I bought my first patrol in 1984 it was an MQ diesel which i owned for about 8 years before I had the opportunity to buy a low km MK turbo diesel which i had for about 12 years . The turbo was a big improvement over the MQ but nevertheless I learned a lot of valuable things about 4WDs from the MQ especially just what you can and cannot do with a 4WD.
We did quite a few trips in the MQ the most extensive being a 17000 Km journey around a fair bit of Australia. One of the highlights of our adventures was traversing the Gunbarrel Highway in convoy with a group of four 4WD vechicles ( having previous to this read Len Beadell's book describing the building of the highway as part of the atomic bomb testing program ). This trip proved to me the immense value and security in travelling with a group especially in areas such as these .
