Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me if I can get a new loop put on the end of my winch cable? and if so, does anyone now who can do it for me here in Sydney please?

Cheers,

Rob

before going to the expense of refitting the end of your cabil i would run it out and find out how much you have left a in what condition it is in. any otherkinks or frays will weaken your cable considrably and i would strongly recomend replacing the whole lot with either a new cable or plasma rope. if you still have sufficent lenght in the cable and it is in really good order no kinks or frays then most any rigging supplies like bolivents in smithfield (i think they are not sure on spelling either) or anyone who deals in lifting gear or rigging. you can also do this yourself using u bolts (speically made for holding cable) and a eyelet which the cable is folded around. this system does use up more cable and you would need a d shackle instead of a hook on the end of your cable also there is a set formular to the number of u bolts and the leight of cable behind the eyelet, and set space between each u bolt so that it will take a full load safely. hope this has been some help to you.

Thanks for the heads up Hekarewe. Unfortunately the financial controller wont release enough funds at this time for me to purchase a plasma rope although it is on the cards. So I need to repair the cable for the time being.

I have inspected the cable and it seems to be in good nick with no kinks or frayed bits at all so it should do the job for a little while longer.

Cheers,

You just need to find a mob with a swaging tool.

Bullivants, Slinglift etc pretty much anyone in the yellow pages who sells Slings, Cables, Lifting equipment etc. If you are near the coast almost any of the suppliers who do Trawlers, Fishing Boats etc

Don't use U Bolts, Cable clamps etc... Yes the work and Yes they are safe if done correctly but one "ooops" with the winch controller and if the clamp james in the fairlead or hawse and you are stuffed

Just an update:

Spoke to " JL Robertson" and " Bullivants " this week and Bullivants will charge $90.00 to swage a new loop in the end of the cable (If the cable is useable) a replacment cable with drum connection and loop will cost $345.00 from Bullivants (9mm x 30m) JL Robertson will charge $60.00 to swage a new loop andf the replacement cable is around the same money from them.

So I found an alternative to get me through the next 12 months and then I can re assess if I need a plasma rope or not.

Bought a new 26m cable at 9.5mm from eBay at $104.00 (Inc postage)
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250782618456&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Now I just need to find the user manual for the Warn Hi mount winch on the front of the Patrol so I can give it a service. (Its the same one as Evil's that he has on the Smurf I think)

cheers,

Rob

Dang, thought the swaging would be about half that but I spose they would need to inspect the cable as part of the process and ass covering etc etc. so could almost be assured they will decide you need a new cable.

$100 for a new cable is pretty good I must say and I agree is def the way to go.

Your right ET. I would have had to remove the cable from the drum, drop it to them, wait about a week to get their report and then have to pick it up again and re-fit the cable.

This way it is just as easy. Although I'm not one to just throw somthing away because its to hard to repair. I just think in this case with the age of the vehicle and the poor service history of it that the best option is to just replace the item. Especially a saftey item like this one. Dont want it to fail at the worst possible moment stuck in the middle of a river with the rain falling down......

You may find that cable a bit short. Warn 8274 hi-mount winches are specced with 46 meters of 8mm cable.

Thanks Tony. Until I get a little more experienced this one will get me out of any trouble I might find myself in. Then there is the financial controller to contend with as well.......

Thanks for the heads up.
