hello there another newbie to the forum and also the patrol scene..
my usually 4b of choice has been an 80 series cruiser... hopefully i won't have any regrets changing over to a patrol.. I'm not bias like toyota vs nissan etc...
what evers reliable and looks after the family Im happy..
so should be another week or 2 and il pickup new rig...
its a 04 gu patrol.. 3td, 5 speed manual... at first i was a bit turned off.. being the zd30 as I've herd too much grenade stories... current owner has done mods to keep engine safe n reliable... but il be also fitting egt and boost gauge once i finally get it... current owner also has told me they had a crap dual mass flywheel design so has just upgraded that to a solid piece unit which he reckons has made it a lot better than before.. after test driving i was pretty happy with the power and fuel economy.. comfort and the way it handles.. any feedback on this particular model would be much appreciated..cheers and thank rata..

Welcome to the forum mate. Plenty of ZD30 that haven't grenaded, but they only make news when they do. If the previous owner has done some mods, NADS? shpuld be OK, but not sure if you can do NADS without boost and EGT guage. How would you know if its doing any good?
Anyway have fun with your new toy. Post some pics when you get it.

haha cheers for the welcomes... I'm not to sure exactly what mods have been done but he was telling me the mods prevent carbon build up on a sensor or something.. he has only done 4 trips off the black top so hasn't had much 4x4 work.. runs standard boost and all and all a tidy bus.. has bulbar and warn winch, arb spotties, dual battery setup with power to the rear for fridge etc, 3 inch old man emu lift kit and micky t 33x12.5 muddies.. and ice cold aircon which was a must.. haha

Is it recommended to do upgrades to the zd30s? Like exhaust and chip?

Welcome mate, surely the best forum on the net. If you need it, you can get it, if you want to know it, just ask it.
If you want to find it, go to the search bar for a universe of information.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the greatest show on earth.

Not necessary, but will help. So Yes.
The power gains are always welcome and the exhaust will help it breathe out so much better.

Cheers.. so if i do more performance mods dwn the line like.. bigger turbo.. bigger cooler.. exhaust and chip or ecu reflash... is it going to be beneficial? Or would money be better spent on saving towards another engine conversion.. sorry for all the questions but is it realy a matter of when and not if.. with the zd30s? Ive been up reading most of last night.. alot of negative coments and alot of people who rate n love there zd30... for nw il pretty happy with it.. just going to throw in a pillar pod and a couple gauges to keep n eye on everything.. any pics or recomendations/brands on this particular mod? Cheers all and thanks in advance...

Welcome to the forum bud.
These motors are limited somewhat to the mods that can be done. Well the turbo is the only thing that your limited too... An ECU reflash I don't think there is one for these Patrols (Di's). The CRD's there is however.
Bigger exhaust would be my first port of call for mods. While your there, get a bung welded into the dump pipe so you can fit and exhaust pyrometer gauge. 3inch is a good size for these trucks. I would advise against getting a system without the cat. Big fines if you get caught. Chance of this is minimal, but myself, I have been stopped for an RTA check twice in the last two years. But my area is full of bogans and idiots, so it's a given....
Going by your post I am unsure if you have the Dawes and needle valve installed, which is the grenade prevention system, or part thereof. If you have, great if you don't, we have already spoken about it briefly. But you need to make sure your intercooler in NOT leaking. Tell tale signs of a leaking IC is oil deposits on and around the core. So if it is, you need a new IC. In my opinion, there is no need to spend over $1000 on a IC for this motor. You can get new tig welded IC's with larger cores for well under $500. That is more than enough...Some will disagree but its just my opinion.
Other mods is the HPD billet Hi flow MAF housing and air box lid. Eff'ing expensive, I did this and can now run a crap load more boost than before. My car goes heaps better with it on. You can get chips that will pretty much do the same thing, trick the air flow meter, so it won't send your motor into limp mode. Threedogs has one of those chips... EGR block is a good mod but it looks your may already be done.

when you get your car, take some pics of the motor, post'em up and we will be able to see if you have NAD's or not. Lol.

first off will be make sure all nads mods are in place.. fit new egt and boost gauge in pillar pods.. maybe do exhaust and chip azwell since i have to do the bung into the dump pipe for the egt gauge..

can't really tell from your photo but the items in this ad from Mudski's online store are what you're basically looking for

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dawes-Valve-Needle-valve-and-EGR-plate-Nissan-GU-Patrol-ZD30-Direct-Injection-/331438095865?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4d2b3ffdf9

She's got no nads mate. Lol. I can see the vac lines running to the boost control solenoid under the intake pipe, after the air box and below the MAF sensor. Has no catch can either. You can see the hose running from the top of the motor to the intake pipe. The catch can basically goes "inline" on that hose.
Now, looking at the intercooler, I reckon it has a hole in it. Before anything, you'd best remove it and test it for leaks. Seal up both ends, dunk it in water and then use a bike pump to slightly pressurise the IC. If bubbles come out, then its fubar. But oil deposits on the IC are a dead give away that its leaking...

Thats the kit mate. You get a two page install and setup sheet aswell.

But the IC need to be sorted first, as if its not you will be doing your head in trying to work out why you can't raise the boost pressure via the Dawes valve. Because when your trying to, all the boost your creating is just leaking out of the hole in the intercooler.

Cheers threedogs... bin readn up..to early hours of the morning... can u pm details of ur scoop setup? I likey..

threedogs
12th February 2015, 03:22 PM
Can tell you here, Its an A.R.E scoop thats 70mm high and has vanes under it to direct air to the front of the intercooler as well as the back.
All this means is its suppose to work at say 60kph rather than 80kph with a stock scoop. Not cheap
I love it looks tuff and a few here have followed suit.
Stropp has a brand called Fairlane which is a wide scoop but not as high, That suits the CC intercoolers
Stropp is over your way and can give you details on his

Its only a 4cyl dont go spending big bucks on huge IC's that will only lower your EGT 100c
A tigged IC will work wonders and once you have your boost and egr sorted it will be a new truck to you

mullet_hunter
12th February 2015, 04:43 PM
cheers threedogs..

ok so far I've ordered nads kit from mudski
pillar pod to suit 52mm gauges from 4x4 concepts
new set of autemeter cobalt pyro n boost gauges
hdp catch can kit to suit zd30
hdp billet airflow meter housing...

just looking for a standard replacement intercooler that has been tigged not pressed.. then when goodies come i can start nads buildup thread...

mullet_hunter
12th February 2015, 04:46 PM
Hopefully i ordered the right hpd airflow housing.. do i have the later 08/04 sensor plug? Aparently theres two types the earlier being round and the later being rectangle?

mullet_hunter
12th February 2015, 04:57 PM
I thought intercoolr might of had a leak as i herd its quite common.. but looks alright to me... happy days...

threedogs
12th February 2015, 05:13 PM
looks good you could tape up one end and use a bike pump to apply a bit of pressure in a bucket and see how good it is.
May have just been cleaned maybe not hope Im wrong,
Just dry completely before re installing

mullet_hunter
12th February 2015, 05:23 PM
there was some minimal black stuff on it.. thought it must of been leaking.. it wasn't oil.. just black rubbery dust marks from where the rubbers sit from the scoop...
everything on oder so look forward to nad mods.. plenty of helpful members on the forum to help me out if i get stuck...

I received help from Boots when I did my NADS , as my other 4x4 was a V8 petrol
so looking under the bonnet of an electronically controlled Di diesel was new to me.
Once you know where things are it becomes easier and thats better for you down the track,
Check the rear right hose too they have a tendecy to blow off, blue in the pic
