View Full Version : GU ZD30 Boost controller install.. has this been done correctly?

I had my gu zd30 04', fitted with a HPD boost controller, EGR blocked, Boost gauge and EGT gauge, Oil catch can..
After a week it developed a weird lumpy/rough idle intermittently, more so when warm.
Since then back to the mechanic.. who thought it may be injectors. (Car has done only 105,000km). I initally though could it be my DMF? As this rough idle started off as only when I pulled up to lights..
Now that has ceased. But the rough/lumpy miss like idle comes and goes.
My mechanic just mentioned that he replaced a line coming off the maf sensor?? which had a airflow restrictor valve on it?? and thought that could be the cause?? We will put it back on, on monday.
It then made me question.. is this setup right?
So I thought I'd put up some pictures to make sure it is right and if anyone has another idea.. Car was running spot on before, NO issues.

Any thoughts is appreciated,

Hi mate . First time i have ever seen or heard about a HPD boost controller. Went and quickly checked the other forum and comments were not good , basically toss it and get a dawes( there words not mine ) like the majority run here, myself included . tried and tested . In saying that I would be checking your Maf first for your idle/miss issues first . Clean MAF and let dry then check voltage

The maf sensor doesn't have a line coming off it. It's an electrical part. So it won't have any air flow. Apart from inside the maf housing it will. As for you pics, it's too hard to tell if you have it installed right. Maybe if I look on my pc rather than the tablet I might see more.

O.k now that I can see the pics. It looks incorrect. The line that comes from the vacuum pump to the controller, needs to go via the factory solenoid ( the end port of the three), then to the controller. Because you are not running a needle valve with the HPD controller, the factory solenoid still has to control part of the process. Just eliminating it won't work correctly.
Hope I explained it right....
Get a pic up of this part your mechanic replaced/ removed too. Its got me stumped.

Boots - You know I was going to source the gear for the dawes valve and needle off mudski, was very confusing working out what parts I needed (I'm a A&E Nurse by trade).. So I just told my fitter what I wanted. He said he could source the same european made gear. Nek minnut I pick my care up with a HPD controller..In his words 'it does the same thing' and I did say well It does not let me control my spool up rate does it.. Anyway.. I will do the MAF clean at some stage. I just had a feeling looking at other bonnets it looks incorrectly setup..
Which brings me to you mudski;
Hope I didn't offend you not buying your gear. You were fantastic with trying to help me but as you had to go away. I was an inpatient little bast@r! and took his word of mouth to source me one.
The vacuum pump is the last photo correct? There are no lines going to that, to the controller at all.. I think I need a diagram..(lol)

The HPD "controller" is a Dawes valve, just a different shape. I have one and it works great on my car. I can't see how it would affect the idle though as you are not really running any boost at that point. If it was faulty it would be noticed at higher revs. Needle valve also won't affect idle. If you want to slow the spool up rate and play around with it just plumb it in before the HPD controller.
Mine is set up just like yours with the solenoid totally bypassed. If you blocked the EGR then no need for the solenoid, especially if you are going to run the needle valve from Mudski. Solenoid controls the boost rate + bleeds fresh air from airbox into the system so it can drop the boost when EGR opens. Most people will say don't bypass the solenoid but I have tried a few different configurations and the way it is now works well. Get down to Bursons/Repco etc and buy a meter of 4mm vacuum hose and you can plumb the HPD, needle valve and solenoid in any configuration you like and see which one works best with your motor. It might fix the idle problem but it might not.

Hmm!
So I remain stumped then..!

Rock Trol makes some good points there...
Just for the sake of it. Run the hose from the vacuum pump to the last port on the solenoid, and then the middle port on the solenoid to the valve. The vacuum pump is on the right side of the motor, but just follow the hose from the valve (not the hose with the green dampener) back. This leads you to the pump. So just take this hose off the valve and put it on the solenoid, and then tun another hose from the middle port on the solenoid to the port on the valve where you took the hose off.
Your issue may be totally unrelated and its just a coincidence....

Rock Trol,
My Question is, do you have a needle valve with yours too though.?? with the same plumbing

I had mine done by turbo engineering changed actuator

How much did Ray charge you for that? He doesn't let the car leave the workshop for anything under $1000..... Beside the OP is in rAdelaide. a bit far for him i think. lol
