I have always had my services done by someone smarter than me when i was working and had money, now i am retired and cannot afford that anymore and need help with the handbrake cable which has snapped and needs replacing.
I assume one end connects to the handbrake lever (somewhere underneath the car maybe ?) but where does the other end connect and to what ? and how much hassle is it to replace.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the Hand brake on a Patrol is an old school drum brake on the rear tail shaft. i have never done this job but it will be very simple. you will have to remove your centre console and the hand brake assembly will be complete exposed. Will be basic.

Removing it from the lever is relatively simple. Disconnecting it from the actual transfer case is a little more difficult as usually the drum is full of brake dust and is difficult to see what you're doing. It's held in the transfer case using a small circlip. You will need to disconnect the rear tail shaft to remove the drum. When I'm in the shed next I'll take a pic of the transfer case I have.

Being an 06 it will have a 2 piece cable setup. One cable runs from the lever to a mechanism just in front of the sub tank the other then runs from the mechanism to the handbrake drum. Both are relatively easy to change.

Thanks guys for all the help,at least i had an idea of what i was getting into so i got motivated and had a look underneath and yes it is a two piece setup as and yes i had to pull the centre console out to get to the two bolts that hold the cable in place down to the see saw bracket that connects the second cable to the brake drum which looks ok as the cable up the hand brake is the one that has snapped so all i need now is a new cable, and put all the mess back together.

Thanks Guys :))

Thanks for the feedback mojo...... many don’t.

I spent a few weeks in your neck of the woods about 5 or 6 years ago, liked the town especially the greengrocers & the bread baked up on the hill each day. Stayed in the old convent whilst a prominent mechanical business in Geraldton was supposed to be fixing the motor in our bus, but wrecked it instead.
