View Full Version : Diesel fuel tank, whats inside

I had my diesel fuel tank repaired on the 89 gq 4.2 diesel wagon as it was leaking around the spigot the drain plug screws into. I pulled the sender unit out to make sure tank was clean inside before re installing it but there is a half size ice cream container size plastic box container free floating around in the tank that is not connected to anything.

Is this normal or has it come adrift from something?

What does it do?

If it's a tin like thing about 90mm diameter then this is a little fuel cup which is supposed to be welded to the floor of the tank and the pick up tube sits inside it.

Apart from that they have no baffles which I found surprising when I opened mine for the first time.

Its not something the repairers left in there?

No its not tin its plastic container about 6inch long x 4 wide 2 thick, someone on the GQ Facebook page said its a baffle and should be clipped in which it is not.

this is from another forum

i have had this happen in my td42 wagon, got told it was a surge bottle of some kind?, its supposed to be mounted onto tab that it spot welded to the top of the tank pasanger side of the sender hole, so when you are on a anlge it spills out of the bottle and and fills the bowl up where the pickup sits, not sure if its true or not but its what I got told, if you can find the tab it is supposed to be sitting on the inside its hard to slide it back on but saves replacing the sender

Hi all! Sorry to reheat an old thread, but this was the only decent thread online that actually discussed this piece.

I figured it out! The plastic baffle lives against the roof and covers the intake of the breather tube (the smallest of the three tubes coming off the tank)

I figured it out!

Thanks a lot mate! That was a true mystery to me! Not founding anywhere to clip it, I have actually cut it in half and dumped it for not having it clunking inside the tank.
