 0 degrees, so now you can start work ... ha, ha, that is fantastic ..... if it goes under 10 degrees here we complain

Great to hear mate! i just saw your thread for the first time. you have already done so much work, and things are turning out great!
Are you going to just paint the frame to prevent future rust problems? also how is the rust in the body? in Australia the chassis long out lives the body, rust in the roof gutter it what kills most patrols in Australia so take special note of the condition of your gutters and the area just above it.
Are you keeping your plans a surprise or do you have something in mind such as lift size etc?
Also i would be keen to know what prices of the mods you do are like, to compare to the Aussie market. i noticed your doing a suspension lift, depending on what you're after ask about it on here, you will get some good advice regarding it(if you need it) as most of the Australian suspension mobs design their shocks and springs to deal with some of the harshest environments on earth!
Looking forward to seeing more mate.
Cheers

Hi Rusty!
Plans of the frame:
- clean frame from old tar and equipment - DONE
- sandblast - DONE
- cut out rusted pieces - DONE
- weld in new sheet metal - DONE
- sandblast again - DONE
- zink coating - DONE
- paint frame with some offshore coating
- black coating, hammerite
i think this helps to prevent against rusting for
the body is also rusted, especially around the rear wheel arches
58739
i have found new wheel arches that i will put on, but first i will finnish the frame :)
58740
the final patrol will be lifted 60mm =) this is because this is the only lift kit i hav found wich have TUV approval (need to have for approval of car) if anybody know another lift kit with TUV certificate please tell me :)

Ive noticed in the states and in the UK they spray some kind of black pitch /tar on treated surfaces for very harsh enviroment.
I like your work so far, hopefully your Patrol will last a long time, bugger that salt must play havoc with electric wires
Roess
9th June 2015, 06:00 PM
i forgot to tell you Rusty, the cost of it all:
- sanblasting and paint - 2300 AUD
- lift kit with TUV certificate - 1800 AUD
- wheel arches (one side) - 713 AUD
- the car - 6240 AUD
- 1,5 liters of hammerite :) - 89 AUD just a regular item (fun to compare)
- complete set of body mounts:
Norway: 2400 AUD
Australia: 390 AUD!!
I bought the body mounts on Patrolapart.com.au thei could send it to me :) including shipping and taxes it stilll is half prize of norwegian prices!
Yes threedogs! i can see on my 2010 E-class that it is alot of rust on the under side of the car already. the average age on a car here in norway is approx. 10 years. older than that is rusted away because the salted roads. this is a serious issue. I am also thinking of better protection for the wiring on the car as well. it will come later in the thread :)
Regarding your question rusty, about my plans beeing a suprise or not: even i don't know the plans yet haha, i am doing the plan along the car rebuildt :P its funny that way, i can even suprise my self. like these orange axles ( was not in the plan but it was fun and now i think they are cool) :)
i think this car is going to be a cool story =)
maybe black body suits the orange axles?

There are a few DIY spray on tub liners, Rhino springs to mind.
You need a colour that will allow your running gear [orange] to POP lol
There was a tar based product that you spray on via a "HOT GUN" not

I have second thought about orange axles, cause these will give me limitations regarding the color on the body... First i was planning to do a black car with the orange axles but then that got me started thinking og KTM. I dont want a KTM colored car [emoji14] so if i paint the car with army beige i think i'll change the color of the axles as well.

I have watching some DIY films at youtube and i think it looks real cool. Have you seen it for real life? This is the first time for me that i have seen a product like this, so it feels kind of cool to use a product that nobody else in a radius of 700 km have on the outside of an truck :)

The only thing that stops me from doing that is of course the difficulty of placing a TD42 in a 260 body/frame.

Hello fellow norwegian!
I've heard about Bruno from my mate who lives in Trondheim. I think i need to plan a visit, cause maybe he have som other parts as well. as you already know there are no parts, i repeat! No parts for Patrol in this country so a visit to bruno might just be it. Right now im not so interessed about engine swap. I have to take on thin at the time :) But after the restoring of the car i might just be interested in the 4.2 engine. would be fun to have it approved though!

have you tried looking on the australian used part places? with a good bit of communication you could probably convince a seller over here to ship parts to you(if you say local suppliers are THAT expensive). check out Gumtree (www.gumtree.com.au)

Just tack welded it on. Full weld will be done tomorrow: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/06/431.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/06/432.jpgi can see on the picture that the space between the door and fender is not quite parallel all way. Perhaps i should undo the tackweld and tilt the body a bit before tac welding correct. [emoji14]

Ah, Trønder, ja ;)
I'm a little bit of everything, but from this summer on, I will be living in Trondheim (NTNU).
If you want, I can PM you Bruno's number, if you don't have it. He's got like... Well, so many Patrols for spares that the Miljøvernetaten forced him to remove a large number of the cars from his property :P
I believe Bruno and his guys at his Mekonomen-approved workshop should easily be able to convert your car to a TD42 approved vehicle. That's what he told me, if I had a Y60, and not a K260 :(

I know about Gumtree, but most of the sellers there are "afraid" to ship to Norway, due to the risk of things getting damaged in transit and such. :(
Anyhow, Aussie-orders are quite expensive at the time as the AUD has become quite "stronger" compared to the Norwegian Krone. The last 6 months has been a nightmare for Norwegian economy as the international oil-prices have dropped - and so has the NOK.

they built a lot of the European 260's in Spain
and I believe there is a rather lot of the Y60 & 260's in Poland

Aye. All the 260s in Norway were short (officially imported), and the rest, like mine, a long wagon 260 was privately imported. All made in Spain. My even has Spanish only manuals and such. Not so practical...
Y60s are the most common Patrols here. But MQs and MKs are difficult to spot.

