Hi all, I have an 06 4.2tdi gu ute, I have just rebuilt the motor, recon inj pump, new radiator, water pump etc. I tow a big trailer and it used to get hot on a hot day when you would expect it to but since the rebuild it gets hot whenever you hit a long hill even when the weather is cool. I have been told the factory temp guage can be unreliable. Where should an aux temp guage be fitted to see exactly what the temp is doing? Any ideas what else could cause overheating? I'm thinking I should check the new thermostat make sure its opening properly too, any feedback is appreciated.

have you tried parking it so the nose of the car is uphill a little, get a 2lt or 1.25lt and cut bottom out..tape the lid end to the radiator and fill with water.make sure heater is on aswell and car running, give the hose a bit of a squeeze aswell....this will hopefully solve a airlock if you have one..I had the same problem not long agao..had the radiator replaced at a shop and always ran hotter than before..did this trick and it runs good now..Good luck mate

X 2 the coke bottle trick works a treat,
BA drilled and tapped somewhere for his thermostat probe
looked neat enough.
Most here say use only OE thermostats

You have the same motor as me. See here (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?8424-What-did-you-do-to-your-Patrol-today!&p=579908#post579908) Post #4649

I reckon its a 99% chance you need to burp the cooling system as advised.
The factory temp gauges on Patrols aren't unreliable.
They are as good or better than any other manuf out there.
If the temp indication was fine before the rebuild and now says it is running hot after the rebuild then I would belive it.
