My patrol has been struggling to start and on Wednesday it finally refused to start at all.
Battery flat. So bought a new battery and all good.
However, the shifts have generally been a bit rough.(its a zd 3.0 auto)
Since the new battery the shifts are silky smooth.
Could this be down to the battery having more power for the solenoids?
It seems bizarre, but is there any way it could be linked.
The gearbox oil is really clean and the car has been fully serviced as per the service schedule according to the service book.

Interesting..... have you checked the alternator output at all.

I am curious to know myself mate.

I wouldn't think the two are linked. The auto shifts are done via a valve body which relies on fluid pressure. Unless these auto's are different.
Placebo affect maybe?

I'll be seeing my auto guy this week I'll ask him then.
but as BA suggests its not battery power more alternator power
that powers everything, but hey can only ask. lol

There are shift solenoids to make the fluid go where it needs to.

Thanks for the info. You think its linked to the ops issue?

It could be. But if it was the issue then the alternator should be checked. Also checking the earths wouldnt be a bad idea.

could also be that by removing and changing the battery the ecu has reset itself

Apologies for the late response, work getting in the way.
Alternator seems fine, however I have not tested it. The old battery was bulging slightly on the one side which indicates bent plates-ie shot battery.
It could be a placebo effect, but I was thinking solenoids need the correct power to operate smoothly.
Before changing the battery I was looking at changing the oil in the box, despite it being clean. But now I think I will just drive it and see how it goes.
