I have an aluminium tray on my Patrol, it does the job but it looks crap and dents too easily. I want to replace it with a steel tray with toolboxes underneath. I'll get a decent canopy made then and fit my rooftop tent etc, I'm setting her up as a tourer.
Any recommendations for good quality trays? I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I want a good one rather than a cheap one. I'm in Northern Vic but can travel.
cheers

With all your planning to do, you might be better off getting a custom made tray from a reputable shop.
By the time you factor in all the cost of the modifications to a steel tray to get it how you want it, and the purchase price of a new tray, you will probably find it comparable $$$ wise.
Plus it will be exactly how you want it.

Agreed, I want a custom tray, just need to find a good builder. Once they build it I can't send it back so want to know they are good at it from the beginning.

Go round to a few shops you can find. Generally smaller shops do better work I find. Ask to see some of their work. Most ahold be happy to discus exactly what you want. I can't rexcomend any down your way unfortunately. But good luck in your search.

Don't forget the weight of a steel tray with a canopy. Coil cabs have a GVM of 3150kg. My aluminium tray with steel roof canopy with canvas sides and steel lockable screens weighs in at 2700kg with fridge, bed frame, kitchen box and water tanks all empty.
Have a look at some of the members build up threads so you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I'd stick with an alloy tray, from new you may treat it better than the previous owner.
Last thing you want is to travel too heavy its just asking for problems before you start

If you look at my signature, you'll see who's got pods. Go to their build and see what they've got.
If I've forgotten anybody, I'm sorry.
Take care out there.
