We would have had to leave at 7am and it's only 2 hours to home so just drove home. Great trip!

Deep Creek 4 is in my top 3 hardest tracks, Deep Creek 1 is the coolest track I've done. We liked it so much we did it twice.

Not quite as hard as brewery, not as technical but just as steep with some big steps.

We also did trig track which was a lot of fun! Except for Steve who drove the fire truck with no power steering.

I got in about half an hour ago. Great weekend, really worth the drive across. Actually, I think I could say it was awesome. :)

Really appreciate all the effort and hospitality shown by the whole group. None of you knew me, but I felt welcome and comfortable and I no longer even drive a Patrol! Pity Lucus couldn't stay for a drive, but was still good to catch up. Special thanks to Rossco for co-ordinating and getting it off the ground and for him and Winnie for choosing some great tracks. We had great weather, I think in the wet it would be a pretty scaring place.

We had a big day yesterday (Saturday). With the morning and afternoon runs we did almost 150km. Was too busy driving, so didn't take many photos either. I have a few and will check them in a bit. Hopefully there will be a couple worth posting and one or two vids for deep creek.
Have to sneak in how well the Jack did. Front Elocker is awesome. I could quit work and drive around up there forever, except I'd have no way to pay the bills. :)

Roofy, it was sad to see what happened, but I was so impressed with the attitude from both you and Jane. Very good example to the younger blokes (me included!). Still hoping it works out well going forward. Would have to agree with Rossco on the shocks. It makes so much sense, seeing how much it bounced.

Thanks Winnie to you for leading yesterday. Have to give Amy some praise too. I was amused to see her get out several different times with such a great smile after you'd pretty much just driven up or down some cliff, giving it "full berries". Great that you can enjoy those things together. When are you gonna get her Patrol? lol

Here are a few videos. Mostly just ordinary quality windscreen vids from my phone. I've tried to trim a heap out of them as they were a bit too long and boring. Probably still a bit too long and boring, but gives you a bit of an idea.

Going from the track sign down to the crossing for Deep Creek No.1 Track.

http://youtu.be/j8bkExOwvw0

Going through the crossing and climbing out for Deep Creek No.1 Track. The crossing itself was pretty cool. We drove along the creek bed for quite a distance, almost like driving through a small tunnel. There was a bit of a step out of the creek, but you can't see it on the video. There were rocks already built up by someone else to drive up it. The track up was very steep, but has just opened after maintenance, so was straight forward.

http://youtu.be/xVyWie2FA3Y

I debated if I would publish this one. The trucks are a fair way off in the distance, but you can kind of make them out. The scream from Winnie on the radio, after making it up, was cool so I decided I would put it up. :) As usual, you can never get a feel for how steep it really was from the video. Winnie was first and you only see a bit of him as a dot in the distance, but the scrambling and dust gives you an idea of what was going on.

http://youtu.be/-2zkp3PG6-k

This is the close up view of my drive up. Right at the end, you can't quite tell on my video, my right front wheel rode a mound and my left front took some very high air and then I dropped significantly. On the video Winnie had it looked kind of cool.

http://youtu.be/0_FUrRvdzd4

The Little Red Firetruck. What a beast. :) Glad it wasn't me, as there was no power steering. Steve took a rest in the afternoon. Ha Ha.
This was doing the switchback section on Trig Track. I think there was more than 10 of them.

http://youtu.be/iFwvKesqOqc

Finally a quick view from the switchbacks on Trig Track, looking back where we had come across from the other side and back to the switchbacks themselves.

Yeah, we did about 10 hours of driving on Saturday and looked at only one part of a speck of it. There were heaps more tracks in that area that we never went near and it is just one tiny bit.

You are also not wrong TD about the beauty of it. This was my first visit and it was awesome. We were also just doing some fairly focused driving, but there must be so much history about the area. Would love to do some drives visiting and investigating some of the history up there. Need more time. :) Back to reality now, stop dreaming about 4wding the rest of my life and go to bed so I can go to work tomorrow!

