received my copy of 4x4 action and found there was a reasonable article about problems with 3 ltr diesels of various makes and models which i found interesting and may be worth a read for the owners of them on this forum.

also has the list of worst 3ltrs from manufactures and both zd30 and the d4d toyota lead the pack but they do say that the common rails if serviced correctly will be as good as anything, it all comes down to getting it checked regularly by an expert due to all the electronics and high pressure in the rails. they even recommend changing the injector fuel pipes as the high pressure destroys the metal pipes from the inside.

Got a better chance if catch can and such are added and regular servicing
and the fuel lines youd have to pick a mileage on that one and change regardless of what condition there in
that's a tricky one

I got this issue and took it camping recently and read a bit of it. Was surprised to see the D4Ds up there too. Despite their recent injector issues, I thought they were pretty good.

They also lead the pack due to popularity as well.
The biggest issue seems to be fuel systems.
Also another problem is the so called "experts" that don't seem to understand. Some "fuel pump" failures are actually no more than a simple control valve. Correct tooling and understanding is essential. But as with anything more experience will mean better understanding in the future.

Also you would be surprised at which point the lines fail its not where you would think. Lines can get expensive though but can be a problem for new injectors causing failure again.

Do you mean, for instance if the injectors fail due to contamination, and you replace them and leave the same lines, new injectors will get re-contaminated from crap still left in the old lines and/or pump ?

Well the contamination can come from the lines failing which is after the filter obviously. So particles go through your new injectors and can cause failure even if everything to the rail (not the line) is perfectly clean.

Makes sense.

Also, I don't subscribe to the whole "Service it and she'll be right" thing at all. Yes it helps and may prevent failures. But if somethings gonna give, especially the ZD30's , it will give regardless.
My oil and filters were changed every 5k, fuel filter every 20k, always fill up at same local servo. Car is not driven hard at all, never towed. Yet it is the most unreliable engine I have ever owned.

Mate just blew 3 and 4 on his d4d extra cab hilux 07 model. Had to say I told you so
but not happy it happened to him out of pocket and all,
He even changed the injector washers knowing they were a problem.

absolutely these old lines could cause failure again when I had the old navara and got water in the fuel the repairs included chemically cleaning the tank and lines and replacing all the lines from the rail to injectors as they cannot clean them due to the pressure that has been through them. I think from memory them lines were about $900
