You will need to be very choosey on what wiring and guages you put anywhere near a compass or did you mean you have a really BIG compass that will need teh space of 3 to 4 gauges?

why don't you get a HUD compass, that way you won't need a pod

I know you said you didn't want links but I've never been one to pay much attention to what's been said, so here is a google search of nissan patrol pillar pod images.

and if you just do something crazy, you get a whole plethora of pods

This one is obviously for left hand drive but hey, why not, you can never have too many gauges and things hey.

I have a silva compass on top of the dash, but found some marine in dash ones from the states that look
exactely like a 52mm gauge, centre top the batteries dont affect the compass,
It only moves if you place the compass near the A pillars, where the batteries are.

But what ET is saying is that being a compass is such a very sensitive piece of equipment, any electricity running through a cable nearby emits EMF which could disturb it.

What about this one for a gq? Well made and looks good.
It's not for a GU and I dunno how you'd go fitting that compass but for anybody else interested.

A compass?
That's one of them doovers the First Fleet used so they could have a 50/50 chance of hitting Australia.
Then 40 years ago the Yanks came along with that GPS thing and that sorted that out

Pfft... Cape York, Cape Byron, a Cape is a Cape isn't it?
Compasses don't work here in WA anyway.
Doesn't matter where you are they all point at the Pilbara

I cannot see the compass from my side, but its a small crappy one anyway
originally I had this - temp / compass / time, as SWMBO kept annoying me wanting to know the time - as you can see, I have the dash pod on top of the dash - meh...... still havent decided to move the radio & UHF into yet....

then I got the Left Hand Pillar pod and put a clock in that for her, and the compass..... but its crappy

on my side, I have the 3 pod one with the Autron Gauges

Thanks BC think Ill go the LHS pillar pod route, the LED clock in the dash is crapola IMO,
so I bought a 52mm white face job, just waiting on some more info from the Ritches compass
PPL.
Bit restricted on top of the dash on how to run the wires.

Hey TD, I made my own center consoles (roof and floor) and fitted a compass out of an aircraft I used to fly. Start and house battery volyages either side actuated by a toggle switch. Doesn't restrict view from drivers side, yet easy to read. Added a pic of my pillar pod (2 x gauge) but both are duel gauges so i have oil temp/pressure and EGT/Boost.
You could modify an overhead console if you don't want to make your own.

Down through the windsceen vent??

thats why I still haven't moved my radio & UHF....... working out how to run the wires without wrecking the dash...........
or how it will go trying to mount it solidly - it has Velcro to attach to the dash mat.........

@ BCol what about running the cable under a dash mat ?
Bigcol
14th March 2015, 09:01 AM
never actually thought of that TD..........
I was / am more worried about having it anchored to the dash safely
with my old GQ, I had the cables come up through where the dash bolted to the firewall
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn309/collorr/Dash.jpg (http://s307.photobucket.com/user/collorr/media/Dash.jpg.html)
cannot see them (ofcourse) but they had 2 brackets at the back that used the bolts that hold the dash to the firewall, as well as having a small "knife like" edge at the front, to slide in between the center dash and the dash itself to hold the front

Most dash pads Ive used stayed put pretty much , then just velcro the pod to the mat .
Cut a hole in the Mat and go from there,
All good in theory lol
