Hi looking at a possible engine replacement in my shorty, of which is mainly used for moving boats around on the eastern seaboard, so hopefully using the knowledge base here I can make the correct choice for my needs...

Thanks PW

Just saw your other thread. I think the d is meant to be an e...

The 4.2 engines are a tough engine. And will handle a turbo easily.
And the grunt is down low so not much difference there.

For me between the 2 it would be a turbo tb42e.
Much simpler and cheaper to do.
Manifolds and exhausts are so cheap these days as everyone is turboing the td42 and to the best of my knowledge manifolds and things like that are all the same pattern.

A new ecu that can be mapped, maybe a fuel system tweak and your done.

Much simpler than a conversion and splicing looms, running new fuel lines, gearbox stuff.

I think end of the day it's personal preference. A ls1 with tow a boat with ease and do anything you want, but is expensive and rego will be higher. A turbo tb42 will also tow a boat with ease, but won't have as much power but has cheaper rego.

Side note, I own a 6L v8 as my daily (L98, still a small block chev, virtually identical to a ls2), and it's wicked. But it's expensive. One day I would like to bolt a turbo to my patrol over dropping a v8 because I don't need a race car as a 4wd. A turbo will give my patrol a bit of extra go. And torque for towing.

The engine code is TD42. What are you asking?

He's asking for pro's and cons of towing a boat with a TD42 or LS1...geez Chrisso...lol

What's in the shorty now??
How heavy is the boat?

Well that sorta doesn't change things lol.
The td42 is still a tank and will pull till the cows come home.
And will be a lot more efficient than the ls1 towing.

I would think putting a free flowing exhaust and a turbo on your 4.2 diesel will be a great towing set up.
Wont break the bank either and the 4.2 d is very reliable

He currently has a tb42e. So a conversion seems to be on the cards
