Winch Bar Compatability

I have a 1997 GU and I'm after a second hand winch bar, there seem to be two types: 1997-2004 and then 2004-2014. However, the 2004-2014 winch bars seem very similar, will they fit the early patrol or do they need modification to fit?

I have read that the 2004-2014 winch bar will fit the 1997-2004 model but it leaves a gap between the bull bar and the grill, is this correct?

Yes, that's right.
I have a later model winch bar on my GU1.
I personally don't think the gap matters, plus paint the bottom of the grille black (part that would be hidden with the right bar) and it's even less noticeable...

I have an earlier model ironman on my 04 and the only down fall i have found is i have lost about 1 inch clearance up front when it comes to creek crossings it can be a slight issue but in saying that it has also given me enough room to mount my air tank right in behind the winch
