My alternator packed it in yesterday afternoon and I was wondering if it's better to build it or buy a new one. I need to be back on the road asap. Are they easy to rebuild? Install? Otherwise where could I buy an alternator on a Saturday morning in Brisbane? I have a '02 Patrol. Thanks in advance guys

If you need to get back on the road asap, then grab a new one and install.

if you have some time, then remove, take to your auto electrician, then wait for him to rebuild.

Or do both. Fit a new one and have the old one rebuilt in time as a spare.

As mudrunner said..if time is short maybe chuck an eBay job in for now and be mobile while your other some is being rebuilt..then swap them back later and keep the eBay job as a spare.

I know I have a spare alternator and starter motor sitting on the shelf just in case..but that's because its a safari..damn 24v lol

Get a new alternator, as I was told by an auto electrician it costs more to recondition an old one. He reckons the only time he`d recon one would be when he has an apprentice to get experience to rebuild one.

Well I've just rebuilt mine. Lol..
2 bearings, $12
2 new contacts, $9
A few cans of degreaser and contact cleaner.

So my outcome isn't 100%.. Still only getting 13.8v.

So he also mentioned you can replace the diode plate. $50.
So I think after even replacing the plate I'll be well in front of a new one.

Try the wreckers, as sometimes you can get an alternator that only needs brushes and bearings. It also gives you some spare parts.

I bought my alternator from this mod under there other ebay name, I can't think of atm. I had to laugh, I get there, it's around 35c, the Asian wife, or mother answers the door of the factory, with snow gloves on, beanie on, a heavy coat and a scarf. It was bloody hot outside! I tell her what I want, she yells down to the back of the factory in her lingo and a guy comes running down with my part. I go to pay and it's 80$ cheaper than what they list it for. Freight cost not in their online final price too.
I'm skeptical that it's a 100 amp alternator, not the 90 amp one it usually is but I needed one now and it works so I didn't care much.

Was just looking into this as my alts playing up, only 12.35 volt output.
thinking about replacing the plate assembly,
they claim the tb & td reg plates are the same.

OK----- looking at manual spec, Hitachi make 100 amp alts for both, ok it's sounding right so far.
their selling the plate for $121 inc del.
Is this right ????????
