Hi all

I'm about to change the rear diff oil in my patrol (2007 CRD). Reading through previous posts most people are saying to use 85-140 grade. The owners manual says to use 80-90 grade. I also checked the penrite website and it suggests also to use 80-90 grade.
From my understanding (and correct me I'd I am wrong), 85-140 is thicker and more suited for warmer climates. Therefore it should be better to use here in Australia.

So my question is it ok to use 85-140 for my patrol or should I stick with what the owners handbook suggests?

Thanks in advance

NEV

The 80/90 is for open diffs like the front and for the ones with the factory vacuum locker or aftermarket lockers and is generally a mineral oil. The lim slip takes 85-140 in all my books (workshop bible, penrite lubricant guid, etc) keep in mind tho penrite have 2 types of 85-140, 1 with the friction modifier mixed in the other separate.

Hi Nev what did you end up going with? My book also says to use 80W90 LSD oil in the rear (08 CRD), as does the caltex product finder webpage. But every one seems to recommend the 85/140. Confused.

Up to 2006 rear with LSD SAE140API with 10% friction modifier or 80W-90API GL5 for diff locks
Post 2006 Nissan hypiod LSD 80W-90 GL5 or equivalent and as above for diff locks

Edit-- This is from Haynes workshop manual and for my 2006 ute from the Nissan owners handbook

If your book recommends it, then use it. I reckon. Atleast you have whats recommended in it then.
