that hold the wheels onto the car - no idea what they are called but look like a hip ball and socket on the wheel?
do they need to be smeared with grease at all?

Ball joint mate. Houses the king pins and cv joint.
They shouldnt have a huge amount of grease on them, the wiper seals will keep them pretty clean. If yours do have have grease showing I'd say your seals are stuffed and I'd be fixing the asap. You do not want dirt, grit and water in that area.

No you don't need to the grease is already inside and gets wiped off with the seal when you turn

no grease on them - they seem pretty smooth and clean on the visible part - i was just wondering if i needed to grease them.. them being the "ball joints"!

Agree its the Swivel Hub. Actually its call the Trunnion Socket. No it should be clean and smooth and teh scraper seal should keep it in good order.

If you want to maintain the seals, giving them a wipe to clean them every so often will benefit them.

oh.. one last thing!
mainly in the morning as i pull off i get a sound coming from that area at the front that sounds like a bunch of seagulls if that makes sense? only when i pull off and usually first thing in the morning for a few seconds. not sure if its my suspension, brake pads, or something else.

Have you replace the wheel bearings lately? When I first did mine I didn't lube up the hub seal and seal runner with some grease and it ran dry on the hub and squealed like a pig. I though I was in "Deliverance". Lol. Removed the hubs, new seals again, greased them up and its all good.
