View Full Version : Quitting smoking

I thought that I would start this thread to assist those members trying to give up the Habit.

I have not had a smoke in over 18 Months. I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes three years ago and the Doctor was always on my back to give it up. The Nurse giving me my 6 monthly examination told me about a friend of hers that gave it up after a course of tablets prescribed by her Doctor. I asked my Doctor for a prescription for the Tablets which he gave me. Gave up smoking within a week of starting on Tablets.
I still would love a Smoke every now and then but is not a craving anymore.

Hard but well worth the effort.

I know Roofy has given up for two years and Kat is trying right now.

Any others or your Stories about giving up smoking

Yep - want to give up also ... no story as such, just know that it is time ... quit once before and didn't touch a smoke for 4 years - don't know why I started again (about 3 years ago), but rue that decision every time I light one ...

I havnt had a smoke in just on 18 years...

I set myself a goal and stuck to it. "When a pack of smokes readhes $2.00 I'll give up." I had been talking myself out of the habit for around 12 months after waking up each morning and smelling the stench of smoke on everything. So I started to smoke less each day and when they reached $2.00 a pack I simply threw them away and didnt buy anymore.

I did take up martial arts (Hap Ki Do) to give myself somthing else to concentrate on and it worked. Been getting healthier, and richer, ever since. (Well, family of four, house, mortgage and 4W drivin... not so rich...!!)

All you have to do is set yourself a goal and achieve it. Work towards it with smaller goals. You will be much happier that you did.

Cheers,

Rob

Right - you've inspired me, when they reach $37 a pack, that's it!! LOL. Appreciate what you mean mate - my intent is to cold turkey also, but the missus has to do it at the same time (she wants to also) so we aren't feeling the need around each other.

That said, I know a bit of martial arts also - it's called "Plugger Do Kai" ... But I have to be wearing my thongs (feet) when I do it and its usually only when a bee is hanging around me!!!! LMFAO!!!

Well done to all those who have kicked the habit... "The Sequel" and I both gave up nearly 6 months ago, It's been our third attempt over many years. We both gave up cold turkey, I could never come to grips with cutting back.

What has helped this time is that we both gave up at the same time and neither of us wants to be the first to give up, giving up.

As an old and sage person once said: ONE CIGARETTE IS TOO MANY, A THOUSAND IS NEVER ENOUGH

That's just as big an influence for us - the dollars (the health factor is a given though). As we both smoke, we'd probably be burning through the better part of $200 per week!!! No sh!t ... If we can pull the pin soon, that's all the dosh (and more) for the trip next year sorted!!

Rito heres somethin I've done this Anzac day will be 5 years i rekon or maybe 6. I was a hard core smoker, smoked flat out for 17 years minimum 40 a day + upto 20 captain black sweet filtered cigars! I tried cold turkey.....wasnt very pleasant to be around apparently. Tried patches 2x 24 hr patches at a time and still chaffed a pack in a sitting at the pub. Finally had enough and booked hypnosis. Havent looked back no cravings no withdrawals nothing. (Woke up with a sore arse hahahahahahhahaha) but no smokes. You dont actually go to sleep are totally aware of your surroundings. Maybe twice a year i have a dream that i light up a smoke and wawake up pissd of with myself then realise it was just a dream, and alls good. Just a friendly reminder i spose. Anyway wifey also did it and a couple of mates all still non smokers.

Mate I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to give up, i rekon you have to want to for it to work but the brain is a powerful thing .........well in some of us hahahahaha. Its an addiction that is said to be stronger than a skanky heroin addict. Good luck to all of you who wanna kick it. I too am a chronic reformed addict, i got a mate at work who i follow out for a smoke and watch him and say thigs like are you havin a nutha 1 didnt you just have 1 are you still smokin why dont give em up! hahahahahaha wont tell you what he says to me

Jeez, the pressure is on now ! I have smoked for over 20 years now, never given up. I dont smoke AT all while at work for 2 weeks. So, it's easy, you say ! As all smokers would know it's probaly more out of habit than anything. As soon as I hit that dry land the smoke is in my mouth.. Hubby smokes too, so thats pretty much one tyre a week for Katrol that goes up in smoke . Anyway armed with Champix ( the wonder drug) and Nowoolies wise words, we'll see how it goes. Maybe Loveday will be a smoke frre event.

