Hi guys, is there anything in particular I should be doing to the motor as ive only just heard that these 3ltr turbo diesels can be prone to engine failures and melt pistons, is that correct ? Or does it come down to maintenance ? Any help would be appreciated . Cheers Tony.

Also PM Mudski, as he has the items for NADS KITS in stock most of the time.
Very important to get a boost gauge and EGT gauge before you do you NADS.
I believe but can't be sure includes
Dawes and needle valve for boost controlling
Oil Catch can
Can't remember the rest.
Plenty of info on Nads.

Yeah the basic nads kit is dawes, needle valve and egr block. Also a catch can.
Before doing the nads it is 100% important that your intercooler isn't leaking. As the ic's on these are prone to leaking, and if it is you wont be able to set the dawes pressure up.

I hate giving bad advice to others, as I had a 2001 model, and as I was using it every day for work I traded it in on a newer model for peace of mind .... never had any issues mind you.
Having said that, there are quite a few possibilities for your truck, and one is that it may have already had a engine issue, and been replaced / repaired
The second is, there is plenty of them still travelling about just fine ... seems to be luck of the draw .... our receptionist at work had a 2000 model, never warmed it up, just jumped in and floored it and off she goes, 320,000klms and no issues.
Third, all trucks and vehicles need maintenance and money spent, including Mercedes Benz's, Audi's, Toyota's, and most major repairs these days will cost lots of dollars due to the complexity of the parts and specialist labour required ( or maybe it is just profit taking ) ..... these days you are lucky to get change from $5000 on a faulty transmission or drivetrain issue, so if you keep everything in perspective ( and I know no-one wants to spend any cash on a vehicle ), $10,000 to change or replace a motor is only double what you would spend on any other vehicle in its lifespan.....
