Does anyone know if the crank case breather hose in the ZD30 CRD engine has a regulator in it or is it a straight through hose?

I took my catch can off today as its in the way and it also doesn't catch that much oil. After 2 years of operation its caught about 150ml of oil. I clean the MAF regularly and have not noticed any oil on it so I am planning to monitor its condition over the next few months. I had a look at the hose coming out of the rocker cover and it is empty. I thought that they contained some sort of device in them (regulator) but I am not sure.

Does anyone know if the hose should be straight through or contain a regulator?

Straight through hose mate.

Straight through hose mate.

Thanks mate. That's a relief!

No dramas. I just went to the garage, as I still have the original piece to confirm my answer as it's been a while since I fitted my catch can. Yes 100% straight through pipe that came off a stock engine.

Thanks for that Hodge.

hi what sort of catch can are you using

It's a Cross Country catch can.
I had it installed when I had the CC Intercooler put on the Patrol. Grant (CC) at the time did not think CRD's really needed it as they don't breath as heavily as the older Di's in his opinion but I decided to put it on just in case. After 2 years I figure it doesn't do enough to justify it's bulk under the engine bay. A mate as the same type on a Di Patrol and it catches a lot more oil vapour.

FWIW Rock Trol. My CRD catches about 50mL a month, on average. I don't know if I have a stuffed turbo, but I doubt it. I do however have a warped manifold. Now supposedly this somehow causes blow by, and causes the catch can to fill up quicker. Kevin07 had this issue.
I am only suspecting this is the case in mine too.

I had the warped manifold as well (fixed in January this year) and it did not increase the amount of oil in the catch can but I did notice a lot of oil weeping out of the turbo hoses. After the manifold was fixed this has cleared up. 50ml a month is a lot so either our motors are different or your catch can is more efficient. Are you using a Provent?

I have the EGR blocked so I am not too worried about the oil vapour. MAF tends to be clean and I only check it yearly. Now I will do it every 5000 km to be safe.

Yes Provent 200. I don't know why mine is picking up that much but it is very consistent. But maf is clean, and I give it a squirt with maf cleaner monthly as part of my checkup.

Could be that the CC catch can isn't very efficient. Who knows.
To be honest, I am getting over the paranoia of being a ZD30 owner. I've done enough to be confident in it so now I'll just drive the bl00dy thing.

The Provents are very efficient in their job. Just don't use the washable stainless filters that are sold with them now. Yes even I sell them with it. I have too. The washable filter don't catch the oil like the original fibre filter does. I ran a test to see what the difference would be.

Fibre filter : 125ml @ 5K service
Stainless washable filter : 30ml @5K (Note : the element weighed in at 283g dry, after the 5k service it was 320g) Is 37g equivalent to 95ml of oil???

As for the hose. On the Di's they have a small plastic bush that was inside the hose from the motor. You could feel it when you squashed the hose with your fingers. I don't have it in their anymore. I get around 125ml per every 5K service from my Di. The motor doesn't use an ounce of oil, doesn't blow any smoke, apart from the diesel burn, so I'm not too fussed. Just service it every 5K with good oil and I'm set.

Thanks Mudski. I knew I had read somewhere that there was something in the hoses but I guess the CRD's don't have them.
Whats it look like? Do you know what it does?

I just looked like a white plastic bush that was shoved into the hose. Not really sure on the function though. Obviously to regulate the vapours, but why I don't know.

Sounds like a restrictor of some sort. Can you remember how wide the hole was.

I just called Nissan service dept (2 different franchises) and they could not locate a part number for the restrictor, only the whole hose assembly ($36). They don't have one in stock though so could not check if it had a restrictor in it.

I will check the MAF regularly and if no oil will leave it like that.

I was told the PCV valve is fitted inside the hose on a DI. Not sure what happens if you run without the PCV.

Ok, after reading the above posts, I felt a bit silly telling Rock there is nothing in the hose. So, I have just checked my workmates 2007 CRD ute & triple checked my hose at home in the garage, and it does not have anything in it. Just the hose.

Thanks Hodge. I was in at Hi Tech diesel swapping the filters from 5 micron to 30 micron compact ones for the FM100 and I asked the guy there about it. He didn't think they needed one either.

The Nissan parts guy said that all the valves where in the rocker cover so I think it's all good and I won't need anything extra.

I have a 3.0DDi with 90,000km and Provent 200. I seems to collect around 40 ml in 2,000 k light running, double that towing a camper over real hilly country.
