Has anyone had problems with the police for installing lights or a light bar on the roof rack? I know it is illegal for road use and should only be for off-roading but do people get picked on by the police?
I am in SA and it seems lots of people have them hear. I also drive over into Victoria several times a year so are there any issues there?

A friend installed a Hella light bar onto his roof rack last week and it sure throws out a lot of light in front and to the sides of the car. Does not have quite the range that his HIDs have but a lot more spread.

I am in Vic and never been picked up. But, in saying that, my light bar is little, so maybe they feel sorry for me.

LOL. Maybe a little light bar is the answer. ;)

They say size doesnt matter.....

Honestly, I think that like your go fast cars, the boys in blue probably dont take much notice unless you've got a 6" lift, 38's, P plates, and non 6 cyl noises coming from it. Or your doing something wrong.

That's what TJM told my mate. He would have to be unlucky to meet a cop who wants to get him for any technicality.

If it isn't wired to the headlights it is a work light and therefore legal.
Same as swivel mounted hunting lights etc etc

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it, Officer

I've had mine since 2011 and pulled over many times since then, but never picked on my lights.

Hate to tell you fellas but Australian design regulation (ADR's) require auxiliary driving lights to be below the bonnet and not more than 1.5(?)m. Work lights are not permitted to face forward and a whole swag of other stuff that people ( read police) seem to have forgotten about until they need to full fill a quota or to raise much needed state revenue. So the best advice is to read up and make an informed decision.
ADR'S are a good start as is your local reputable roadworthy/ inspection centre.

That makes sense E.T.
TJM put a separate switch on my mates car so it could be classed as a work light.

I think the main question in this thread is how heavy is this policed. Not how legal is it. I believe most know its illegal.

You're the man, Winnie. I had completely forgotten... Some still believe different interpretations, tho.

The states will get there one day (hopefully soon) and we will have some clear regulations. Here is SA we no longer have to pair up lights (light bars) so you can get one long one rather than two smaller ones.
