Seems someone tried to hack my account here, just received this email:

Dear Rickie3,

Someone has tried to log into your account on NissanPatrol.com.au Forum with an
incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to
login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 183.228.111.63

All the best,
NissanPatrol.com.au Forum
Admin can you run the IP to see if it was another member or if it was a bot please, Ive since updated my password, just lucky my original password was a very strong one, I probably suggest other members who have had this attemp update their passwords as well.
Regards
Rick

Thanks mate, yeah we have been inundated with this lately from various ip addresses mainly china and Russia.

I have been banning IP addresses every night but its a waste of time.

It's most likely bots and for those who don't understand, the email is from us advising you, the member that someone has tried too many times which puts a 15 minute ban on your account.

This stops the bot for that username for a bit.

I don't want to ban Russia as we have a lot of members and lurkers who use the forum over there but I think ill block out china altogether at this rate.

Although that won't entirely help the situation either.

Ill do some more research on stopping this so apologise for this folks.

Rest assured the emails are real, not spam so just reply to them advising me so I can make sense of it all and find a solution.

One thing you all could do would be to have a decent password comprising of minimum 2 words, numbers, upper and lowercases and symbols.

Even slang words misspelt words etc is very beneficial, not just for this forum but all your Internet passwords.

Ill sort out folks.

It's cool AB, we understand.

Blocking Chinese IP's is a good idea actually

No need to apologize AB this isnt your fault mate, you do a fantastic job, I know myself the stress involved in running a site and keeping things up to date, and I know these bots/hackers are getting worse by the year, but a big thank you for taking the time to respond to my post :)

But for a hacker that's a lot of extra effort

Agreed which is why they are 99 times out of 100 'bots trying to get in for spamming.

The manuals are freely available on the the WWW other than here so they would have to be a numpty of a hacker if that was the reason
