I found a plug in the engine bay, behind the battery and next to the fuse/relay box. Any idea what it is and why it would be unplugged?

You'll probably find that there may be a few plugs that aren't connected to anything, just depends on what model you have and what specs. Have you tried tracing it to see where it goes?

The difference with this plug is that both ends are there, it is just not plugged in. I have not seen that before

Possibly part of the a/c fan loom, it usually sits near there

Trace the wires back if you can....I have a sh!t ton on plugs like this in mine. Everytime I get under the bonnet I seem to find another, and under the dash, and in behind panels. Nissan seem to use the same main loom for all the GU's born in the same year. Then when they get built thats where it differs and whether its a DX, ST, ST-L or Ti. Nissan just plug the extra bits in accordingly. Kinda makes things easier you want to do an upgrade on something.
Open up the relay box. You will find a few empty spots there.

Yeah, there are a heap of them on the patrol, but this one has both ends of the plug there and it has been disconnected. The previous owner obviously disconnected it for a reason, did they just forget to reconnect it or is it deliberately left disconnected because whatever is at the other end of it is broken?

That plug is for the Auto tranny (about 90% sure it is anyway).

If yours is a manual leave it disconnected.
If yours is an Auto post back up as further investigation needed.