How many of the jerries you end up using ?

Fuel was interesting. I was well under 1/4 on gauge on Sunday morning so poured two jerries in. We didn't end up doing any more tracks. Got back to Moe and worked out I might have just made it.

Avg from Moe, offroad and back to Moe was about 27 l/100km. So the offroad bit was probably up close to 30 l/100km. If doing a longer trip in the area that's what I will estimate as my requirement. Much of the day was 3-4000 rpm, either working hard up hill or engine braking down hill.

From Moe back to Ballarat on the freeway was 14.5 l/100km and that was sticking to the limit but pushing it hard up the hills.

Winnie

I used 20L/100km from Trafalgar and back to Trafalgar.

Seeing how easy Rossco and Cameron climbed that hill, makes me want a locker even more!

Yeah good vids, was going to do a vid of the creek section holding the phone, but would have been a bit all over the place i think! ! . . . The jack makes it look very smooth, don't think the fire truck would have been quote that smooth! ! Good pics too, shouldn't be to disappointed, was hard to try and take the time to get a snap. Good someone got some of the camp i did have good inventions. . .

It was pretty go go driving which was good but would be good to do a bit of exploring, there's heaps of historical stuff mines etc. Amazing to imagine what that whole area would have been like in the heyday. People, mining activity buildings, pubs everywhere and probably little trees left on the hills. Would have been pretty cool however it's refreshing to know some areas return back to bush and their former beauty in this day and age of development and destruction.

And yes i think i am very sold on lockers:) one of the biggest improvement you can make as far as capability goes.

Winnie
31st March 2015, 11:30 AM
Just the way you guys crawled that hill rather than smashing up it like I had to, it was awesome!
They have put a lot of work into the area to showcase the historical sights, created walking tracks and signposted them all. You would have noticed heaps of sign posts with "historical sight" on them, one trip me and a few mates did we stopped at as many as we could but it would take you over a week to see them all.
So much history out there and like you said, would have been great to see it all.

Rossco

Yeah i should of crawled up a bit slower rather than trying to fly up in low 2nd. . . Bit silly really, but once crawling up in first there was absolutely no shortage of traction despite the steepness and rocky ledges.

Reckon you could spend a week just in the walhalla aberfeldy area exploring. We're pretty lucky to have the high country there's alot packed in there, literally a lifetime of exploring.

I thought our trip was great and really, I was far more focused on the 4wding than the history. But now that I saw some of the area it would be great to go back and do a more history than 4wd focused trip (or go for a week and do a bit of both :) ) Work is a pain, it gets in the way of all sorts of unrealistic dreams. Ha Ha.

Good videos Cameron, I will upload the videos I took from the top of that hill.
Seeing how easy Rossco and Cameron climbed that hill, makes me want a locker even more!

I thought you had a locker, or is it next on the list when $$$ allow.
As you noticed a lot less taxing on the patrol

I have never had a locker, it is on the list along with a rebuilt fuel pump, spending money on the trailer and 10 million other things.

It's time to let the cat out of the bag... I am posting this with Roofy's permission.

We had just driven Deep Creek 1 twice and headed into Deep Creek 4. We came across one huge, steep, rocky hill. It looked insane!
I was first up and got hung up in one spot, hit it with a little more speed and scrambled my way to the top.
Rossco was next and with both lockers in, made it look way too easy.
Then was Roofy's turn to try out his new locker. In true Roofy fashion, it was balls to the wall and he came flying up! But the front of the car started to bounce a little bit too much and before we knew it he had gone head first into a tree! Oh crap! He backs up for another go and comes flying up the hill again!
When he gets to the top he jumps out and says, "well the locker worked!!!"

