Here is our 2013 ST-L Y62 that we picked up late last year and have slowly been adding stuff to it..as we do!! and has been labelled "the mafia staff car" by friends and I think it has sort of stuck.
It goes like a cut snake and is bloody comfy as well.

Here is a list of what has been done so far..

Opposite Lock 3 loop winch compatible (no winch) bullbar that has been colour coded.
Stedi 90W LED spotlights.
Hayman Reese towbar.
Firestone HP airbags in the rear. (will upgrade the suspension at some time)
Rear drawer system (made by me) with ORS fridge slide.
Dual battery system (mounted into drawer system) with redarc bcdc 1225 LV acting as the isolator and charger.
Bushranger Max air III compressor mounted beside battery with the outlet at the back of the fridge slide.
Redarc Towpro brake control unit, great unit too and blends nicely with the interior.
6B&S cable down to the back with a 50amp Anderson plug for charging the van.
Uniden 8080NB uhf with axis CH5T aerial.
Tinted windows.
Slimline weather shields.
Headlight protectors.
Deep dish rubber floor mats.
Nissan roof racks. (will have to see if my old rhino-rack roof basket will fit, apparently the heavy duty cross bars will bolt to the feet already there).

Ohhh..and a set of hand controls so I can drive the thing.....

On the wish list..
Rear bar

Long range tank
Suspension upgrade
Wheels and tyres

Here are a couple of pics (The first pic has the old set....stuff up by Nissan....of roof racks fitted, they have now been replaced with the proper set that I can fit a different length of crossbar to)

Well I have to say that's the best Y62 I've seen so far, the bull-bar certainly is an improvement. Makes it look like a different car.

Apollofish, cheers for the kind words, yep the bullbar does make a big difference when it is colour coded, it would have looked out of place with just the standard mat black that it came with. The best part is the missus picked the bar and said I want it painted to match, she also picked the vehicle colour as well as the spotties. I did give her a couple of choices for each though but only after I researched and picked the only ones I wanted...hehehehehehehe.
Hopefully with a suspension kit it will change even more, just waiting for the minister of war and finance to open the account.

Cheers

Greg

Cheers guys for the kind words. As for the hand controls, they are because I lost both legs in an accident back in 1999, left is above knee and right is just below the knee, I do have artificial legs but Qld transport say that I cannot use them to push the pedals (bloody spoil sports), they won't even let me use a pool cue........ But in all seriousness they do allow me to drive the vehicle in safety, although they do cost an arm and a leg (pun intended), I could have nearly bought a rear bar for the patrol for the price I paid, unfortunately that's the price we have to pay for medical aids and equipment.
As for asking about my disability, I have no issues with people asking at all (I wish more would ask!) and I will try to answer any question. The first question any of the blokes (my dad, brother, father in law etc etc) asked when they seen me in hospital was, so how is the old fella, still there, is it still working?? don't worry about me missing 2 vital parts of my ability to walk, nah just find out if the most important male bit is still ok... :animierte-smilies-f I also lost most of my dignity in hospital.....that happen when your balls are swollen that much from the trauma and a male nurse has to bandage them up (twice) to try to reduce the swelling as they were the size of a very large grapefruit, the first thing my missus said when I showed her was..you're not coming near me with that thing!! hahahaha. The swelling did go down and everything went back to normal.
As you can see I am very open minded about my disability, I have to be as I cannot change it.

Cheers

Good on you Greg. Sounds like your lucky to be here bud. So you will have an Auto box as per factory and a Brake paddle on the left thumb and an accelerator on the right thumb paddle on the wheel?

Just like riding a motorbike?

Hey guys thanks for the encouragement, greatly appreciated, I just try to do what I do and not let too much get in my way, even at 44yo I am still as stubborn as when I lost my legs, albeit I have had to slow down a tad, 2 shoulder reconstructions will do that do you..it has been a fun 2 years thats for sure, imagine pushing a wheelchair with one hand, like a duck with one leg...keep going around in bloody circles ;)........

MudRunner TD, yep it has the auto box but doesn't have any paddle shift or thumb controls, mine are just the old style push pull (reben) controls, these attach directly to the accelerator and brake pedals. I pull the lever to accelerate and push the same lever to brake, it is a pretty simple thing with a couple of heim joints, rods and plates but unfortunately there is only about 3 or 4 that can do it qld and under qld transport rules they are the only ones to fit these things, I am allowed to remove them, just not fit them.
The ones with the thumb control for the accelerator are approx $7000 (thats what I was told anyway), they are a really nice unit and made in Italy (I think) but that was just a little out of our price range...by a lot actually...

