Hi all,

I have a DI 3ltr with 3" exhaust, Dawes valve, egr blocked and a rapid chip installed. When I fitted the egt gauge and boost gauge I found the egt was hitting the 650 mark if I floored it and was running 14psi boost. I have upped the boost to 16psi and this helped but when towing my caravan I can easily do the same. I don't know anything about the chip and can't find any adjustments on it. Should I adjust the boost to 18psi or would I need to get it dyno'd? I'm going to the Kimberly in May and want it sorted before I head off😀

Cheers
Brad

Where is the EGT probe located, it may be too close to the Turbo.
Do you have a needle valve fitted ???
are you blowing more black smoke than normal??
Ideally you need around 10psi at 100 kph or 2000 rpm

Egt would be 2~3 in back from the turbo and no needle valve. Runs about 12psi from memory at 100kmph. It's only up hills or if I hold it flat at the higher end of rev range it gets hot readings. Wouldn't say it blows exsesive black smoke either.

if you have an auto ,do what I do and click the OD off raising the revs and lowering the egts
so the probe is easily visible from the engine bay??

Got a manual mate. If I back the loud peddel off it drops but just a little worried when I go bush in say boggy areas where I can't back off. What is the maximum boost I can run?

some here run 30psi mine is about 28psi Mullet hunter has 26psi all with no problems.
Increase your boost a little at a time and see what happens, Disconnect the battery too, to erase
any memory, Others here struggle to get 15psi without going into over boost mode.
each is different, see how you go

EDIT might need a needle valve fitted to control your spool up rate.
Mudski will be along soon to explain a bit better

What should my pyro read after the turbo

Was seeing 650 when towing. Removed head and found glow plug melted would that be the cause

What engine and what mods?

No, and, 650 out of the box is normal for some Patrols when towing

The Rapid chip can be adjusted/tuned but needs to be done via a control unit that plugs into it. The dealers of these units have these control units. I know that MTQ in Adelaide sell Rapid as does 4WD Systems (http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=87) so maybe take the car there for a tune up if you are worried.

I screwed the boost up to a little over 18psi. Goes well temps dropped but running 17psi at 100kmh and seems to be using more fuel. Would a needle valve drop the boost when cruising at 100? Also at that high boost I am now getting boost spikes when I didn't before hand
Cheers

I take it your egt reading is in Celsius? If so thats right on the top end. Even way too past for my liking.
Using a needle valve will enable you to control spool up and therefore reduce your boost spikes and you can also set the mid range or 100kph boost levels. The dawes is only there to serve as a boost limiter and nothing else. The needle valve is used for the performance side and fine tuning. Giving you total control, not just half for you and half for the ECU.
I'd run without the chip, tune it up and see what your egts are like. Then put the chip in and compare it. It could be just the chip causing the high egts.
I run in 25psi max and 18psi at 100ks. When fully loaded and towing my 1.4t camper my egts never go over 400c. It will usually sits around the low 300s. I get to a hill and I put the foot down it will usually go to around 380c. Give or take.

Thanks for the info Mudski, I will order the needle valve off you and fit it and have a play when I get back home from work in a couple of weeks.
What fuel economy do you get running higher boost pressures?

Fuel what? Don't know mate:) I drive mine like I stole it half the time. So I assume it wouldn't be great. Lol. Thats something I have never bothered with.

Lol normally I'm the same but running across the Tanami I don't wish to run out of fuel out there 😳 so I need to be a little careful.

The only time i did take notice was we travelled fully loaded with a 1.4T camper in tow. We got from Melbourne to Eden, southern NSW coast, just accross the border, on 75ltrs. According to Whereis, its 569k's. Thats the only time I took notice.

Depending on how you drive and what the terrain I would think 14-15 lt/100ks would be ballpark
CRD are a tad thirstier but not by much

That's around 13l/100km, that's awsome pulling a camper Mudski. Best I get is 12/100 with the roof rack on.

Yer I was thinking around the 16/100 mark with my van in tow. I was getting that a while back but just not sure about that if I run the boost levels higher to keep the EGT down

I was using a blend of Castrol 2T oil in the fuel too back then. I reckon this may have helped the usage a little.

I think I've had too much of a blend tonight lol 😜 living the dream👍

As the evil twin said mate, CRD's can easily reach 650 of the factory floor. I think I could have pushed mine to it, without even towing anything, before all the mods .