If I go without a drink for a few days I don't even get a craving for one....strange I know!!!

My justification for not givng up is my weight, do men care about their weight these days ??
I struggle with my weight every day, and took me 3 years to loose 100 pounds, I dont want them back... I swap ciggarettes for food at work, I dont want to do that at home..

My brother has tried and failed many times from quitting smoking...

true story....He went to Hypnosis, half way through the session the guy was asking Mark questions and asked about colours and he mentioned the colour red....mark's eyes starting flickering real fast and he started to shake and then all of a sudden he yelled out "Red Rooster"..LMAO....No joke!

Apparently the guy just freaked out and thought my brother was an absolute nut job.

When Mark went to the car after the session he had 12 missed calls from the installers, he rung one of them back and next minute he knew he was half way through a ciggy without even realising that he just light up...lol

Nut job...lol

As most (?) of you know, I dont smoke at work, so no cigarettes for two weeks, then make up for it when I get home.
So, last time home, I started taking the so called wonder drug 'Champix'. That was about 18 days ago. As I am at work and not smoking anyway, I dont really know if they are having affect. The nausea and weird dreams started about 3 days ago. Easter Monday will be THE day to find out. I will say, a wise man once told me that if I tell myself I dont like taste and smell for three months it'll work. So having done that for 2 weeks before I went home and during, The taste of smokes was actually more disgusting than usual. That's about it so far. Stay tuned............

One of the reasons I convinced the boss we could afford a Patrol was because I gave up smoking 7 months ago, bought the Patrol 2 months ago and paying it off now. Every morning when I have my cup of coffee and feel like a cigarette, I go outside, have a look at my Patrol and there is no contest. I stayed on the patches until I felt I could survive without them. I still have a patch in my wallet just in case the urge gets too strong, but I have not caved in yet and don't plan on caving in.
Kat, yes some men do worry about their weight (in my case I have a height problem - I should be about 8 foot for my weight). When I gave up smoking, I started to go for an hours walk every day (and still do). Now I find that if I don't go for my walk I become cranky. Stick to it and plan on what you can use the extra money for.

I gave up when i read a book by Alan Car (easy way to quit smoking) worked for me. Id smoked for 10 years and tried to stop many times. I'm quite active and at the time of reading i was at the end of a solo bicycle ride in Africa from Cape town to Nairobi. Over 6 months of riding i was smoking and couldn't seem to kick the smokes. I was camping and riding everyday and smoking was my comfort. I heard of this book through a bloke i met along the way. When i got to Nairobi found it and it took me two days to read it and haven't looked back since. I'm quite happy being the only smoker with a group of smokers and not smoking or feeling like id like one. Its GREAT. I'm free of that thing that controlled so much of how i ran my life at the time. I realized most things i did i organised them around smoke breaks. ha - anyway thats my 2 cents on the subject. Highly recommend the book.

I to gave up 16 years ago , i smoked from the ages 15 to 30, a pack a day sometimes into a second pack , i used smoke a lot as i was a sales rep and i would light up between my calls , i changed to rollies as they are harder to have when your driving and this helped cut back consumption ,i then sat a date july 1st 1996 as we were expecting our first kid , when the time came i through out all the lighters all the ashtrays and didn't allow anyone to smoke in the house , started jogging and getting fit ...that was the last time i had a smoke , many have been offered to me at the pub or just hanging around , "just say no "

.if your serious about giving up you can DO IT ...

When I was a young lad, about 30 years ago, I was in the navy. It was then that I took up and gave up smokes.
Only ever smoked about 2 or 3 cigs - when I was out drinking.

My self cure was to do the drawback with 2 cigs at the same time. Boy did that sort me out. lol
I was sick as, and never touched once since. I do not recommend or suggest you try this 'option'
as a cure. Seek professional help.

The adds on TV atm are yukkie. I'm not in the target audience but they make me feel sick.

