G'day guys, originally i was going to save my coin for a td42t convertion but someone has offered me a cummings engine for 2.5k. Apparently they do fit into the patrols but was wondering what id need to do it. The td42t path was going to cost around the 10 grand mark with the work done myself. And that the engine (160***kms) upgraded turbo and intercooler with rad and all bolt ons for 7.5k. So in saying that, would the costs be similar if i were to go down the cummings path. If anyone knows of/done this convertion, id love to have a chat. Thanks ;)

I think marks does adaptors for some of the Cummings range.
I think the only money you'll severity the engine price difference.
The wiring, exhaust system and all the add ons will have to change regardless of engine.
One thinking though is engineering may be easier with the td42 as although they didn't sell the td42 in Aus past 04 they still did overseas.
The Cummings motor will need full cert and engineering.
Ive also read the popular Cummings conversion is overrated.
Imo td42 turbo all the way.

I didnt think that the cummings was all though that popular. Ive been trying to get info all accross the net but no luck as it hasnt been done that many times. Its allways people who know someone thats done it. Ive only heard good things about the td42t but itll be nice to have something a little different. But having the torque of a truck-My gawwd

Which cummins engine is available to you?
Killa Kustom Kables are doing some r&d on the 6bt into a gu with some good results so far.

I did ring killa to see if it was actually possible and they said it was. But the bloke who offered it to me has lost patience and sold it on me :'( i am so bummed out right now. I wouldnt even know where to look for a CUMMINS engine. Unless i can find another, looks like itll still be the td42t conversion. Appreciate the info guys :)

Yea i know mate, made me angry!! Is there any other truck like engines that would be easier to get? Id love that torque of a truck, and want to have a car that stands out abit. Be different from the crowd ect. Thats what i would like to do anyway, but im seriously thinking of cutting llmy loses and just rebuilding the 2.8. Even though the harmonic balancer is held on by liquid metal stuff.

throw an LS2 or some LS motor in it fuel injection parts evertwher ,expect maybe 18/100 for fuel might be less driven sedately , yeah right.
Wish my troopy had reg so you could go for a burn in that, hang on sit down for sure, plus sounds awesome

I was thinking about an lsx conversion but wouldnt it be more mucking around switching the fuel lines ect from diesel to petrol?

Have you looked at the 4bt?
There are plenty of options that haven't been done that would be quite good but then you have to be the pioneer to do so.
As for the fuel lines just flush them with some petrol and it will be fine. You will at least need a fuel pump if a petrol conversion happens whether it's in take or external.
What about the 4.0 ford engine? Better again the turbo version. There are kits available for these now.

any conversion has the potential to become a nightmare, I've done it once would I do it again ....no.
Chev motor in a tojo with ford alternator, just too many bits and bobs, went very well but not the thing I would cross the Simmo with.
It featured on 4wd tv a few times, all Simon would say is there goes John idling away again, after all it was fully locked,
it sounded like an old school muscle car lol

So you have done the 6bt cummins conversion? And that old school muscle car sound would be good! Haha

nah I have a cast iron chev with gas heads the next cam above towing so a little lumpy and a melling HD oil pump with HEI dizzy
edelbrock performer intake with a 650 square bore carbie, carbie was a bit big but worked ok,
block hugger headers ceramic coated inside and out, New world gas system. 2.5" system.

Sounds nice mate, ive had another look to see if i can find a cummins block, and i have had some luck because i decided to spell it correctly :) theres a bloke near me the has them so i gave him a ring and he was saying its going to be cheaper to get the 12v motor and not the 24 as they (24) are electronic. And that the 12 only has electronic injectors but can be made mechanical. He also said not to get one from 2004 onwards as these were manufactured in china. I asked if he knew of anyone that had done this conversion before and see if he could help me out by getting to test drive one, but apparently the only one is in kalgoorlie. But im gonna keep saving and then decide when i have the coin there. Thanks for the info!

So i have gone around to this guys workshop and had a look at these engines. My god are they big. We had a good chat about as he is only starting up, he will have all the adapter ect after Christmas. He said it will be alot cheaper to go the 12 valve engine because with the 24 valve id have to get/mod the wiring harness and ecu ect so i have put a deposit down for a 12v. Apparently i will need a different exhaust manifold and run the exhaust up over the engine and down the other side. We cant use the mechanical fan either as its too far forward, so id have to get an electric one? Im going to have to start a build thread soon:thumbup:

I dare say it will still be a few months away. But i have the ball rolling by putting a deposit down on the engine. I rekon its going to work out the same price, if not cheaper than the td42t conversion, i cant wait!!! And yes, ill be takong plenty of photos along the way if all goes to plan:sterb032::049:
