So I request anyone willing to help out in any way would be greatful.
If he doesn't like this thread, then F..... Him cos I'm doing it anyway whether his likes it or not.

I will donate $100 to his cause.

Can we please wait for Jonathan to let us know what his plans are? Is he going to rebuild this motor? Nobody knows so let's just see what he wants to do.

Then shower him with gifts =)

I'm definitely in. But in the end am happy for BA to make whatever choice he wants. Take some good advice and have a think. I want to rush to support you so you know your options, but don't want to rush you in a choice. Go at your pace.

I'm up for $200, but let's see what is needed, can adjust up or down a bit based on the requirements and how much comes in.

Help is help too from my side. If for whatever reason you don't want to do the motor, happy for you to use it on anything else. Don't need to know what. That's your business. But would obviously love to see the truck on the road and a smile on your face.

Final comment, these public amounts also make me a little uncomfortable. Don't think people should have to state it outloud. Everyone is at a different stage and got different things going. For some of us now is ok to find some cash, but for others not. No one should have to feel like their name is not on the list or that they are not putting in enough. Some might want to hep instead of cash. Some might just be in that place where they'd love to but can't do either right now. Obviously somehow he needs to know how much is gonna come in?
I'd be happy enough to get account details and drop it in already. That way you'll really know. Won't even need to know it was from me

Shit guys.... I am not sure how to approach this or what to say.. many of you know I try to help others as much as I can but struggle a bit with people helping me (Unless its George ).

I do not even know what I am doing at this stage as we have pulled the sump off and all the main bearing are good.. but we did find a chewed out gear that is at the end of the crank that drives the oil pump and cam..

Then we found heaps or very thing tapes of steel in the bottom of the sump... lots of it?

I have not taken the timing cover off as I do not have a 42mm socket.

George was talking of finding a cheap engine but I thought it would be another can of worms? he also mentioned that machining would cost heaps if I was to rebuild this engine with new liners and pistons and so on and it would not be finished for a while as it is too close to the holidays.

I need the brains trust to get together and think for me as I seem to make all the wrong decisions this year?????????????????????????????? (is that enough question marks for you Newby??)

Oh and guys that have been calling me or texting I am sorry I have not got back to everyone but I have been flat out with work and Alexander (doctors appointment) and trying to get this sorted... thanks Matty for helping me get the donk out mate.

I am so tired....

O.k. Cheap engine is not gonna happen. You've been through this crap twice now. I have my turbo block here like I mentioned, it has the larger gudgeon pins, the different squirters and I would think the high volume oil pump. Maybe Nissannewby can verify more on this. If the funds don't stretch enough to get the turbo kit and larger rods, squirters and hi volume pump, I have mine here. Unless Matty thinks the Non turbo kit will do the job. I wouldn't think so but I am no expert. But the price of the non turbo kit BA listed in the other thread, I can get him a Turbo kit.
So I am happy to lob in a couple of hunge and order the parts from Engines Australia. I just don't have the time to pick things up at the moment etc etc.

Yeah from my understanding it ain't cheap, previous owner if mine had the bottom end rebuilt and what not, I can't remember how much it cost and the exact work done and what caused it, but it was a few thousand

I'm in again.
People talk of rebuilds being 5-6 thousand.
I'm guessing 2-3 for the kits and 2-3 for labour and machining.
It's not easy but you find the right place it should not be huge.

Imo I say rebuild all they way. Start fresh. That way you know what you have.
But may I also throw in the opinion of ditching the turbo?
I know it's a step backwards but it will
1 get you some funds to aid in the whole thing
And 2 give you that extra reliability you need right now.
Sure there a slug NA but reliable as Mrs palmer and her 5...

Just a thought mate. But yea I'm in

I'll chip in cash and get the rest of the job done which ever direction this goes.

What everyone needs to understand is another motor is the cheapest and quickest alternative. Any reputable wrecker will offer at a minimum a 30 day warrenty and the car will be back on the road by Christmas and not from some goose off facebook or old mate down the road, a decent tested 2nd hand motor.

I can tell you now on a good day when you send components to a machinist it can take 2 - 3 weeks to get them back, also the parts that have failed we are not sure how much they are, how long it will take to get them or how deep the problems are. If jonathan decides to rebuild his can will be off the road till mid February

Mark your block you've stripped did you mark where each part came from or did you just pull it down??

Kallen mate, turbo or not this motor would've shit itself anyway coz or whats happened to the timing gears

There sounds to be at least quite a few positives with this approach. It has to be significantly easier with the labour involved. I'm also concerned that it is easy for me to give money, but I'm not gonna get lumbered with all the rebuild work and responsibility. I'm in IT and hate it when people just assume I would have no more pleasure than to spend the rest of my life fixing their computer (even though I don't do PC type IT). I know you are mates George, but there must be some days when you want to see the end of it too.

