View Full Version : Google help - What does your setting say?

AB
19th February 2015, 08:05 AM
G'day folks,

Completely not related to Patrols but I really need some help on what other peoples default settings are around Australia.

Can anyone please do me a favour and open up Google, do a test search and then click on "SEARCH TOOLS".

Does it say your capital city or does it say the suburb you are currently in?

See attachment of an example.

Just trying to gather what other peoples default settings are across Australia, appreciate the help anyone!!!

10ms ain't bad. Most servers I play on my pings usually float around 13ms. And I'm one of the lowest on the server...Even 30ms is still good to use. But I remember gaming online when I first got my 56k dial up modem. Trying to download porn was impossible.... :)

Just a SWAG but maybe the results are all over the place because Google is picking up geocoding from wherever the ISP server or telco slammer or whatever is for a user at the time.

Maybe you need to also find out who the ISP is for each respondent?

Basically just want to know what the default location settings are on general Internet users around Australia.

Within x Kms puts you at capital city, ISP is also affected by the looks of it but does it affect your localised search results.

This is a massive game changer for anyone who distributes products or services Australia wide if you have been effected.

Unfortunately my industry according to google has put us in favour of a domestic search result for people wanting to shop locally although the majority of the users are commercial base.

It's a good thing for a challenge but bad, terribly bad on our business.

Loads of australian businesses who sell Australia wide and rely heavily on their online presence have been heavily hit.

It's a massive game changer!

But....there's a solid plan. Just takes a shipload of effort!!

Different location results depending on whether I’m signed in to Google or not. Not signed in it says Ballarat when I click on Search Tools. When I am signed in it gives the name of my suburb outside of Ballarat. Typing in Indian Restaurant it list them in Ballarat.

I reckon the differences folk are reporting may be explained by whether they have ever signed in to Google, & possibly how long ago. Eg. Did Doggy last sign into Google when he was in Sydney?

How location is auto-detected

If you don't set your location, Google shows an approximate location based on the following things to help provide you with the most relevant results:

Your IP address.
Your Location History if you have it turned on.
Google Toolbar's My Location feature if it’s turned on.
Recent locations you’ve searched for.

It's completely changed my industry and our business is suffering :(

I feel like punching google in the neck very hard for this!!!!

Yeah I noticed at work (I changed my work one from Sydney to warragul) if I type simply "electrician" it shows me all the local sparkies
So if I were to type "playground equipment" for example, would I need to be a bit closer to where you are based for you to be the top result?

Short answer is yes but long answer is you can work around it.