Congrats mate

Thanks mate, yeah have had a couple of patrols over the last few years, the last GU (2012) is now up for sale as the missus doesn't want to keep it as she has a little hyundai excel for work and much cheaper to run than either of these patrols, so one has to go and unfortunately it is the gu, it will be sad to see it go but hopefully whoever buys it will use it for what it is built for. I think it is a pretty decent price for what gear it has on it, but I suppose only time will tell!

mudnut, cheers for the welcome, yep the patrol is a sacred item around here too, this is our 3rd patrol (unless I can count the old GQ ute I used to drive for work many years ago, wasn't mine though!) and I just can't seem to break the leash from Nissan, I have tried too, wanted to get a 200 series a few years back but with a nearly 50K changeover they were promptly told to belt it where the sun don't shine, so we bought another GU instead and now with the Y62 down in price decided to grab one while they were cheap, but the GU has to go though unfortunately.

I pictured someone with one arm, trying to propel a wheelchair. The mongrels shoulda fitted a locker on it for you:) Seriously, I've owned a couple of Toyotas: a 4wd Corolla (ugly as hell but it climbed hills like a mountain goat) and we have a 95 spacia van with 450000 ks on the original block. They are good, but parts are way more expensive.

hey gregs you got a grapefruit when I had my first transplant I had a pineapple, that when I walked would sit at the back of my legs whilst everyone laughed at me cause it looked like I had a great big turd in my pants. worse still my old fella sunk inside said pineapple, and I had to squeeze him out to take a leak.

Greg what plans or trips have you lined up in the back of your mind.

threedogs, mate would really love to do the Tanami, Canning, Old Gunbarrel Highway, Anne Beadall and back up the Birdsville Track, we were going to do the Cape a few years ago but we went west and had a look at Lake Eyre when it had water in it instead, but no major trips planned as yet, just a couple of weekends away with friends and family, my left shoulder has started playing up after my op in June last year so I have to get it sorted before I can really start planning a big trip, really wish it wasn't so and hopefully it will only require a cortisone injection but that will be for the specialist to determine.

Stropp, yeah I had a similar experience with a female copper, when she pulled me up for speeding, she walked up and said all the usual crap....then asked if I wanted to step out and check the speed/radar unit in the cop car...I just put my left stump up onto the steering wheel and gave her a shake of the head to say no , she was a little taken back but regained her composure pretty quick and gave me a ticket...ah well.....you win some you lose some....

Cool the Cape is an eye opener and one I hope to do again in a couple of years,
I've had 17 back ops so not that mobil, bloody council just put speed humps in all the streets around us .
Damn I thought my back was getting a bit better but now I'm putting in a request for a suspension seat from Strato.
Already have the Strato 3000 with lumber pump but there are better seats out there I feel.
After all that its a bit limiting where I go,

Bloody hell....good idea about the suspension seat if it helps your back. Hope you get it sorted soon and can get back out there.

We will get up to the Cape one day, hopefully, but would like to take the missus out to see "the rock" first, I was out there with a group from the Outback Way group/council a few years ago and it was amazing to see, we travelled from Boulia to Laverton via the Plenty Hwy and Great Central Road.

back in 80 my mate was a ranger at the rock we got to camp right at the base of the rock,, as that was the rangers quarters back then,
all changed now. The day after I left Azaria Chamberlain went missing go figure. With my mate being a ranger we went where no body else could eg from the rock to the Olgas the "back way" straight through the scrub, awesome awesome awesome, we have the best country I believe. after that I went and lived in Alice for a while working on a "bush job' from Kulgera to Kingoona doing the retaining walls in the rail line, was then the first one piece track in the southern hemisphere.

That would have been an experience to camp at the bottom of the rock. I didn't walk around when we were there we just took pics from a distance, but if I can get the missus out there walking around it will certainly be on the cards, I won't be climbing it though...unless I can get a locker for the wheelchair ;)........

i was at the rock last year prior to the meetup in the middle, really cool to walk around and the height in some of the little canyons you can walk into is amazing, moreso when its raining as the water cascades off the rock. :)

It would be amazing to see with water running off it, hopefully in a year or 2 I can get the better half out there to see it, but she is keen to back to Fraser this year, I would rather go west and do the Birdsville, Oodnadatta and Simmo but that will have to wait. Have to put a suspension lift and some tyres on the mafia staff car first, and if I can get a rear bar through the firestorm that would be awesome but I think the fire might just be a bit hot :sterb032:

Just got a new set of boots for the MSC and they change the look of the patrol for the better I reckon (still have the originals and they will go on for the really long stints in between trips). A couple of the pics also show the Stedi LED driving lights.

