For some reason my winch has stopped working. I can here the solenoid clicking in and out and if I hold the button in it makes a kind of squeaking sound but nothing happens. I have disengaged the hub and I am able to pull the cable out. [emoji35][emoji35][emoji23]

What could it be and how could I fix it???????

A while ago (round a month) I fried my jumper lead by getting the crossed on the batt while trying to jump start the car.
Yes yes I am a dumb dumb. As far as I could tell nothing bad had happened to either car. Only a blown audio fuse in the engine bay, everything else was still working. I didn't even think to check the winch at the time. I did how ever notice that the 100 amp circuit breaker for the ignition was slightly blackened and looked pitted but not broken in any way. So I am getting a new one in the morn and will change it and see if that helps.

What other checks can I do before opening the winch to check the motor. ?????

Using a jumper lead you could bypass the solenoid and hot wire the winch and see if it functions in either direction: Google will tell you which post to Hotwire.

Yeah as mentioned best bet is to test the winch directly connecting it to battery. Removes a lot of questions about the motor. Have you ever had the motor apart? Mine stopped working not long after a rebuild, turned out to be seized brushes due to my error.

No I personally have not had it apart. I will get some new jumper leads and see it that gets me anywhere.

Be very very carefull what you touch with those jumper leads.
Seeing as it looks like it needs to come out anyway.
I'd feel better lol if you tested it on a bench

Agree...
If you need to use both hands to undo a bolt or whatever resist the urge to wack the jumper leads between your thighs... or at least have someone with a camera handy

If you need a hand to pull the winch out just yell.
Cant do much but can do something

Thanks for the offer TD.

Will see how I go I am going to get the multi meter out and see if I can figure out what the power is doing and progress from there before I start stripping it down as I have to remove the bar to remove the winch.

ET. I now know why you call yourself the evil twin. It would make for good watching though especially if lining on my back and as I zap myself gravity takes over and makes it a hole lot worse/ funnier.

Whilst it runs against my psche to try and give sensible advice....

Is it a WARN winch with paired solenoids or another brand with an Albright Solenoid (big black thing)?
If it is a WARN then a faulty solenoid causes weird issues IE you will hear clicks but the Winch won't run.

But... usually it will be a siezed/corroded motor or brush/brush holder/commutator ring issue.

Your winch will almost certainly be series wound IE the Field will be in series with the Armature.
If you want to test the motor.
Disconnect the leads at the control box or motor (whichever is easiest)
Using hi current leads IE jumper leads or whatever;
Short F1 to A and apply 12 volts to F2 and the motor should run in one direction
Short F2 to A and appy 12 volts to F! and the motor should run the reverse direction.
If the motor is out of the vehicle then the housing will need to grounded to -VE

Thanks heaps for the info ET.
It is not a warn winch I am pretty sure it is a tigerz with a solid state solinoid (if that helps). My knowledge of electrics is very limited. But by the sounds of your description it is that type of winch you are talking about. It has an earth on the bottom. Then f2, f1 & A. On the top. Like you said it sounds like a siezed/corroded motor as it has been sitting there for a while with out being used.

If you need to drop the Bull bar yell out.

Did you get the problem sorted?
I went to use my winch late this afternoon, (Warne XD9000) and had a similar problem with the solenoid clicking and nothing happening.a
The winch would then start but would operate for about 1/2 turn and stop, and the solenoid click again.
I noticed that the motor and cable was hot. I removed the cables from the motor, cleaned them and it appears to have fixed the issue.
I haven't used the winch for a while, but will try it again in the next couple of days.
