View Full Version : Easiest to access park light positive? GU.

I’m close to finishing fitting my Redarc gauges. So far I have been able to run all the wires without need to remove any dash fascia. I now need to find two separate switched positive feeds. One needs to be ignition switched - this is easy to take from the fuse box. The second needs to be taken from a parking light switched source - this seems a little more difficult to find, especially as I’d like to do so without needing to dismantle the dash if possible, & preferably without need to run another wire through the firewall. I was surprised not to find a fuse for parking lights.

So, if you fitted your own gauges requiring a parking light feed, or are familiar with which wires to look for underneath the dash (Yendor?) please let me know. Alternatively which is the easiest to access parking light switched source with the minimum amount of dismantling to access it?

Thanks
Cuppa

There should definitely be a fuse for park lights.

There should be a wire to your stereo that is uaed ti illuminate the stereo when the lights are turned on.
Was in my GU...

That's what I thought Winnie, but it's not labelled in the fuse box under the dash, nor in the fuse box under the bonnet.

Mudski, my stereo lights up when ignition key is turned to 'acc'. Doesn't change when lights are turned on. DX doesn't have any dimming functions. Turn on the lights & things like the speedo & air con controls light up, but that' about it.

Roofy, it's not an ignition switched wire I need. It's a park light switched wire I need. Both serve different functions, used when programming multiple or individual gauges.

Thanks for your thoughts, but I'm no further ahead. I know I could run a wire from one of the parking lights back through the fire wall, but there has to be a better way. Finding an under dash wire with a test light would involve cutting wires to test them ...... Not going to happen.

I'm hoping someone will know what colour wire I need to look for.

that's where youl find the light wires and try electricparts acc 7.5a fuses under dash

Do you have a light in the ash tray like the GQ's? Mine comes on with parkers.

Ok, found the fuse, it's the one marked 'Tail lamp', but no good for the power source as it's not switched. I suppose I'd been hopeful that the fuse would be after the switch, so back to looking for a wire. Not easy for someone with my neck condition.

My multimeters do have pointy probes, but laying on my back underneath the dash, looking at a million wires (ex telstra) (many of which are thin enough to be damaged by sticking pointy bits into them) whilst trying to see a reading on a multimeter is proving a little difficult. A test light would help a bit, at least I could see it without moving & losing my 'place' on the wire. This is so frustrating because all the other wiring is done. I just need this power source & a T piece to screw the oil pressure gauge sender into & I'm done.

pop one of the switches that light up they all have little bulbs in them and tap in there

That's a good thought. I don't have a light that comes on with the ash tray, but that may be because the globe is missing or blown, I think I recall seeing a wire down there somewhere. Ta.

Its a good place for your loose change. Then when you want to use a car wash or get a drive through ice cream you've always got some shrapnel to pay with

I do that but forgot about the glob

Well it was a good idea Winnie. I pulled out the ash tray & there in front of me was a globe & a couple of wires running to it. Woohoo! I pulled out the wire & on the end was a plug. Relief was short lived though. There is nothing for the plug to plug into. I ended up stripping out the cab, seats, centre console , gearbox surround etc & searched everywhere but nothing above or below the floor. Thanks Mr Telstra.

Anyway I’ve sorted it, have tapped into the wire which feeds one of the front parking lights & will run it back into the cab tomorrow. Got sick of mozzies eating me tonight.

Do you know what the wire park light activates on the unit? If it's not used to dim your gauges could accessories work? I've got my gauges lit up during the day as well, switched off accessories

When using the ‘Enhanced Lighting Controller (which I need to do because my car has no dimming function) it is possible to wire the gauges so that only one programming button is used once each gauge is allocated an ‘ID’. When doing this the different power supplies have different functions for programming. Turn on ignition whilst holding the programming button & you access the ‘common’ menu. Eg. background colours, night/day settings etc. Turn on the parking light whilst holding the programming button & you can get individual gauge menus for things like alarms etc.
I’m just following the instruction which came with the gauges, I imagine that when switching the lights on without holding the programming button that it would switch from day to night setting. The Enhanced lighting controller allows you to set the level of brightness for each.

Once I’ve finished wiring them all up I reckon I might need to take a degree in gauge programming!
