LOL, sooo how secure is your password??

Just seen a story on Sunrise regarding security, so I googled and found this:)

https://howsecureismypassword.net/

Interestingly enough, when I added a smiley face characters : ) to the end of my password it went from 15 hours to hack to 526 years...LOL

96 Years.............

I don't use this Password but it is

Grady<1942

Now that is not a very secure Password as Grady is my surname and 1942 is the Year I was born.
A Hacker should not have that much trouble cracking that if he had some knowledge about me

Regular non-financial 4000 years
Financial 344,000 years

I initially thought it could be a collector, then it would have to download a login/keystroke virus, then id your accounts, etc....

I highly recommend people look at a password manager like last pass. I use it for all sites and it integrates with the browser on all platforms, although iOS is not as capable as other options.

This solution generates very strong passwords for all sites. All you need to do is remember the master password. In the case of last pass I also use a USB/NFC key as an extra level of security that works nicely with android devices.

I changed to using this solution after having passwords stolen from commercial sites (ie Adobe) and then having to change that password at dozens of sites.

An example password is:

7Pq%oXN8%#$URRTZ6z2oE*BffZ0K

Cracking this password simply isn't feasible.

There are a few options out there that work well.

If you use Google for mail, enable their two factor authentication.

I highly recommend using one of these solutions as password theft is becoming a bigger problem.

I haven't tried it so I may be way wrong on how it works but is it;

Step 1 - Go to a web page which now knows your IP address
Step 2 - Enter your passwords, existing or potential, for assessment

Uummmmm, think I'll pass on that

I'm not even going to try my password but just think this is supposedly based on a desktop PC and your average cyber crim ain't using no normal desktop PC

But doesn't it also save all your passwords for all sites? Is the passwords encrypted when saved? Whats stopping someone accessing your password manager then having full access to all your sites passwords?

The password data is encrypted. Providing your master password is appropriately complex it is a more secure solution than that used by most people.

The fact is I don't know the password I use for almost every site as i don't need to.

Another benefit is I occasionally print the password data so my wife can access it should I not be around. This is important as it can be extremely difficult to remove a relative from public sites (Facebook etc) after their death.
