Hi. I have a 1991 Safari TD42. When the transmission oil is cold occasionally the transfer box 'whirs' as though a two splined shafts are touching but not engaging properly. Then is seems like they engage partially, the transmission loads up and then disengages with a bang sending a shock through the transmission. If, when I hear the noise, I engage the 4WD lever (ie into high range 4WD) and then imediatiely disengage, the noise goes away and there is no shock through the system. It only happens at low speeds.
Can anyone who knows about the inside of the transfer box through any light on what the cause and remedy may be? Unfortunately I do not have a workshop manual so do not know the interior layout.
Thanks.