Question: the color i want is called Ral 1002. But wat kind of paint do i mix with the bedliner? Does it have to be polyurethane paint or is it good enough with some regular "steel paint" like hamerite? The internet doesent answer that question so i hope some of you guys could help me :)

Am I the only one reading Roess and Gabriel's conversation in there head with a Norwegian accent? Lol.
Mate this is an epic build. I'm sure this is going to finish off great. I'd love to be able to put those massive flares and 40inch plus tyres on my Patrol, and get away with it. As for the RD28T. I would get a new turbo of the same type, then put a 3inch exhaust system on it and a chip too. They seem to react very well with those too.
One other thing to check is the harmonic balancer. These RD28's have a tendancy to rip out the key ways on the front of the crank and cause the balancer to just spin on the crank.

Sorry to disappoint you, mate, but I've graduated in British-English, lol. Though the Russians have torn my written English apart now :P
But when you mention it, it's an utter shame that the current Secretary General of NATO speaks with a shite accent! At the Russian Diplomatic Stations we used to laughed our arses off every time we heard speeches from the former PM.
Btw Roess, how are you doing nowadays?

New update! So i have painted the car and now its time to asemble it all together. Hopefully i've got all the pictures on my cellphone to help me remember how it all was 😀 im almost finnish (96,73 % complete) with the body, its just some welding in the wheel housing at the rear but i got tired from welding so if i wanted more progres on the car i thought i would need a different perspective on it so i took the body out of the garage and i put the frame back in. Now its time to make the new brake lines and make the frame complete. When thats done, its time to take a last look at the body........ im nearly there guys☺http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/08/331.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/08/332.jpg

I am going to change the timing belt of the engine before im putting it in, and for your information; to put the transmission in by my self was heavy sh*t!http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/09/370.jpg but with som bad language and throwing tools around in my garage i somehowe manage to put it in 😊.
Yesterday it was christmas in the garage:

Nice to watch, mate. Are you planning on putting on the nomax.no bumpers front and rear, since you cut out the bottom part of the fenders? I'd love to have them on mine, but then again, I don't like spending money :-/
I'd like to be able to put as mouch time, effort and money into mine as well, but it just won't happen. Luckily, the frame on mine is fine, but a little welding on the chassis wouldn't hurt. Too bad I don't weld. If you care for another project now that your's is finished, you are very welcome to do the same thing to mine :-)
The 2.8 and the massive (??) 116 hp really isn't mouch to shout about. I've towed 3,5 tons, and it dosn't take mouch of a hill before you have to shift down, and watch the line of cars behind you grow. I've fitted a 3-row aluminium radiator in mine, and it seems to keep the temperature under control.
Rust is a big thing in Norway. All major roads are salted thru the winter, starting approx now, and going on till spring. It is worth mentioning thou, the nissans are very poorly rust protected from the factory. I used to have a 1996 patrol (same green color as this one had), and already in 2000/2001, there was signs on major rust inside the frame.
My 1991/1992 Mercedes 300 TD Turbo is still fairly good for rust, closing in on 600.000 K's. "Fairly good" mean it looks OK, and have had some brake lines and things renewed thru the years. Brake lines normaly needs changing after 10-15 years. Because of our import taxes, cars are usually driven 18-25 years before scrapped.

Hi and thank you FrodeS! Its true what you say here about the rust being an issue in Norway :/ and yes, the plan is to fit rear/front bumpers from nomax, also the roof rack, snorkel and ladder on rear barn door :) but now i need to save up the money for it ( approx 2 500 dollars) so i think it will be fitted next year☺.
Anyway, the car has started, i've been driven it a few km's. I have also tried to get it approved for the roads but the wheels that are mounted now isnt allowed apparently. Also need to fix the reverse lights, then im done for this year. Now let the winter come!!😉

I se you try to adapt the pictures for our friends "down under", but your'e doing it wrong. You have to turn them entirely around, upside down, not 90 degree sideways :-)
Any lift kit except the body lift?
I'd love to put some of that nomax stuff on mine as well, but the car was only 16k (AUD 2,7k), a bargain. As I have a little too many other cars, I haven't wanted to use the time and money on this one (yet).
Originally, your car must have looked exactly like the one I used to have.

yes mate, although the red can get even deeper the photo looks very similar to out high country, reminds me of thredbo actually.
the car looks amazing i like the textured finish on the paint, it looks mean, will it be hard to clean? so whats wrong with the tyres? they look pretty standard size to me? are they too old or something?

a set of flares on the wheel guards will fix them being too wide
a bit of plastic garden edging is a bit common on some cars over here, unless you have the original ones to put back on
looks damn good mate
well done that Man