Yea I get that. But the turbo is a luxury, not necessity.
And not to smash windows here ba's good luck angel must be farking the devil atm.
I'd hate to see all this work again go into the motor then have the cheap turbo do an impeller an fark the internals.
Just smash some 3" mufflers in the system and sell the rest.

Either way it's ba's decision but if it were me I'd take the time, and rebuild an NA motor and have reliable motoring for the next million kilometres.

I have only meet some of you once or twice and most never. My last 4x4 cost me a fortune just to get it running right which never did and sold it.

Now I'm here and l'm not going anywhere. I've got what I want and have no intention of selling.

I feel for ya BA been down that road also.
I'll be totally honest. I can't help out with the coin, but am more than willing to help out wherever possible. Mudski has mentioned that he can't pick up some things I can. I'm no mechanic but I do know my way around engines. Basically I'm here to help and not to far away from Thomo and BA

What I want to see the end of is my mate and his famiky being torn up over his car, at the end of the day shit happens, we get over it and move on. Working on cars is what I've done my whole life so the actual physical side of the job is no issue at all even tho I do it day in day out I'd try and help a mate out a pull a 20 hour shift to get them on the road again like I have done in the past in a garage or on the side of the road, its what I do lol. The 2nd hand motor like I said is not onky the fastest alternative but you have some form of piece of mind with some form of warrenty which to me takes some stress away from the situation and not worry about any underlying issues.

Everyone keeps saying to rebuild but no one has asked jonathan if he gas the time or money to do so have they!?

Look mate this is not the time or place to get into this sort of debate but obviously you don't get nothing coz how do you know the reason it was cheap to buy??? Is it coz of its place of manufacture or coz it was made buy a sub company of one of the well known manufacturers using an older design thats out patent or os it coz it was mass produced to lower the cost of manufacturing?? I don't know where you get your information from but don't believe everything you read or hear

nissannewby
16th December 2014, 09:30 AM
I will first start by saying chill out and just take a step back. This is not the place for any debate.

Mudski your correct about your block and Jono can easily use his turbo kit with it.

Machining is all cost dependant on how much is required but should not be more than $2000.

I think westy has been misunderstood and no suggestion here is a bad suggestion. He proposed Jono sell his turbo kit to aid with funds for getting this back on the road, sure its a backwards step performance wise but is certainly a way to ease the financial side of it. Again it is only a suggestion.

There should be no "should" or "should not" in this thread, just suggestions and info to arm Jono with all the tools he requires to make an inform decision. Regardless of his decision it will be the right one. There is more to this than just throwing another engine in it.

So lets way up the pros and cons then to help the man out.

Rebuild- Pros- The engine will be fresh and the condition now known, being new should give years of trouble free motoring.
Cons- Time and cost, obviously any machining that may be required will take time, cost will come from machining and parts

Secondhand motor- Pros- The quickest way to have the car running.
Cons- Another unknown, yes there is a 30 day warranty but who says it wont fail and how do we know the condition.

New motor- Pros- Also a quick option and also a warranty is given (either a reco or crate)
Cons- Again cost will be up there.

Keep the generosity, info and suggestions flowing. If Jono has any questions then he is allowed to ask. Sometimes just listening is a good thing.

Mat check your pm's mate

Still the bottom end is still unknown and we're just assuming at this point and untill we can get it to rotate I'm assuming the worst untill we strip it down to check the condition of the crank which imo is the most imoortant part. 2k was the same rough cost I told jonathan last night and it will only go up.

Should add to the pros of the 2nd hand motor that you could get a genuine motor that might go for years and years trouble free aswell, its a gamble that's worth considering

These are not total figures and complete info but here is what I have so far..

Newby rang with a price on high end reco but the finer details are not worked out as far as exchange or so on for $4400

Sean can get a short engine from Readies with warranty (30days) now he got a price of $2000 but was going to ring him back to put the screws in.

AB was on the phone to Paul at Patrolapart and Paul strongly suggested rebuilding the bottom end and if pistons are fine do not touch them.. Now some vague prices for machining start at $1000 for new bearings and the machine work but this depends on how much damage is done and could be as high as $2000?

The head is fine and would just need a very light shave.

Any thoughts kids?

It looks like you have a lot of support here BA in getting your troubles sorted.

This kind of gesture makes me glad I started this forum in the first place so my suggestion is to lap it up and take it with open arms to get your rig sorted.

We all know that you'll be there to help another friend on here as already proven mate so don't be shy.

But as mentioned on the phone, lets work out the right approach first.

Paul's suggestion does have a lot of Merritt if other avenues don't work out and if the engine checks out.

Thanks again guys... I still have no idea what I am doing, I just got back from Toorak and little huggy fell asleep on the way back and I wish someone could have carried me to bed... I am so tired.

There is only one week till xmas with no plan in place as yet.

