Hey guys,
Hoping to get some opinions... 93 GQ manual rb30...
Noticed a growling rumble noise from the front end, at around 80-100km/h, but only when my free wheeling hubs are locked in (car in 2wd). With the hubs unlocked there is no noise, and with them locked the noise isn't noticeable until high speeds. Is this normal? I don't usually drive with them locked on the road (and don't do those speeds in 4x4), but wheels were chockers with mud and I couldn't switch them back until I got to a car wash.
Is this normal, and if not, any suggestions?

Ok, awesome. I'd assume if it was low on diff oil or something it'd make the noise at lower speeds as well?

Did you drive on the road with hubs locked and in 4WD??
If its hard to disengage reverse for 50 metres or so to "UNwind" it
Check fluids anyway and/or change with fresh oil

Yeah a lot of people say they can hear it.
I cannot notice a difference between driving with the hubs in or out.

My front end components grumble a bit when I lock the hubs in to lube everything up once a month as recommended in the owners manual. If you are getting abnormal vibrations bad clunking or metal on metal noises, then it would be time to worry.

If you have a bit of history with bog holes and water crossings
I'd be changing the oil or at least checking the colour to see if any water
has been able to get in over the years

Thanks guys. I don't do a heap of water/bog work but will have a look anyway. No abnormal clunks or anything, just general whirring hah

It doesn't hurt to give the uni joints a squirt of grease now and then too.

jack the front wheels up and grab hold of the wheel and give it a shake, i bet on the wheel bearings.

Wouldn't the wheel bearings make the noise all the time?

Yes but when you are in 4wd they are working so a very good possibility the bearings are noisy or may just need adjusting but simple to check , jack it up grab top and bottom of the wheel and push pull, if it moves get em checked.

It will be front driveshaft vibration.
Grease the unis.
How lifted is your vehicle?

Yeah, it's on the list now, greasing everything.
It's lifted 3 inches.
