View Full Version : Suspension expert required Adelaide

Hi all,
I have a '91 GQ 4.2 diesel which suffers the dreaded shakes. So far replaced split rims and tubed tyres with new wheels, tubeless BFG AT, new steering damper, new shocks, new swivel bearings. I think that's it so far, and no difference.
So, can anyone suggest an expert garage in southern Adelaide that really knows how to correct this? I could keep spending money on balancing drive shafts, axles, replace this, do that, but so far thousands spent and nothing to show for it. Sure all good maintenance so not unhappy in one sense, but by golly, want to make it smooooth. This is 2nd GQ owned, and first one never had any shakes, so that tells me it must be possible to cure.

Very common. Usually called the death wobbles.
Only a couple of bits left mate.
Change out drag link and tie rod rod ends and panhard bushes and it'll be like new.

You may have to do rear bushes aswell, but not as common to cause shakes.

No need to balance shafts etc. If you've been told this slap them.

Uni joints can cause vibrations but I haven't heard of them affective steering.

Possibly radius arm bushes too....

Is it a steering shake or does the whole body shake and at what speed.
It may have nothing to do with the wheels or suspension.

90% it will be front end bushes mate! take it to a good suspension or 4wd shop and they should solve it for you by changing the bushes.

Thanks, looks like bushes next then.
No, not a body shake; just mainly through steering wheel, but I can feel it through the seat too, although passengers don't seem to notice.
So, anyone recommend someone southern Adelaide?

Get genuine Nissan bushes not aftermarket or nolethene

Do you find it clunks when you go threw spoon drains?
I'd do bushes first. Genuine is the way to go. Although a bigger outlay they'll outlast any cheaper bush.
Nolathane claim to be the best but heaps of people report the opposite and say shakes increase, I think that's due there stiffness.

I'll ask my bro of a workshop south Adelaide but tpc is from that way I think

You could try here but he is expensive I know TPC and some other friends use him and seem to be very happy.

Thanks for the info.
In answer to question: no clunks or any change going through spoon drains. No change in service makes any change, just seems to be speed related. Car does have a slight tendency to "tram track" a bit though.
anyway, bushes probably due....

So start with panhard rods. I'd do front and rear.
If you know a mate with a press they are doable yourself. You may need a big ass socket arm to undo the nuts though.

See how that goes.
If you still notice wobbles then do rod ends on toe rod and steering rod.
Tie rod ends are screw in and out. Easy.
My drag / steering rod had fixed ends.
So upgrade time to adjustable.

I'm now running no dampener and am shake free for close to 12months now.

By the way, I found a youtube flick (from Aus) suggesting that the wobbles are cured by removing the shims top and bottom from the swivel bearings. Anyone know about this?

If you've had the bearings done then no. They shouldn't be the issue if done properly.
If not then yes they can be removed to check.
They set bearing preload so once you need to remove them the bearings should be replaced.

You mentioned swivel hub bearings done, did they check wheel bearings?
These are quite simple to nip up. Sortable like trailer wheel bearings.