I did not touch the engine today and am a little flat and over it for the moment..( please dont tell me to put the thing away for a couple of months) I just cleaned the house and laundry and crap and cooked a proper dinner and try and get some energy back.

I threatend to end the life of this little yuppie prick in Toorak today and was so close to dragging him into the middle of the road... not because of what he did to me but how he reacted to being a shit.... deep breaths.

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

As I mentioned I am more than happy to chip in once a decision is made. IMO a quality reputable exchange motor would be good option fairly quick too. I would he happy with pauls (patrolapart) advise he does no his stuff and is a good resource. Second hand motor is a gamble, mines been good but is a bit of an unknown.
Anyways take your time to make a decision when you feel happy about it. Bloody good to see such support, it'll be going beter than ever soon.

I am still not sure which way to go with this.. probably the easiest and maybe the cheapest is to get a short motor. . Readies will not budge with there price but stand by the engine as they say they know its history.

Newby has made a lot of enquiries and the reco is looking to be much to expensive but machining is still an option but this time of year it is going to be hard.

I have tried all morning to get the balancer off the engine but it is stuck pretty good and George came around briefly and had no luck.

Thanks newby sean and ab for looking into these options.

I personally would like to do a proper rebuild or get that Short motor from Readies but it looks like there is no budget it for that so the cheaper way seems to be the only option.

My only fear or doing a patch up on this bottom end is that there was that knock when the engine was cold and was told it was a gudgeon ??

Also all the timing gears could cost a fortune and was going to price them up today? getting the head checked is another $200???

People keep asking me "So do you know what you are going to do" and " Whats your budget".... No I dont know and the budget is small in comparison to all the options??

I wish that bloody rifle would sell and normally it would sell easy...

I just had a terrible night with chills that nearly made me pass out then followed by sweats that lasted all night... Alexander was playing doctor and looking after me checking my temps and so on, he is such a good boy.

Yesterday I asked AB to return everyones money as I cannot see this working... he has refused my request so far.

The cheapest and easiest option is looking like a whole engine but this does not look to be achievable with the funds at hand.

I have lowered the price on my rifle to $700 which makes me want to vomit and even with money I can scrape it will leave me short by a fair bit.

I reached a low point yesterday with some serious depression sinking in and with severe tonsillitis and being so sick this is not helping my mental state.

I still think I should walk away but this is hard to do as I love 4wding and being in the bush so much and was so close to finally have a set up I could depend on and be happy with.

I am still so very sick and maybe not thinking clearly but I am so tired of this all.... when the engine went on the Hume I wanted to walk straight out onto the freeway in front of a truck but my family would have been the only ones to suffer not me.

I am not looking for advice about what I should do I am just venting as my wife not being here is hard with no adults to talk to.....

I want to thank those that have been so generous and if things dont work out AB will return your money as I am not going ahead unless it is doable.

just kidding, im pretty sure when andy mentioned his account before it sounded like it was an internet banking account, only accesible from the net. i have one of those with NAB and i can only transfer from that account to my savings account, so no direct spendability. makes me consider spending my money a little more before i impulse buy lol

Ok today is slightly clearer in my head and I have been paid early from my only client... now I was supposed to live off this money while my wife is away and use it for travel but this is no longer happening so I can afford $800 and that leaves me and my son with $400 to live on for the next 3 weeks plus still have insurance and other auto payments come out...

If only the bloody rifle would sell... I really hope nothing pops up that I have missed ?? I went through all the bills and think it is covered..

Now I dont know how much money has been raised as AB is handling this.

If this does not work out then as stated before hand everything back and I will move on with my life.

My tonsillitis is still bad and the drugs do not seem to be working.. 38.9 was my last temp check and was at real low yesterday.

As I said to AB I am taken back as to the help and generosity.... I am not sure how I can thank everyone or make it up to you all.

That is a bloody lot of hugs, maybe even a little bottom squeeze !!!!!!

It looks like at this stage it is a whole engine being put in from a wreckers with 3 months warranty.... this time I am just leaving it up to George as I seem to make all the wrong choices.

He sent me a list of about 6 engines plus Patroldocta got back to me straight away with prices also which were on par with what George was getting... never heard back from that other place, you know the one that is a sponsor here... they must be too important.

George has been getting ready getting his car back together for his sleep over tonight with Winnie so think he will be running around like a crazy Greek today.

Don't feel bad mate, the buggah did the same for me, when he sent me the battery tray, wouldn't take any money for it and wouldn't give me his details when I eventually had the coin. This really is cool. Whole point of a gift is that it is, well a gift. You don't have to repay it or repay in some other way.

Bound to be a few other costs like oils and filters and few other things that might need a bit of love and attention when it first goes in. If there are left overs, use it to fill the tank a few times, save some for the next maintenance that comes up or just buy George a bunch of beers? Whatever you think of, sure you can be creative? But it was clearly given as a gift and people have kept giving so just enjoy it.

It really is awesome though.