Haha. Cigars don't sound like a good swap. Went and got more champix the other day and doc says 'you shouldn't smoke AND take pills, it's bad for your health'. Huh ? No sh!t. Guess I'll just become fatter again, them work on that later !

Smoked for the vast majority of 40 years, took CHAMPIX for one month last August and havent had a smoke since, and I found it EASY surprised the hell out of me, still get a craving now and then but they dont last long, BUT i reckon if I had one i would be back on them full time, I actually enjoyed smoking but knew that it was time, have a new Grand Daughter and want to see her grow up, and want to live long enough to be a burden on society lol

Great !! I wish it was that easy for me. I've been on pills like 6 weeks now, and so far today is the only smoke free day I've had ( not saying I'm going to last all day) just keep counting the hours.
Yes Clunk, I've put the choccies back and got the Extra.

its paid for trips over sea`s trips up north fishing

and have done all this without touching any other money apart from whats in the safe.

much better to spend the money on me than a fag company
and apart from that i feed good in the lungs and in the head

have a think about it it might help thats why i have put this up here

Top job mate - I'm working on it, but focussing on the weight loss first ... you'd be spot on for the money saved, me and the missus both smoke and estimate we go through about $150 per week - that's $7800 per year!!!!! Gotta get off them for health I know, but that money is a bloody good incentive as you say!!

The coffee is the killer for me as well - I know they say the first is the worst (meaning the first one of the day is the worst one as you don't stop after that), but I genuinely love getting up early when the kids are all asleep etc and having a coffee and a smoke ... again, habit that needs to change ...

Hey all,

Before I start, this is for encouragement only - I'm not trying to scare anyone . . . . .

Some of you may know that I recently had to travel back to England. Long story short, my step-mum has very advanced small-cell lung cancer. This type is very aggressive, and therefore the survival rate is very low. A high percentage of cases are caused by smoking, and she has smoked from being young.
She turned 51 in April, just a month after she was diagnosed, and told that she had just 2 months without chemotherapy or 9 months with chemo. She agreed to the chemo and it started straight away, however after 4 sessions the tests showed that it was not successful, so they stopped it, and began the palliative care to make her comfortable.
She is now at home, she has good days and bad days, but still trying to fight it (she's Scottish so won't go down without a fight). She spends 20-22 hours a day on oxygen. She's on ever increasing doses of numerous drugs including morphine. She is unable to walk far, so sleeps in the lounge and walking to the front door is exhausting for her. She is only awake for an hour or two before needing to sleep again. She may not see the birth of her next grandchild, due in a few weeks.

Please take this as encouragement to quit smoking - don't risk going through this. It's a horrible disease and watching my family go through this is very hard.

And my step-mums biggest regret was never quitting smoking, before it got too late . . . . .

Good luck all - you have lots of support x

Thanks all - but I wasn't writing this for sympathy - more to try and prove that some of those nasty rumours about smoking (and it's dangers) are quite really, and affect normal people like us.

For any of you approaching 50, and have kids . . . . . . . . try to imagine saying goodbye to them.
My step-mum has 3 kids, 3 step-kids and 8 grandkids under the age of 10 . . . . . . .

stick with it all you folks who have quit . . . and for those considering/trying to quit - go for it! You have nothing to lose, but alot to gain!

After 2-3 weeks later, I said to missus, still want me to cut my hair, she said naa its ok Im glad I gave up. that was back in december 2009, cutted my hair 18 months later LOL last year august just after my daughter was born. She realise that she saved $120 a week easily now or more.
She gets tummy aches when she goes near them now
I heard cold turkey are good or toothpicks hanging out of your mouth quits smoking but who knows lol

I sorta had a new years resolution to cut back/give up. It started off fine for the first few days off work where I cut back by half say 18 odd durrys a day to about 7-8, now back at work and the stress that follows with the planning of major changes ahead it's the only thing that lets me take 5 and relax. Probably doesn't help all my flat mates smoke but lets not make excuses! lmao
Smokes took a 15% hike in price this year in NZ so that's why I wanted to cut back because affording them is becoming harder, however I find I just still enjoy smoking too much. A smoke and a coffee is something I look forward to in the mornings and that's what gets me out of bed lol

It's a mental battle and I admire the folks who have given it up, keep it up.

