View Full Version : failed to start first time, finally started the second time around

As stated went to start it and it wouldnt fire, I let the plugs glow until the light went out,,,,nothing
Tried again and it started in a cloud of black smoke[fuel]
I take it my Glow plugs are US and need replacing, is that correct,
they have 220k and I believe them to be original.
As Kallen suggested recently is start giving them a squirt with CRC,
Are these plugs ok

Not sure if they are tungsten or ceramic.

I guess that's a personal choice though.

Didn't some ceramic glow plugs break tips and the broken bits scratched stuff inside the motor ??? If so, maybe get the other ones.

Oh I thought these were tungsten tipped, the search continues lol
Cant I fit ceramic and change every 50K or so
forgot to mention the Patrol sat idle all day Sunday

Did you try priming the fuel bladder at all ??

Yea the tungsten last longer but when they fail cause more damage.
The ceramic wear quicker. Change more often.
Unsure of any operational differences.

I tried pumping it a week or so ago and it was worse, so dont think its losing fuel pressure at this stage

Seeing as Ive not been doing many big trips, well big enough to charge to battery.
I thought Id put the start battery on charge for a while and see the results, WOW
motor spun like a top and started in record time, to anyone else cold weather will show up a poor battery
My battery was not faulty just down a few volts. my gauges were reading 12.3 volts to 12.4 volts
it should be minimum 12.6v but happy as , bummer I splashed out on new glowplugs but they are in the spares cupboard now
Happy camper, didnt think it was a major problem

Very good point TD. Sometimes my car appears to be struggling a bit on cranking power... I believe it is still an original battery.

did you try disconnecting the battery for an hour or cleaning the maf sensor!!!!???????? ;)

Maybe he used a scotchlok connector.
