Team,
I am in the process of installing a 2* caster bush kit, to do so I have disconnected the drag link and tie rod ends from each hub as well as I also wanted to check the upper and lower 'king pin' bearings etc, now that both hubs are free to swing full left lock and full right lock by hand, I notice that from the straight ahead possition, you can fairly easily swing the disc/hub etc fully through the arc lock to lock as such however to do this from the straight on possition, you have to overcome some slight resistance either way to do so, once you overcome this the hub swings freely without bind, as you swing it back toward straight ahead it kind off snaps back into the stright possition like a detent as such, is this normal or should it be smooth and the same effort right through lock to lock????? am what I am feeling worn bearings where they have worn a work area in the race etc????? there is no loosness at all either.

G'day Crash mine did the same thing, one of the swivel hub bearings was damaged like a dent from the bearing sitting in the one spot and being hammered. Time to replace the swivel hub bearings mate. They should swing with even resistance.

Thanks Sherro, I know the axles should come out to do this job but can the bearing be pulled out with a slide hammer type of deal?? the hubs are not leaking so I'd rather not go into them if possible, its a 99 GU coil ute, 460K,

Give it a go mate i can't quit remember if you can get the cones through the swivel hub. My gq had a seal under the cone. When i did mine i did the whole lot bearings and seals.

Mudrunner, thanks for the link, that is awesome.
I know there has been a lot of talk of camber correction bearings to stop the car pulling to the left, my ute does pull a little, but having said that and above, its done 450+K with nothing ever being replaced as far as I know, my preference is to just simply put std parts back in and possibly the pulling and slight wheel shake at 85 is just due to old parts and the need for a 2* caster corection kit. Thoughs????

Hi Greg, for those kms I would do a full swivel hub. Rebuild as per the link mate, you will not believe how the car feels when. Your done mate!! Will transform the car!

Thanks mate, yep about to order a full kit to do so, I did the caster bushes yesterday so while she is up on stands I'll do the rest, just have to order a kit now. Those camber correction swivel bearing kits, are they a patch job or will I also need that one set for the left side. Or once I put a full kit though it it will stop pulling to the left slightly?

I have the camber correction kit from Safe-at-Steer fitted to the left side of my GUIV and rate it. Now is a good time to fit the kit if you think you need it.

The kit has an offset upper race. So you can set it at anything from zero to 2

I recently rebuilt my front diff and what I noticed is the actual swivel seals are what gives it that funny notchiness feel when moving the steering by hand. Without those seals, it's all good, nice and smooth.
But with that said, bearings that are due for replacement shouldn't be ignored.

Ok, got the better of me today, both hubs are off the car and fully dissasembled. the swivel bearing cones on both sides are stuffed for sure. so its it full kit rebuild. On the kits, does anyone do a complete kit that also has the upper and lower swivel bearing greas caps as well or do I have to buy them seperately? is there a kit to stay away from in regard to quality.

I used the Terrain Tamer kit in mine. It was a bit more expensive than a couple of the others......was it worth it.....? I guess I'll find out over time.
It didn't come with the grease caps either. Mine were re-used when we put it back together. I tell you what though, my old Q drives like a different vehicle after the kingpin bearing change.
Drives awesome now.

Hey, those swivel bearing greas cups/caps, do they go in concave in or concave out!!! I want to say concave out to clear the cv joint but cant remember!!

Yes concave. But flat is fine if that is what is left. If you have them fit them, if you don't forget about them. Don't by new ones.