You are correct, it is a mental battle for sure . You have a fight with your brain and that is it! The bloody brain is very clever and acts like a devil when it comes to smokes....

I gave up 14 years, 6 months, 29 days 4 hours and 30 mins ago and I'd still like a drag. I used the patches and built model cars, to have something for my hands to do, kept away from the pub and club for about 6 months and changed my coffee drinking habit, always had a smoke with my coffee. Had the smoking dreams for around 6 months and put on a fair bit of weight, but I'm sure I'm a lot healthier than I would have been otherwise.

Looking back on it I reckon I have saved around $15 a day (in today's money), that's around $80,000. Now I know how I can afford to have and run my truck

It's an horrendous amount of money when you think of it that way hey??? Bloody Nora!!

Trying to quit myself currently, and battling - think I've gotten over the whole nicotine thing as I'm not smoking any more often, but over the last few months have gone from 12's to 8's to 4's and as of yesterday, to 2's!! No such thing as a healthy smoke I know, but to me I think mine is habitual and I have an "addictive" personality - I like em so I Hoover em ...

That said, they ARE going and sooner rather than later for me ...

I find patches and chewing gum kill the cravings but then when i stop wearing patches it all comes back.

Might go see the doctor and try that stuff tablets have to be easier then patches

Can I add a thought as a bloke who stupidly still smokes,

Hypno, Patches or cold turkey the underlying thing is, consciously or subconsciously, for it to work, you must really want to give up the dreaded drug.

And this comes from a bloke who has smoked for 35 years(started at 11, and a packet a day of 25's at 15) and have given up heaps of times, but have always gone back.

Call me weak willed, but the underlying thing is, stupidly I still enjoy my smokes. 46 now and smoke about 15 a day.

But I don't smoke in the house, car or any where near my kids.

100% agree with you! Ya have to wanna give em away. I was still enjoying/loving my smokes when I gave up (with the hypno help) I chaffed 50 cigs+20 captain black sweet filtered cigars on Anzac day (had the hypno booked the next day) and enjoyed every last drag. But I wanted to give up. As it turned out I wasn't enjoying them that's just the bloody voice of addiction telling me I was! Hahahahhaha the bugger. Shut him up for good with the brain doc tho;-)

I was smoking 40 to 60 a day for years and went on the patches nearlly 10 years ago now. Worked well but was not a Joy Ride by any means. very very occasionally i get a wiff that i enjoy but 99 times out of 100 it smells like Sh1t.

I made a deal with myself when i gave them away. I'd never buy White Jim Beams again! Never have. Jimmy Blacks is the only thing i buy now or higher up the shelf. I earned it! I can afford it because i dont spend it on smokes any more. Spoil yourself mate.

I smoked for 23years and it has been more than 3 years since stopping ,I have no exact date and think this is the right attitude to have.

I also think saying you are not a smoker is good for the mind rather than saying I am quiting or I am trying to quit .

Of all the things I have done in my life the best decisions besides my kids and sticking it out with my wife was to stop smoking, I could never go back.

I started smoking at the age of 12. Stopped for a couple of years in my early 20’s & then stupidly started again. For years I told myself that I'd given up once & could do so again ....... But didn't 'cos I enjoyed smoking.

Added complexity was that I also enjoyed smoking weed, rarely in large quantities, but 2 or 3 small joints in an evening. I always saw this as a reasonable alternative to having a few beers, not being much of a drinker.

Leading up to the age of 50 I thought a lot about giving up smoking, knowing I should for health reasons mostly, but my 50th rolled around & I didn't give up. For several months my failure gnawed away at me & then one day I just stopped, telling as many people as I could, in an attempt to make myself look foolish if I failed. Every day that I went ciggie free became an achievement I would lose if I started again. This kept me going & it is now a bit over 5 years since my last ciggie.

However I did continue to smoke the weed, still sticking to just 2 or 3 spliffs in an evening, although at times it was tempting to smoke more to compensate for lack of ciggies.
There is no doubt that doing this made my 'not smoking' more difficult, because although I wasn't touching tobacco I was still maintaining a smoking habit, albeit much reduced. I knew if I were true to myself I could not live up to the title of 'non smoker'.