Tyres are General Grabber SRL's LT275/70R18, these are a 10ply tyre with a load/speed index of 125Q, a load rating of E and a max load for each tyre of 1650kg.

Wheels are CSA Raptor (large caps) 18" x 8" with a 25pos offset (recommended by CSA) with a load rating of 1250kg (283-880P25-67A)

The wheels clear the front calipers nicely, the tyres don't touch anything when turning the wheel from lock to lock. The spare tyre had to be deflated quite a bit to get it to fit into the spare wheel well, but I do have an on-board compressor to pump it up if needed. Could have got away with the spare inflated but needed to space the tyre down about a centimetre or so, but that drops it down below the diff pumpkin and not really that keen on having it that low but will investigate it further if it becomes a pita having the spare deflated......

Haven't had a chance to get them dirty yet but the handle reasonably well in the wet. The roads where slightly greasy in places and while I can feel it understeer when pushing a little bit too hard through corners, it handled it all pretty well especially for a tyre that doesn't have any sipes.
In the dry they handle pretty bloody good for an aggressive all-terrain tyre, I can take off from a standing start fairly quickly and not light them up (foot to the floor stuff will see them light up). I feel pretty confident that these tyres will do the job I need them to do.

Yep, they do give off more road noise than the originals and to be perfectly honest probably less than the MT MTZ's I had on our GU, but nothing that is in anyway intrusive and if going by the stereo test I have to only turn it up one more notch to really drown out the extra road noise they give off, they really have done a pretty good job at reducing the 'howl' of these tyres. What they will be like with 50-60 thousand k's on them, who knows!

FYI General Tire are running a bit of a sale at the moment with the SRL's, I got ours for $395ea instead of $495ea.

The black plastic clips are for my wheelchair, just fold the back rest down and push the wheelchair into place, give it a little shove so the foot plate locks into the clips and pull the bungy cord over to a support under my wheelchair and clip it on and the wheelchair is locked into place, takes about 5 seconds once the wheelchair is sitting on the deck.

The standard muffler was replaced with the one in the pic, it is a high flow sports one and now sounds as it should.

Cheers guys. The next thing on the list is the suspension upgrade, but not for a while. ARB, Tough Dog, Dobinsons, Ironman all do kits for these things but they are pretty standard kits (apart from tough dogs adjustable shocks), so I was waiting for ARB to do a BP51 kit but it doesn't seem like they want to do one and if they do it will probably be years away, I understand their thinking but if they don't get a BP51 kit out soon, I think they will lose out as people won't spend money on one kit then a year later go to an ARB kit. The UAE have had this vehicle for quite a few years so would have thought they would have tried to target this market like Tough Dog have. One of the chief designers of the BP51 kit actually drives a Y62 so we can only hope I suppose but who knows the way they think, they can be a funny bunch at times!!!

A couple of pics....it just had a bath.

The Rhino roof basket (AT2012-2080mm x 1295mm) and 1500mm crossbars came off our old GU, just needed to change over the feet and it bolted up nice and easy, the shovel holder is from pro rack and does an ok job of holding the shovel in place. The box in the pic is also from our GU (I made it for a trip many years ago), it is held in with 4 turnbuckles so isn't going anywhere.

The rear end certainly doesn't help it in the looks dept but with a bit of bar work and a change of wheels and tyres the focus is taken off the back end....to a point!! I took some pics of the rear along with the other pics above but it still looks like it needs a rear bar to get the focus off the wide/squat stance it has and a suspension lift to get the a r se end off the deck, it will happen just not sure when..

Well knock me down with a feather, I cannot believe it has been so long since I have updated this thread, my apologies....anyway I suppose it is high time I got off my arse and did exactly that....there has been a couple of changes to the MSC over the past little while, notably I finally got a suspension upgrade, I was waiting on the BP-51's but in the end they took way too long to get a set out so I went the way of Kings, they are the smoothies with adjustable remote reservoirs. I have also just fitted a snorkel (TJM Airtec), well I helped my mate (he fits these things for a living) and I was just his lackey, it took a bit as it was his first Y62 but we got there in the end, looks ok too, well as far as snorkel's go. I have also done a few mods inside as well, fitted a Ram mount for my tablet and mounted my two-way hand piece cradles to it, also made a false floor for the second row seats, it can have 2 of my old GU rear seat boxes bolted to it, as well as a 69L water tank (if required). I have also fitted a pie oven, this has been probably the best mod so far, and has seen a few pies and sausage rolls get heated up in it. Another mod was the rear drawer handle, the 2 small catches (1 on each runner) was not working out so after a talk with a mate he came up with the idea of putting something between the 2 catches and using that to unlock and pull out the drawer, a bit simple but it works a treat.
