I think its going to be the biggest recall in history to be honest

Rock Trol
20th May 2015, 08:35 PM
It's the biggest recall already and they have not stopped expanding it. Apparently this company had 20% of the airbag market so from 2003-2007 that's a lot of cars!

couldnt find your info but gov site has this

NISSAN—N16 Pulsar, Y61 Patrol, D22 Navara, A33 Maxima and T30 X-Trail vehicles
PRA number: 2014/14182
Date published: 27th June 2014
Product information
Product description
Nissan N16 Pulsar, Y61 Patrol, D22 Navara, A33 Maxima and T30 X-Trail vehicles built between April 2001 and June 2003.
Identifying features
Campaign number: R1407
Target number: 25,941
What are the defects?
This is an amendment to the affected vehicles in the previous recall campaign that was launched globally in 2013.

The front passenger air bag inflator contains propellant wafers that are required to properly deploy the air bag. Some incorrect propellant wafers with insufficient density might be installed in certain inflators. This may cause the combustion rate of the propellant to increase inside the inflator, which can lead to internal pressure rising suddenly during air bag deployment and may result in abnormal deployment. In certain cases, the inflator housing may rupture and the metal fragments may scatter.
What are the hazards?
Abnormal passenger airbag deployment or metal fragment scatter may pose a hazard to the occupants of the vehicle.
Where the product was sold

Nationally

Traders who sold this product
Authourised Nissan dealers
Supplier
Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Pty Ltd
What should consumers do?
Owners of affected vehicles will be advised to contact their Nissan Dealer to arrange for replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator. The replacement will be at no cost to owners.

I called my local Nissan dealer at Ferntree Gully this afternoon as I thought I may be impacted as well. At this stage they don't have any more information at all (seems the media and ACCC are well ahead of the ball game), they are still waiting on confirmation on the year range / VIN numbers impacted by the recall before they can start advising owners.

I got the letter last week for my '06 GUIV. However it only says passenger side. Due to a fault moisture may get in and deteriorate the propellant leading to abnormal deployment, but i'm guessing everyone already knew that lol. The point of interest in my letter is that it says "Due to large demand our expectation is that replacement parts will be available in Australia in early Feb 2016".
Is this a myth considering a bunch of you have already had it fixed by Nissan?

Don't know to either. If they can get at it with the glove box removed then wouldn't need to remove the dash I assume, else out comes the dash.

My Mrs dropped it off at the dealer early in the morning and picked it up late afternoon, she works just down the road from them so it was easier for her to drop it off. The "man" said all done when she picked it up, no issues he spoke of, no "obvious" signs of what they actually did. The $0 invoice says "Carried out recall R2508, PATROL TAKATA AIRBAG"

Hi Chubba,

All handled by AUSTROADS using the NEVDIS program: http://www.austroads.com.au
The system handles all safety recalls, police licence and registration checks etc. it's a national system and no longer state based. I was part of a small team that developed, wrote and maintained the application years ago. For a safety recall the maker supplies the VIN range and the application supplies the registered owner details.
System has probably been improved since I worked on it but it's a nifty application.

Many say to get the dash re apolsted is around the $700 mark..
Nissan are only willing to cover 50% of the dash so that's still $1000...

Rock Trol

I called Nissan a few weeks ago regarding my bubbling dash in anticipation of them recalling my car for the airbag (April date). They fobbed me off and said there was no recall for the dash so they couldn't help.
If they do remove the dash then it might be a good idea if I get them to change it.

Does anyone know if they have changed the material on the dash from that cr@ppy rubber to something more durable? If its the same material then I'll probably keep mine and hide it under the dash mat. I sort of remember reading somewhere that they replaced the originals with a plastic unit but I am not really sure if that's correct.

I called Nissan a few weeks ago regarding my bubbling dash in anticipation of them recalling my car for the airbag (April date). They fobbed me off and said there was no recall for the dash so they couldn't help.

I have had mine replaced and the material did not seem any different.

I have a 2005 GU IV (4.2TD). Around November received a letter advising my Patrol would require the replacing of the airbag. They also advised I would receive another letter when it was my turn to have it replaced.

Still waiting

Received my letter the other week and booked the it in for a couple weeks time. Service guy said it would only take an hour to complete - has anyone else had theirs done, how long did it take? Trying to work out if I just hang around and wait or arrange a lift home...

When my 3L went in mate, they wanted the car all day. Not sure whether the actual job took ALL day, but yeah.

Nissan replaced my air bag last Friday. I took the car in at 11am as requested. I waited around for the job to be done. At 11.30am they moved the Patrol into the service centre and it was completed by 12.30pm. So it's an hours job to do but depends on what else they have scheduled.

I had mine done several weeks ago, service tech did it outside the workshop so I had prime time view how it is done. It took him 35 mins to complete the actual replacement and then the car just sat there for another 50 mins unattended.

So to remove the passenger SRS airbag assembly, remove is the glove box compartment then reach up to undo bolts to take the whole assembly out roughly 12 mins. Remove the inflator tube fit new one about 5 mins then refit everything back. He even had a chat with his mate for 5 mins while doing the job....

What confused the technician on my truck was when he went to power the system and start the engine the glow light stayed on (I rewired it that way so it stays on when glow is on) so he went to tell his superiors and left it for the next clown to check, scratch his head and then give up....really funny to watch.

They would normally tell you 1.5 hour for the job if you're waiting for it.

I thought it was only earlier model patrols that were affected as well...Most people impacted received their letters months and months ago

I'm pretty sure it was both. As they are all from the same manufacturer.
Actually I remember few people complaining to Nissan as their Patrols returned with the steering wheel not centred after they replaced drivers air bag. So must be both ...

I'm yet to get mine done also...

When's yours booked for replacement? Have you tried your luck getting dash replaced at the same time?

Mine was booked in once and then cancelled because they ran out of parts. And I remember asking about the dash, even if I pay for parts when I re-book it, or something along those lines. The manager quietly told me, if I want to wait until the dust from the whole airbag thing settles, I might have a chance of Nissan honouring the full dash replacement... (Yeah right).
I've since then kind of forgotten about it, which was my mistake...

Ah ok fair enough, thought most of would have been completed by now

I had the dash replaced within a couple
months of buying the patrol (almost 3 years ago now), and we had to pay labour, about $500ish, and Nissan paid for the dash replacement, was told around $2k mark