Last January I stopped smoking weed too, following 35 years of use. There have been no slip ups, no smoke of any kind has passed my lips since. I don't crave tobacco nor weed, but do still 'fancy a smoke' from time to time. I believe this to be a more behavioral than physical thing..... these days easily ignored, but like Bob, reckon if I had a smoke, I could easily be back to a pack a day within a week. Sometimes I wish I could be an 'occasional weekend smoker', but it just ain't gonna happen.

My method for stopping was simply reaching a decision that I would do so. Many folk find the various aids (patches, gum, hypno etc ) very helpful, but I knew that for myself the overriding factor would be willpower. Every day of achievement reinforced my not smoking & the idea of 'wasting' that achievement kept me going.

A mate who gave up successfully, about 8 years ago, did so using patches, but he put himself on reducing dosages of the patches, cutting them up to give himself smaller & smaller doses of nicotine over quite a long period. Worked for him....... It's all about mindset I reckon, & what works for one is different to what works for another.

Think about it, let it gnaw at you & eventually you'll give up. Just don't leave it too late.

Set yourself a date. :)

Cuppa

Ps. I can even enjoy a coffee without missing a smoke these days, something I once thought impossible.

Great work guys!

Wife and I are scheduled to chuck in the smokes after this weekend. For some reason she needs to start on a Monday?

Both been smoking for over 30 years and although we've had the odd period of success, longest was about 4 months, we always manage to slip back into the bloody things. As we will be retiring next year we figure the $200 per week can be much better spent on doing a ton of other more enjoyable things. Apart from the health issues this is one of the main motivating factors, that and the fact that you feel like a social pariah these days.

Stress is a real trigger for the boss, so I better get all my goodies for the Patrol ordered this week so she can be stress free next week :)

OK to start
Ya gotta actually want to give up, i loved smoking really did and was a fairly hard core smoker, if ya could smoke it i did (no, not the crack hore stuff either) cigs cigars (mmm captain black sweet filtered cigars like smoking chocolate hahahaha) pipe baccy you name it. BUT i wanted to give up, be a non smoker. Didnt read much about it (hypno) but was over wearing 2x 24 hr patches nd still chaffing 50+ a day let alone a session at the pub!! Nicco chewys smokeless cigs was costing me a mootsa. So heard about a 50yr hard core smoker (mates uncle) who went to a bloke here in Adelaide and BAM never touched em again no withdrawals, nothin. So i think WTF not give it a crack $200 wasnt gunna bust the bank.

So anyway typical how youd imagine a physcologists practice to be, nice big leather recliner, bit of incence ya get it. Anyway it started with watching the watch concentrating only on the watch.......................closing your eyes.....................................
At all times you are totally aware of whats going on around you, if someone was to walk into the room youd open your eyes straight away so its not some full on deep hypnosis, just a state of pure relaxation. He makes suggestions, like you will not like the smell of cigs the smell may even make you feel crook. When you see someone smoking you will think how stupid they look and why would you do that to yourself etc etc. Then He turns off a light switch which is "symbolic" of the addiction. Warns you if you even take one drag on a smoke after that you will be turning the addiction back on. Takes about half hr 45 mins, and BAM for me no more smoking :)
He encourages you to have a smoke on you way to see him but know thats gunna be ya last. Dont have ashtrays at home or other smoke paraphenalia (sorry no spell check). My missus did it also but only lasted 6 months no cravings at all but went overseas backpacking through china and started up before i caught up with her, went back 1 year later and hasnt hed one for 5+ yeasrs now.
So when we got home we knew we werent smokers but didnt know (sounds weird i know) just felt like we were missing out on something but couldnt pin point what. That feeling lasted the night and by the morning i new id never smoke again. Went to site the next day and the smell was frokn shocking hated the smell of cigs. First couple of yeasrs had like bad dreams (not nightmares) that id started smoking again and was bulk pissed off with myself, but happy as when i woke up in the morning and realised it was a dream :)
Ive reccomended 3 mates to this bloke and theyve all been successful.
I was telling myself for the week leading up that on such n such a date id be a non smoker and smoked flat out until i walked through his door. Good luck with it man its the best thing to get rid of guaranteed
Oh gotta say his voice was weired as when hes talking to you while yer "under" very syllabolistic still makes me chuckle when i think about it. heres a link to the bloke i saw and the method he uses, go for it!!

