(Me) g'day mate, just want to get the tyres rotated on the Patrol.
(BJ) yep sure, no worries, $66 with balance.
(Me) that's for the 5 wheels?
(BJ) no, we only usually do 4.
(Me) what and leave a new tyre on the back to perish?
(BJ) well when you need new tyres you only need to buy 3.
(Me) well I don't run that way.
(BJ) well we usually only do the 4, just rotate the front to back.
(Me) that's ridiculous, why would you do that on a 4wd?
(BJ) that's how Bob Jane want us to do it.
(Me) I'm outa here.

Do it yourself and buy a slab of beer and have change from the $66...

I would but I lent my wheel balancer to a mate in Little Rock, Arkansas.

I bought 6 tyres from Traralgon Tyrepower. Part of the deal was free tyre rotations every 10,000 kms.a Have since moved to Ballarat. Too far to go for a tyre rotation. Contacted Ballarat Tyrepower to see if they would do the tyre rotation for me as per the original deal. Told them I also wanted 3 more tyres + 3 ROH Blak Trak Rims. I was gobsmacked when they told me that they wouldn’t do the tyre rotation for free because the Tyrepower outlets operate as indivual franchises. I accept the reason, but reckon that having been informed that I was new to the area AND wanting to buy 3 tyres + rims they were totally lacking in business sense. Had they agreed to do the tyre rotation for nothing (rather than wanting to charge me $44) they would have had a new long term customer. As it is they’ve lost me. Shame because the Tyrepower mob in Traralgon were excellent to deal with.

Have you tried talking to head office I'm sure they would prefer a happy long term customer that has good word of mouth
Rather than someone who is not happy at all and wont sing the praises of his local tyre service.
Knowing you I think you could take this matter further and in your favour

You made 2 mistakes

1. Moving to Ballarat - only place I know that can snow in the summer and has its own climate, different to the rest of Victoria. It may be a big city now but deep down its still a country town.
2. You looked new in town.

Even over here in Perth bob jane are useless, I have one rim that is slightly out of wack and they told me it could not be balanced, took it to my normal guy 30 mins away and he laughed when he looked at it, ripped the weights off and balanced it up and said nothing wrong with it. Guess who I avoid now and drive the extra distance.

Personaly I wouldn't buy 5 new tyres not because it cost more but just that its not really required,
a spare is just that a spare to get you somewhere ,where you can get the damaged tyre repaired.
Ive never brought 5 tyres and expect I never will and been 4x4ing for a long while now,
Ideally my spare will have 50% tread and same size and similar tread.
once repaired the tyres can be changed back over when it is convenient.

I like all my tyres to be the same...... the spare might only be a spare but at least its a spare of the same

I would rotate all 5. I run 2 sets, roadies and muddies and they get changed frequent enough I don't keep track what goes where.

When I get matching wheels & tyres on the Tvan it’s going to make tyre rotations an ‘interesting’ & marathon affair. 4 + 2+ 2 + 1. 9 wheels & tyres!

I like to be different, Hell, what am I saying, I am different.
Just ask anyone who's met me.

I run a 6 tyre rotation.
It's a hangover from running directional tyres (Procomps)
For non-directional
Fronts go left to right
Rears go left to right
Spare stays as a spare and 6th is a carcass for really out of the way trips
When the first pair are down enough I buy 2 more and they become spare and carcass and the originals go on the truck

Been rotating tyres for years.

Each time I change from roadies to muddied they get marked with a paint pen.

Then moved one spot clockwise including the spares on the 6 roadies / outback trip AT's.

The MT's spare has never been roaded so is not included.

When I buy a new set I will get 3 so 4 new tyres on the road IYKWIM.

some ppl I know use their tyres till about 50% then trade them in on a new set.
they get say $600 for their old tyres and pay $600 for a new set.
You need to set this up when you buy your tyres, most tyre outlets will do this

Good plan.

Muddies start to become useless under 50% and the chances of punctures in AT's rises exponentially.

Yep you get to use the best part of the tyre and only pay $600 or whatever agreement you had.
but running new tyres nearly all the time

I have worked for Bob Jane, Beaurepaires, Jax & Kmart tyre & Auto. With 10yrs experience as a wheel aligner and tyre fitter. They are all the same, all they offer is 4 wheel balance and will only roll tyres front to back and call it a rotation and balance. To get the best from your radial tyres when rotating 4 only. RHF to LHR, LHR to LHF, LHF to RHR, RHR to RHF. Spare can be included by dropping to LHR with the RHF to spare. The key to long wear is regular (5000k) rotations crossing the tyres onto the rear, reverse rotation which helps to eliminate tyre memory from bad alignments or the many roundabouts and gives them a chance to run flat again while on the back. Crossing tyres on the steer wheels can cause or reduce tyre pull. I have argued with all the tyre stores on how I want my tyres moved and most simply won't do it. So as a general rule I only get the front tyres balanced after I have rotated them myself. To make it easier the torque rated extensions and socket set similar to what the tyre store use can be bought from Auto Pro and fitted to a battery or air impact gun,,,,, very quick and never under or over tensioned. Just my 2 cents worth
