View Full Version : Boost leak

Hi guys,

I've got a boost leak at around 10psi. Reading a few of the threads on here I thought it was the exhaust manifold gasket. $700 later proved that wrong.

I've also read that if could be the egr pipe. Can the egr pipe still make a leak sound if the egr has been blanked off?

Ive checked all the ic hoses.

Will a leaking IC make a noise?

Thanks in advance.
Heath

Hey mate.
Are you visually losing boost, like can you see it on the boost gauge and/or losing power ? Or are you just judging it by sound ??
Mine does the same, it sounds like an air gushing sound when the turbo begins to work and boost goes up. One would swear it was an air/boost leak somewhere, but mine ended up being the turbo on it's way. Just throwing the idea out there.
Jump in the passenger seat, open the window, turn the snorkel (if you have one) backwards and you will hear what i mean (if it is the turbo). There is a not quit right sound coming through the snorkel.

Hi Hodge,

It doesn't seem to lose boost and it will go up to 14psi.

I'll give your snorkel idea a go this morning.

Did you have to replace your turbo?

Cheers

I didn't replace it yet mate, as turbo was and still is boosting fine. Another dead giveaway, on my car anyway is, heaps of oil in the IC, even after catch can fitted. But I know it will bite me in the rear end one day and let go half way up some track in the middle of nowhere. I've just had bigger things to tend to, still do, on this lemon.

Here is my original thread here, hasn't been replied to for a while.

I also recorded the sound through the snorkel a while back, trying to find it, when I do I will post it up to show you what mine sounds like.

What year is your Patrol,?
Is the IC oily ?

Hi threedogs,

It's an 02. There was a some oil on the underside, but pretty clean compared to some of the pictures I've seen.

Thanks
Heath

If its the original IC chances are its leaking,
you could remove it and give it a clean then tape up one end
and apply a bit of pressure via a bike pump and dip in in water.
You may be surprised .Make sure its dry before installing again
hair dryer will help there.
Clean your MAF sensor while your at it, both not hard jobs

Is it holding the 14psi boost? If your ic is oily on the under side I bet it has a hole somewhere.
Also check the egr pipe where the plate is. These can warp to giving off a sound when you accelerate.

Yeah it is the original ic and I do plan on replacing it when funds permit (I should have spent the money on that rather than getting the manifold gasket replaced)

I haven't tested it to see if it holds at 14 as I have the needle valve backed off a bit because of that leak.

I'm off to fraser island tomorrow morning, should I take the spool up rate back to where it should be?

I was worried about the screeching noise which is why I backed it off.

I'll go have a little look at what's involved in taking the egr pipe off.

Thanks for all the advice.

If it has a screeching noise I would think the EGR pipe is split.
have you blocked the egr if not do it it might solve your problem.
The noise through the snorkle is just the noise from forced induction imo

I haven't long had the car. The previous owner said he blanked it.

I'm not game to start pulling things apart with going away tomorrow, but I will pull the pipe off when I get back.

Thanks a lot for your help so far.
