Hey guys, the title says it all really, this is my 1st post.... I am a locksmith by trade and the only mechanical work i did was in high school and i stripped apart a few small pump engines and then a 4cly motor. However never really dealt with a whole car and motor per say but i do know the basics to it and have a mechanical mind.
I've been doing my research and looking at what sort of car it i have. I got this car off my oldies a while back and they didn't tell me much but now i wish to fix it up as a hobbie and take it camping so i need it to be working fine.
It is a Nissan Patrol 1992 model, takes petrol not diesel and I'm not sure on the oil, maybe the 4.2L... that's all i know. I've have attached pictures of it so and the rego sticker so it may make it easier to identify.
While doing research I've found that it could be a GQ or a GU... I'm guessing one is petrol and one is diesel.
Looking at the car manual that came with it I'm putting 2 and 2 together and saying it is a TB42E engine.57983579845798557986

I also had a mechanic come do a service on it a while back and he wrote a list of things that needed fixing. I wish to try and do most of them myself to save money. I got myself a repair manual book so I can't go wrong. I've also looked on the patrolapart.com page for all the parts but I'd like to get reassurance off you guys who have more knowledge on this sort of thing then I do.
Some of the problems i have with my car is that when i take it up about 80kmh and further it starts to vibrate something cronic. Its not the tyre pressure because I have double checked them and they are fine (apart from the fact that i need new ones ASAP haha). I'm not sure if that is related to the LHF axle seal or another thing again?
Also when i change gears up or down and no matter how slowly and easily I put start to accelerate there is a really big "CLUNK" coming from under the car. I'm not sure if that could be related to the clutch slave cly or something else again?
Any help and links to the right products I need to fix up my car would be a big help.
Thanks guys :D

Are those mags for a Ti only or were they fitted to all the late model GQ?

With such little experience I wouldnt recommend doing it all on ur own. I would suggest having a mate help u.
As for the vibrations, u have discovered the Very common death wobble. There are a number of thing it could be. Tyres not balanced correctly, bent rims, steering damper is worn out, bushes flogged out... etc. The patrols are bad for it but usually its an easy fix.

Pretty positive they are a TI mag. The wheel nuts for those things are a bastard. Genuine only and they aren't cheap.

Definitely a TB42E efi GQ model. Maybe a Ti or an ST with Ti rims. Looks like the drivers electric mirror has been replaced with one from a ute. Are the velour seats, leather or some sort of cloth?

Hi omfgitzdav,
Welcome to the forum, I'm a newbie joiner but have been watching and learning for a few years now.
I've started off small but have learned heaps from the threads on this forum, enough to know what I can do myself and what I might need help with.
If you have look through the threads and search up the parts in the search bar you will find plenty of info and photos, from there you can make your own mind up whether to tackle it yourself or not.
Good luck :)

mate pretty much everything you need except the ps hose and air intake duct can be obtained from you local repco/bursons which should save you a bit of coin on freight.
as for the front axle seal if its leaking oil at the knuckle means the inner seal located in the skinny part of the diff just before the knuckle is leaking and you need to dismantle the whole corner to change it, your going to need a full swivle hub kit, and need to clean and regrease the wheel bearings and cv joints, its not a hard job but it is quite messy

Try to learn as much as you can. It's a long process, but worth it. In my case, it's a life saver as well, not just money.
Haynes Manual is a very good one. I don't have the Gregory's, so I don't know how good it is.
You can download it from this forum.
The clunk you're hearing most likely related to the clutch issue. If you are going to replace it yourself, you need a bleed kit as well(brake bleed kit from Super cheap auto, it's around $10).
You need a good collection of tools. I've gathered mine over few years. Because of the initial spending on tools, you may not save any money with the repairs.
But, the tools stay with you, as well as the potentially life saving knowledge which would depend on your 4WD activities.
I usually don't go for professional level tools like Sydchrome etc, 'cos for backyards jobs, middle range quality tools are fine.
Brake pads are easy to do. Buy them from Burson, etc. You will need a "Pressing Clamp".(buy from super cheap auto)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-pcs-Heavy-duty-G-CLAMP-SET-1-2-3-malleable-cast-iron-powder-coating-83809-/351301484579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item51cb334023
When you press the brake cylinder piston in, make sure you align the clamp rod in the middle of the piston.
Brake rotors are cheaply come by from ebay, as well as pads, and most parts, or go to burson, supercheap, repco, etc.
Front rotors are not as easy as they come with the hub+bearings as single unit. So, you need patience, time and tools.
I say, start with simpler stuff and move into the not so simpler stuff. Follow the manual as much as you can.
Again, you need a good collection of tools. Unless you already have them, it will take some time to gather them.
Tappet cover(Rocker cover) gasket is the easiest to do in the list.
Just buy the gasket from Burson.
Genuine Patrol parts are more expensive than after market ones. So, take that into account, considering the vehicle is 20 years old and how long you wanna keep it for as well.
I buy genuine parts when necessary and after market ones depend on the budget and situation.
Cheers