I have already posted in here but you have to really want to and be a non smoker not a "I am trying to quit" person.

Do not be fixed on when you quit, pay little mind to it and only look forward.

It is the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with but after 23 years of smoking I could have bought 2 houses and lived a much healthier life.

You have to take responsibility for your self and not blame the stresses and the world around you.

They reckon there is nothing worse than a reformed smoker, bleating bleating, bleating well i'm a reformed smoker and I reckon there is nothing worse than smoking and I reckon if I bleated enough and only one person gave up I'm on a win. I gave up when i was 20 just stopped...all good for 25 yrs till i hooked up with a women who smoked like a train i started again, smoked for 2yrs then I just flagged it stopped in a heart beat, best thing I ever did 2yrs later had a blockage just bout killed me...if I had continued smoking I'd be smelling the daisies. While I was recovering a good mate had a heart attack BANG dead on the spot he was a small light weight fella (50yr), but smoked cigars like there was no tomorrow. Since then I have had 5 mates die from heart attacks all blocked arteries from smoking and all in there very early to mid fifties. Don't just think of yourselves you fellas when you enjoying that fag thinking how good it makes you feel....think of your missus, think of your kids, think of your mates, think of every one that means something to you and tell yourself you rather be around for a few more years and enjoy them all, than enjoy that killer that you sucking into your lungs for that brief two minutes....I know what I'd rather do, who knows ya missus might want to give you a big smoocher cause ya smell good.....this is bleating I know, but I reckon if one person stopped smoking after reading this I'd be the happiest camper around.... anyway how the hell are you going to enjoy driving ya big Nissan around if you lying on ya back.

Yeah I am like you John and never hassle anyone that smokes just because I gave it up.
Always willing to inform anyone of how I gave them up and help in any way I can.
Some reformed smokers give me the S..ts the way they carry on.
Having smoked for over 50 years I know how hard it is to give it up.
Glad I managed it in the end
Good luck to those people trying to give it up

It's the best thing you will ever do.
The book doesn't even carry on about how bad smoking is for you rather how to beat the nicotine trap.
Google the book And read the reviews.

Good luck!

Here is the link i read it from.

well, I have never been a smoker. My parents both smoked and as kids we were "smokers" whether we liked it or not.
Who remembers those drives where both parents would light up just out of town and not stop puffing till they hit the destination!
Well, from the kids perspective I can tell you parents who do this, its bloody criminal!
I can remember sitting in the back of our HT wagon in transit on family holidays to the 'Big Smoke" (Sydney) with tears running down my face due to the insesant cigarette smoke.
No windows down, oh no that would waste the smoke,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, go figure!
Sorry, this wasnt meant to be a rant,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, anyway, the sooner you give up or at least reduce the sooner your loved ones will thank you for it!
And remember, its not only your health it affects.
Regardless of how "minimal" you think your smoking is on your children and or loved ones, it's never completely out of their breath,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, food for thought!

Both of us are smokers.
I have taken it up more times than I have given up.
I know its not good for your health, as well as others, but I do question what would happen if cigs were band completely.
The govt would suffer a huge loss in taxes.
They would most likely raise or introduce new taxes to compensate for the loss.

Off the smokes, starting today. We were supposed to stop on Monday but the pack just never seemed to run out by the end of the day so there were always some left to start the next day. Yeah could have chucked them but you know how it goes.

Anyway, the boss isn't quite ready to stop yet, and nothing worse than trying to stop when you're not ready.

So, I put the patch on this morning and have decided that for every $ she spends on smokes I'll spend the same amount on bits for the Patrol. It may, or may not, motivate her to stop asap but the longer it takes her the more bits I can get :)

All the best to everybody that's 'having a go'

Smoking's not the only hard habit to break.

Hang in there people.
