I as some of you may have heard Netflix is now in Australia.
So wife has done some digging and they have no contracts. Just pay upfront for the month and your set.
But they are running a free trial first month.
We're giving it a go. With unlimited download we will trial it.
$9 a month for standard definition its a dam site cheaper than fox or Austar. And it's on demand. You choose what you want to watch.
Down fall is you still miss all the afl, super cars etc.

I could be wrong, but I think the long term idea is that free to air will continue to get worst content until the majority of the country is on cable, as is in the US. I also will miss the supercars, NASCA and many other sporting events.
television - so many channels - so little content!

I've got a shitty connection Toddo and it streams really good mate. There are probably 20000 shows you get for bugger all a month.
Changing your DNS to US should give you US netflix with even more content....I think the;re cracking down on that these days

Well I have my own DNS redirect but you could use dns4me which costs money but there are other free ones about.
Then you sign up to Netflix in Brazil and as my credit card doesn't charge a fee for international purchases the exchange rate equals about $7 a month
You can then use your netflix account in Australia, Brazil, america etc. Using dns4me you just switch it to whatever country you want at the time.
Mine is setup differently but is way way more complex. The above is the easy method
I use my android phone or tablet Netflix app casted to my Chromecast connected to my TV.
Works a treat

Not a biggee for most but if you have smallish Internet Plans... just be aware that if you use dns spoofing and are with an ISP who doesn't meter Netflix downloads then the metering cannot recognise Netflix to the dodgy dns so it counts on your internet useage.
If you have a large data plan it doesn't matter at all really

We only have adsl and is streaming well it seems from the wife.
The free trial is only low definition so possible more issues with the higher def.
We ditched pay tv ages ago.
Long story short at the end of it all they offered me $100 package for $13 a month.
I questioned if they were going to pay me next lol.
Netflix is no adds aswell.
Free to air is struggling, I don't think Netflix will replace free to air like Austar and Foxtel want to.
But they have to stop being greedy. Charging a but load and smashing adds aswell. I don't pay for adds.
Anyway. Wife has it via laptop atm threw a hdmi cable to tv, but we did discuss the chrome cast dongle to allow any device to stream to the tv.
Lucas, can you stream games from your device over the chrome cast??

You can cast your screen but it is a little slow. Not really what its meant for, its pretty much meant to pull feeds off the internet that you tell it to. ie youtube

I have had it for a while now, I use unblockus as my DNS. Works pretty well, I have the hd package and sheet Internet and it only occasionally stops.
Netflix is great, my olds have foxtel and Netflix and only use foxtel for sports. Anything else is Netflix. The only crap thing is that if you want to watch a current TV show, it will only come on Netflix once the season is finished. Annoying but there's so much other stuff to watch there's always something good

Its not legal to redirect it. They have been talking about it on triple j's Hack program. (don't get me wrong, I couldn't care less if it is or not, just putting it out there).
One thing that people are hoping will happen is the addition of new Australian content as All other countries that net flix have entered have ended up getting country of origin content which is good for the local community but there are no plans for this in Australia yet. It appears that netflix are having a trial run first with no aussie content and very limited new content, the majority will be from their back catalogue

True. I barely have time to watch anything.
But the wife likes the occasional quiet time and I guess instead of watching a downloaded new movie on a Saturday night we'll now be legal.
It's not for all. Granted.
But hopefully it curves a bit of the piracy and gives fox and Austar a wake up call.

Fox bought 100% of Austar a few years ago... sucked big time as I had to sell all my employee shares I was sitting on for a rainy day.
It will cost Foxtel a reasonable amount of customers I spose but Netflix doesn't carry very much of what I watch anyway (House of Cards aside) but each company has their flagship programs so they'll both have their subscribers and make their money.
In Foxtels case maybe not as much profit but if Netflix does have an impact on Piracy that will help Foxtel and the other providers/streamers as well so who knows what the bottom line will be but agree it should be good for the subscriber.

Yea absolutely. Netflix doesn't have sport. So many will stay with Foxtel. Didn't know about the take over.
But by the looks of it it sounds like Telstra and fox are in bed with each other.
I think Telstra have metered Netflix due to having unmetered fox sports etc.

Telstra and Foxtel have a very incestuous relationship... pretty much on the same level as Jamie and Cersei lannister actually.
Foxtel is available on Telstra Tbox internet streaming for example and as mentioned some Foxtel is unmetered on Bigpond sama sama the Netflix Optus & Netflix iinet agreements.
Austar was in the sack with Optus early for bundled services but after a couple of years began sleeping around (tarts that we were).

So what is the difference when back in the old days (20 years) you had a calling card and would dial a local number to access an overseas service to make calls to the host country or other country's? (VPN->Server->Service (USA Netflix) ? ;) You were using the local telephone provider to dial into the access line.

One vendor blaming the other is an old chestnut. Was with iiNet many moons ago but their support for issues was appalling. Moved to internode for many years and surprise surprise, since being bought by iiNet, great customer support went out the door again (they were really great up til then). Nowadays with Telstra on a cable plan which has been worry free, albeit it I miss all the unmetered goodies internode had.
My experience has been that in the main ISP's will always blame the other guy first off.
