June ’15 Photo Competition - 'Trees’

This month’s competition topic has been chosen by our May winner Fracster

His choice is
Trees - I reckon that trees are great, I’ve even been known to hug them on occasions! To encourage everyone here to appreciate trees a little more & to see if we can break records with our number of entries there will be a one off special this month. As well as our June winner getting to choose the July topic, this month there will be a PRIZE.

I will donate a Redback Wheel bag worth $120 plus postage* (http://redback4x4.com )
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/06/28.jpg

I already had two before this one was given to me by the good folk at Genie Exhausts. (If anyone else would like to contribute a prize for future competitions please send me a PM).

*Please note....... 1. I will need the winner to send me the postage costs to send the bag 2. If there is a tie for first place I will make a casting vote. If this is necessary my decision will not be open for debate/discussion. 3. If I enter the winning photo, the prize will be kept for use in the following month’s competition.

Good luck all, & thanks Fracster

Ps. Please read though the pink bit below if you haven’t done so yet. Ta.

Pps. It always helps to post a brief explanatory caption with your entry.

Monthly Photo Competition guidelines (Please read)

* Each month a new competition thread will commence & all forum members are invited to submit their photos .

* Maximum of three entries per person.

* Multiple entries should be made in separate posts

* Each entry should consist of a single photograph & a short description only

* Comments pertinent to entries are encouraged, but please do not use this thread to engage in banter

* Photos MUST have been taken by the member posting the photos or members of their party.

* Any photo which has been a winner will not be eligible for re-entry in any future competition.

* Please do not post photos that are not entries in the competition.

* Please do not re-post other folks entries within the thread

* The winner of the month's competition gets to choose the following month's competition topic.

* All members are encouraged to vote for the photos they think should win. This will be done by pressing the 'Thanks' button located underneath each post. Toward the end of the month the date & time of competition closure will be announced. Following this time the thread will be locked & the 'Thanks' counted to determine the winner.

* 'Thanks' may be added or withdrawn at any time during the month up until the competition is closed.
You are welcome to thank as many different posts as you wish!

* In the event of a tied first place I will add a casting vote, except in circumstances where my entry is one of the tied ones, in which case I will withdraw my entry.

*Inappropriate photos eg, sexual, racist, violent etc are unacceptable & should not be posted.

Thanks for your cooperation

‘Scratchy Wattle’ (aka Red Wattle, Mallee Wattle or Acacia Monticola). This one is in the WA goldfields, but also grow in many other parts of the country. I think they are all the same species, prized for their usefulness in indigenous culture for making clap sticks (wood has a good ‘ring’) as well as digging sticks, boomerangs & even spear heads.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/06/47.jpg

Just for added interest - a pic of the clapsticks I made from Scratchy Wattle can be seen on my blog here (http://www.cuppa500.com/_Big_Trip/Entries/2009/7/27_Entry_36_-_Living_in_Country.html) (apparently not very phone friendly)

Hi everyone,
I’d just like to draw your attention to one of the existing rules (the pink bits in the first post) & a new rule added today.

Both of these rules are an attempt to keep the thread free from ‘noise’ which distracts from the photographic purpose of the competition.

I have received a number of PM’s from members who have found navigating through past & current threads sometimes harder than it need be, & to be honest having less ‘noise’ makes my job at the end of each month a bit easier too.

* Comments pertinent to entries are encouraged, but please do not use this thread to engage in banter

And the new one

* Please do not re-post other folks entries within the thread

I consider ‘Comments pertinent to entries’ to be questions relating to photographic content, location or just brief encouraging type remarks. Any open ended comments or remarks which encourage ongoing conversation should preferably be made to the entrant via PM. I am not in a position to ‘police’ the rules (nor do I wish to be) but I am requesting that we try to use all the other thread possibilities this forum offers for chat, debate & banter.

Not aiming at any individuals, just a general request. So far this month I see no issue with anything written in any posts, & with the just one ‘re-posted photo (which hopefully the poster will edit out ;) ) I wanted to get in early to act on the requests I’ve received. Thanks for your cooperation.

Thanks
Cuppa

The voting is done & the outcome was a close run thing, but we have an outright winner by one vote.

In first place with 15 votes is TPC with his photo of the trees surrounding Cullyamurra Water Hole. It’s a photo which screams ‘Australia’ to me.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2014/09/28.jpg

In joint second place with 14 votes are Megomonster & Skiman. I’ve lost count of the number of times Mego has come second with his sunset over the dead trees (at Hume weir?), it seems to fit any number of topics & I’m sure we’ll see it again, perhaps in first place some day. Skiman’s shot of the lone tree on Stockton sand dunes with not a track to be seen is eerily atmospheric.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/07/6.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/07/7.jpg

In joint third place with 13 votes are Winnie & Ozjeff. Winnie with his shot of the iconic Burke & Wills Dig Tree carving & Ozjeff with his photo of a once proud & now dead tree still standing pround at sunset.
