Hi. I have a 01 3.0 td DI patrol that shat its injector pump, I cant afford to have it fixed so am doing it myself, I have a second hand pump and have pulled almost everything off except the timing chain and pump itself, this is where i am in no mans land as the instructions on how to proceed are confusing me a bit and i'm not prepared to go further without help, Is there anyone in Adelaide that has done this job and can help me get past this last hurdle, I would be happy to pay for your help with food drink and some cash if you wanted. I have to get this car up and running as I have just caught my wife cheating on me and need to use the patrol to help me move out. Please feel free to call me or text me.

I thought that injector pump overhauls required some pretty specialised equipment. I may be told I’m wrong, but I haven’t heard of anyone diy’ing pump overhauls. There’s gotta be some reason that folk who rebuild them charge two arms & two legs! Sorry I can’t help, good luck.

Hi Sorry I live to far away to help but you will need to wind the engine to TDC number 1 ready to inject so you timing marks line up them remove the engine pulley and front engine cover then remove timing chain and the timing gear set and timing chain sprocket from the front of the injection pump so you can then remove the gear from the front of the pump from what i read in the gregory's manual there is a 6mm hole in the flange place of the pump and the gear to keep it still after the timing chain come off do not let the engine rotate what ever you do or you will bend valves. putting it back together will be the issue as timing them correctly is crutial and tricky if you don't have one try a workshop manual from supercheap or autobarn it has details on removal and installation and timing

Apologies, I mis-read, thought you were overhauling the pump itself.

For what it is worth, my very talented mechanic did the timing thing when we had the water leak and engine was partly dismantled. It is not easy, requires a workshop manual, and has some funky drives on the gears that are somehow spring loaded. I suspect that is NOT a task for a DIY project.

I agree with Dr Garry. Replaced an injector pump on my work truck and got a mechanic to time it. Apparently a bit of an art and can do a fair bit of damage if you get it wrong.

Bump again

The OP wanted people to call or text him... he hasn't been back.
Most people will pass on that.

Having said that onlyme's post was pretty definitive if he does return.

Hi. No i'm not doing the overhaul of the pump itself as I have one to go on but i need to get the old one off and having trouble with the instructions, apparently it has to be set up timing wise etc before it come off.

I have a Haymes manual from supercheap but having trouble understanding and finding things in it. I am only a little mechanically minded so I can pull stuff apart and put it together but thats where it ends, I may have bitten off more than I can chew but its too late now i've gone too far with it.

The timing is to do with top dead centre once you have that correct you should be fine. As long as it is true tdc.

Timing marks on the gears aa bb cc dd ee, my harmonic balance had 2 timing marks on it, first mark was incorrect, some gears are also(forget the term) may take 16 or more revolutions to line up correctly.

I have seen alot of mechanics stuff it up the first time, I found it quite easy aslong as you have alot of beer.

Unfortuntley to far for me bro, Im sorry to here what has happened.

So far I have taken everything off the motor, I have not taken off the water pump and the main front cover that exposes all the gears, I have only taken the cover that exposes the timing chain. To do this job do i have to take all the other stuff off too ? or can I do it without doing all that, and does the oil sump have to come off for that ??

I have decided to get the car down to Cross Country 4x4 and let them do it, it will still be cheaper than nissan. I would like to thankyou all for your advice on the matter.