We limped Roofy back to O'tooles as we were about 45mins away from camp and it was getting dark, Jane was back at camp and Roofy had the swags and all the food in the car!
Amy and I were first into camp and Jane knew that something had happened. It was dark at this stage and as Roofy rolls into camp Jane says "OH NO he's smashed a headlight!!" Ummm it's a little more than that Jane-o!!

All I can say is thank god Roofy did not panic, and kept driving because if he hadn't, there is no doubt he would have gone rolling backwards.

Fortunately it was not as bad as it looked (still not good) and insurance has approved for it to be repaired... good outcome to a shitty situation.

Had a smashing time yesterday

Ah yes, we sure did!!

Seriously tho, very glad to hear that that repairs have been approved, she will be back in action better than ever in no time. However the most important thing is that everyone is OK. It was pretty scary to watch from the top, it even looks steep in the video, so that's saying something. It's easy to get complacent, but it's a good reality check to make you realise just how quickly things can turn ugly. However it's how you react and Roofy did a very good job to stay composed and keep going with the climb in a calm manner, despite the bonnet being folded up towards the bonnet and nasty noises of the fan hitting the cowling. On that hill there is only small margin for error and rolling back or getting crossed up would have resulted in a very bad rollover, it has happened before on that hill.

After a bit of discussion after it happened and also looking at the video, we thought that worn / too soft shock absorbers is probably a very large contributing factor. It certainly looked like there was a lack of dampening control / a lot of bouncing.

Sunday morning we had a fair crack of bush panel beating, courtesy of the highmount and got it looking pretty reasonable really. I was quite amazed, we got the bar back to pretty much perfect!! I think Kat has some photos.

Anyway very happy that the old bus will be back in action and everyone is O.K.

if it happens don't panic just steer it out if possible

To be honest, I was really impressed with Roofy's response to it all. He didn't panic in the middle of the situation and then after, given what just happened was reasonably matter of fact about it. You know, kind of well it's happened now, let's get on with what has to happen next. I'm sure he was upset, but I reckon he set a very good example to all of us on how to respond. Same goes for Jane. Obviously it was a bit of a shock for her to see it, but she too did a good job with what she said and how she responded. Was my first time to meet Roofy properly on the weekend (saw him at the ARB tour, but never really talked), but come away knowing that he's "fair dinkum".

Good stuff Roofy, really glad they are gonna get it all up on the go for you. Won't be long and you can stop dragging your bum on the ground in the Pulsar. :)

cgm
14th April 2015, 12:30 AM
Now that's all out in the open, let me at least encourage Roofy that it could have been a lot worse. By chance I was back on that same hill the next weekend (over Easter). As we were coming down into the creek from the other side we could see a bit of smoking going up, that gradually turned to very dark/black smoke. Even though could not see the detail, could kind of tell what was happening. Off in the distance a bit of other car movement.

It took us a bit of time to end up getting up the hill. My mate had to winch as his back slid into the ruts just as the front was lifting and set him a bit side on (about 45 degrees), but he was further down and didn't cause any issues. Just took us a while (and me nearly having a heart attack climbing the track to set up the straps :) ) Then I also was a bit too cocky from a good run at it the weekend before and let my revs drop and stalled it on the first crest. Made a nice smoking/smell to get high on with the clutch before having to drop back off the ledge a bit and get another run at it. It certainly is a "nice" hill.

Anyway, after all that, not far past that climb we eventually got to this (still smouldering, but no one around):

Thought about calling the cops at the time, but didn't have reception. Didn't think about it later. Doesn't mean it wasn't, but I still doubt it was dumped though, as there would have been much easier places to dump it.

From those that did this trip earlier this year or have camped at o'tooles before - are there any special spots to camp? I've read that its similar to Talbotville; big grass open plains with plenty of opening camping areas?

Winnie

Yeah it's similar to Talbotville but smaller. I always camp at the far right because there is good river access and a big swimming hole, but there is not much sun on that side during the day. In the middle gets the most sun.
